The regular season is complete. District champions have been crowned. It’s time for the playoffs.
As in previous years, we’ll continue with our Kpreps Rankings each Monday throughout the playoffs. Here’s a look at the Kpreps Rankings for November 3rd. As always, check out the Rankings tab for complete recaps of each ranked team.
There is some movement in the Class 6A poll this week as Lawrence Free State enters the top five at No. 5 after a 53-37 win over Topeka High. As a result, Derby moves up a spot to No. 4 this week and Topeka drops out of this week’s poll. The defending-champion Derby Panthers have won eight straight games and have the top seed on the west side of the 6A bracket. The top three teams in the classification reside on the east side of the bracket. Top-ranked Shawnee Mission East completed the first unbeaten regular season in school history by defeating Shawnee Mission North last week. Olathe North shutout Olathe Northwest 20-0, and No. 3 Blue Valley struggled to get by a tough Blue Valley Northwest team, 20-12.
The Class 5A poll saw significant changes this week as Pittsburg went on the road and defeated last week’s No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas, 31-21. The No. 3 Purple Dragons clinched a playoff berth with the win; their first since 2007. Aquinas drops two spots to No. 4 this week; just ahead of No. 5 Salina Central. Wichita Heights drops from No. 4 out of the poll this week after a 17-14 loss to Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Salina South survived a road test at Great Bend and moves up to No. 2 this week, while top-ranked Bishop Carroll rolled to their fourth shutout of the season.
There is no change in the Class 4A-I poll this week as top-ranked Bishop Miege, No. 2 Topeka Hayden, and No. 3 KC Piper all cruised to big victories. McPherson and Buhler survived the brutal District 8 and advanced to the playoffs. The No. 4 Bullpups outscored Hays 42-35, while No. 5 Buhler won at Abilene, 28-14.
The 4A-II poll also remained unchanged this week. All five ranked teams won by at least 44 points this week. Top-ranked Andale and No. 3 Frontenac remain the only two unbeaten teams in the classification.
After remaining still for most of the season, the Class 3A Top 5 underwent major changes this week. Rossville takes over as the new No. 1 team after defeating their arch rival Silver Lake 24-14. The Bulldogs knocked off the Eagles in the regular season for the second consecutive year. Silver Lake falls to No. 3 this week, one spot behind the Scott City Beavers who moved up from the third spot. Elsewhere, last week’s No. 4 Conway Springs fell to Chaparral 27-19 and fell out of this week’s poll. As a result, Wichita Collegiate moves up one spot this week to No. 4, while unbeaten Hesston enters the poll at No. 5 after winning 35-13 on the road at Southeast of Saline.
The Class 2-1A poll finally had a week without change as only No. 2 La Crosse was seriously challenged this week. The Leopards trailed at Oakley for much of the game, but forced overtime and escaped with a 27-21 win.
The Eight-Man, Division I showdown between No. 1 Hanover and No. 4 Osborne lived up to its billing for a half. Hanover and Osborne traded leads before the Wildcats went into halftime up 28-26. Hanover then shutout Osborne in the second half on their way to a 54-26 win. Despite the loss, Osborne remains at No. 4 this week, one spot ahead of No. 5 Udall. Spearville is ranked second, and Central Plains remains ranked third in this week’s poll.
In Eight-Man, Division II, Argonia-Attica moves up one spot to No. 4 this week after an impressive 54-8 win over South Barber. The Titans switch places with the injury-riddled St. John’s-Tipton Blujays who needed a Hail Mary pass from Trey Dubbert to his brother Davis Dubbert to escape Northern Valley 46-38 and qualify for the playoffs.
