Week Four of the Kansas high school football season featured a lot of high scoring games, but not a lot of close games. The impact of Friday night’s action on our top five was significant in a couple of classifications. Which ones? Find out below or visit our Rankings page to view a complete list of the top five teams in each classification and how they performed last week.
A week after some exciting games among 6A ranked teams, each of the top five teams cruised to wins on Friday night. Second-ranked Olathe North had won its first three games each by single digits, but finally put things together in a 49-0 shutout of Shawnee Mission South. The Eagles remain one spot behind Shawnee Mission East, which handled Shawnee Mission West 42-19. Topeka High scored touchdowns at will in a 63-21 win over Emporia. Quarterback Alec Beatty passed for three scores and ran for three more for the Trojans. Remaining at Nos. 4 and 5, Blue Valley and Olathe South each rolled to league wins.
Friday’s showdown between No. 1 Bishop Carroll and No. 2 Wichita Heights turned out to be a mismatch as Carroll routed the Falcons 70-15. As a result of that performance, our voters took Heights out of the top five this week. Salina South and Pittsburg move up to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively after dominate wins over Goddard and Chanute. Blue Valley West is back in the top five at No. 4 after building a 35-point lead on Gardner-Edgerton before winning 42-21. Finally, St. Thomas Aquinas falls one spot to No. 5 this week after battling Bishop Miege before falling 37-20.
The aforementioned Bishop Miege Stags remain atop the Class 4A-I poll after beating Aquinas 37-20. The Stags led by 10 at halftime before opening up a 37-13 lead in the second half. Hays remains at No. 2 this week thanks to quarterback Alex Delton’s 312 rushing yards and four touchdowns against Garden City. The Indians remain just ahead of Topeka Hayden which beat Shawnee Heights 33-12. After two straight shutouts, the KC Piper Pirate defense actually allowed points this week. However, the No. 4 Pirates rolled past Bishop Ward 61-8. Meanwhile, defending champion Buhler rolled to a 55-27 win over Augusta and remains ranked fifth.
There is some change at the bottom of our 4A, Division II poll this week as Holcomb and Wamego both suffered their first losses on Friday. Holcomb committed six turnovers in getting routed at Scott City 49-6. The Longhorns, though, fell only one spot in our poll to No. 5 this week. Wamego fell out of the top five after losing to Abilene, 25-14. Frontenac replaces the Red Raiders in the poll at No. 4 this week. The Raiders got a goal line stop in the third quarter to secure a 30-26 win over Galena. The top three in the class remains the same after posting easy wins.
There is no change in our Class 3A poll this week as only No. 3 Scott City was expected to get tested by Holcomb. As mentioned above, the Beavers took advantage of several Longhorn turnovers in winning 49-6. Wichita Collegiate remains ranked fifth this week after holding off Mulvane, 34-14.
The Class 2-1A poll has completely reshuffled this week thanks to previously top-ranked La Crosse’s 40-6 loss at unbeaten Southeast of Saline. As a result, Phillipsburg is the new No. 1 team in the classification just ahead of the Leopards who fell a spot to No. 2. La Crosse is ranked in front of No. 3 Olpe who the Leopards beat 28-8 to open the season. Meade survived a 12-6 slugfest over Cimarron and checks in at No. 4 this week, while Sedgwick returns to the rankings at No. 5 this week after beating Bennington 45-6.
In Eight-Man, Division I, all five teams rolled to big victories as No. 2 Osborne’s 56-8 win over Lincoln was the closest margin among the ranked teams. Potential tests could come this week for No. 4 Spearville and No. 5 Madison. The Lancers visit Ness City, while Madison hosts Rural Vista.
In Eight-Man, Division II, top-ranked Chetopa passed what is believed to be its only regular-season test with a 56-8 win at Uniontown. The Green Hornet defense answered the bell by allowing a powerful Uniontown rushing attack around 100 yards of total offense on 53 plays. Elsewhere, No. 2 Beloit St. John’s-Tipton and No. 3 Thunder Ridge each rolled to wins, while No. 4 Victoria and No. 5 Sharon Springs-Wallace County passed stiff tests. Victoria edged Ness City 26-22, while Wallace County scored the only points in the second half to beat Hoxie, 24-16.
