After two weeks of the season we are starting to see some of the better teams rise to the top in certain classifications. While there were some upsets in Week 2, overall the changes to the Kpreps Rankings were pretty modest. Coming up in Week 3, however, there are several marquee matchups featuring ranked teams. Shawnee Mission East remains atop the Class 6A poll after a 49-0 shutout of Shawnee Mission South. The Lancers have posted shutouts in each of their first two games. Blue Valley remains at No. 2 this week after a 34-24 win over rival Blue Valley West. The Tigers got a solid performance from backup quarterback Matthew Dercher after Colton McCumber went down on the game’s first snap. The Tigers have a big Eastern Kansas League showdown with 4A-I No. 1 Bishop Miege this week. Speaking of Week 3 showdowns, Class 6A’s No. 3 Derby Panthers will take on the No. 1 team in Class 5A, Mill Valley this week. The Panthers routed Salina Central 54-20 in Salina last week. Lawrence remains at No. 4 this week after a 41-14 win over Leavenworth in which the Lions rushed for more than 400 yards. J.D. Woods rushed for five touchdowns for Lawrence in the game. Topeka High remains in the No. 5 spot after an 82-0 shutout of Topeka West. The Trojans’ remain just ahead of strong contenders Hutchinson, Shawnee Mission West, and Wichita Northwest.
As mentioned above, Mill Valley remains atop the Class 5A poll after a 40-6 win over Blue Valley Northwest. The Jaguars will get tested this week with 6A No. 3 Derby. Second-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas rebounded from the loss to Mill Valley with a big win over Blue Valley North, while No. 3 Bishop Carroll picked up its first win 54-7 over Wichita East. Pittsburg moves up one spot in this week’s poll to No. 4 after a 46-0 shutout of Independence. The Purple Dragons will get tested at Fort Scott in Week 3. Kapaun Mount Carmel drops one spot to No. 5 after a 49-33 loss to Wichita Northwest. The Crusaders travel to No. 3 Bishop Carroll this week in the Holy War.
Bishop Miege remains No.1 in Class 4A-I after drilling Gardner-Edgerton, 59-20. The Stags get a big test this week when travel to 6A No. 2 Blue Valley. Buhler remains at No. 2 this week after a narrow 20-14 win over Mulvane. Crusader standout quarterback Jace Williams went out with an injury in the third quarter, but Dillon Engelland scored late in the third quarter to provide the winning points. Andover Central enters this week’s poll at No. 3 after losses by Topeka Hayden and Paola last week. The Jaguars beat cross-town rival Andover 37-13 to improve to 2-o on the season. Hayden drops one spot to No. 4 after a 26-14 loss to Class 6A Washburn Rural. The Wildcats will get another test this week when they host Manhattan. Ulysses also is down a spot to No. 5 this week after having to hold off Hugoton, 27-21. The Tigers host 4A-II No. 1 Holcomb in Week 3.
In Class 4A-II, Holcomb is the No. 1 ranked team for the second straight week after a 51-6 win over Goodland. As mentioned above, the Longhorns travel to meet the Ulysses Tigers in Week 3. Andale rebounded from their Week 1 loss to Buhler by shutting down McPherson 29-8. The Indians will get tested again this week as they travel to 3A No. 3 Wichita Collegiate. The third-ranked Columbus Titans cruised to a 50-8 win at Southeast-Cherokee on Friday, and will be on the road again this week at Galena. The Holton Wildcats remain in the No. 4 spot despite beginning the season 0-2. Holton fell 20-13 at 5A’s Maize South in Week 2 after opening the season with a 23-22 overtime loss against Silver Lake. Finally, Osawatomie remains in the No. 5 spot after a 54-22 road win at Labette County.
There are no changes to the Class 3A poll this week, but a couple of the ranked teams passed some significant tests. Rossville, Scott City, and Wichita Collegiate all cruised to big victories, while No. 4 Halstead and No. 5 Silver Lake were challenged. Halstead grinded out an 18-6 win over Central Kansas League rival Hesston, while Silver Lake won by one-point in overtime for the second consecutive week. The Eagles survived Perry-Lecompton with a 39-38 overtime win.
Meade remains on top in Class 2-1A after running past Lakin, while Sedgwick is up a spot to No. 2 after outscoring Whitewater-Remington. Phillipsburg lost a hard-fought, turnover-plagued game with rival Norton 7-6. As a result, the Panthers fall one sport in this week’s poll to No. 3 just ahead of another Mid-Continent League rival Smith Center. The Redmen enter the poll at the No. 4 spot after posting a 35-0 shutout at Oakley. Finally, Marion remains at No.5 this week after beating Hutchinson Trinity, 28-8.
Eight-Man, Division I’s top-ranked Spearville led a solid South Central team 22-6 at halftime before pulled away in the second half for a 52-6 win. Defending champion Central Plains got in the win column with a 66-0 shutout of Kinsley. Solomon moves up two spots to No. 3 this week after dominating last week’s No.3 Wakefield, 42-6. Wakefield drops out of this week’s poll, but the Bombers have a chance at redemption with a district showdown with No. 4 Hanover this week. The Burlingame Bearcats land in the No. 5 spot in this week’s poll after dominating 62-14 win over Marais des Cygnes Valley. Robert Hutchins rushed for five touchdowns and returned an interception for a sixth score for the Bearcats.
In Class 8-Man II, Victoria played its first game without Brady Dinkel and won 38-12 at Ellinwood. Joe Dortland filled in a quarterback and passed for three touchdowns while rushing for another scores. Second-ranked Sharon Springs-Wallace County picked up an impressive 52-6 win over Oberlin-Decatur Community. Eric Gfeller accounted for five total touchdowns to lead the Wildcats. There was slight movement in this week’s poll as Argonia-Attica gains just enough votes to switch places with Ingalls. The Titans move up to No. 3 after beating Cedar Vale-Dexter 60-14, while Ingalls raced past Bucklin, 84-20. Beloit St. John’s-Tipton remains No.5 this week after a solid 40-14 win over Osborne.
