Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Olathe West slipped by Olathe East, 15-7, in the rain on Thursday night. The Owls scored on a Cash Warren rushing touchdown and on a fumble return for a score by Reed Peterson. Warren led Olathe West with 18 carries for 106 yards and that score. The Owls improve to 3-2 on the season and will host Shawnee Mission Northwest (3-2) next week.
Lawrence blitzed Shawnee Mission South with two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters to win 44-7. Playing in the rain on Thursday night, the Lions kept the ball on the ground in rushing for 404 yards and six touchdowns. Kayden Pitts led the ground game with 180 yards and a score on 16 attempts. Ethan Curry and Acein Goodman each rushed for two touchdowns. Curry rushed for 74 yards, while Goodman added 61 yards. Quarterback Joey Dooley also carried nine times for 87 yards and a score.
Wichita Southeast picked up a third consecutive win by blanking Wichita North, 70-0. The Golden Buffaloes rushed for 466 yards in the game. Senior Kedrick Harrison rushed for 256 yards on 14 carries while sophomore Martayvion Bodney added 102 yards on three carries. Southeast will travel to Wichita South this week.
Olathe Northwest outscored Olathe North 31-7 in the second half to pull away for a 41-14 win. Quarterback Brody Comfort rushed nine times for 143 yards and two touchdowns and added 110 passing yards on the night. Noah Harrell added 93 yards and a score and Jackson Connell added 72 yards and a touchdown. The Raven defense held Olathe North to 55 rush yards on 22 attempts.
Wichita Northwest took control with 17 points in the first quarter and went on to shut out Wichita Heights, 38-0. The Grizzlies overcame three turnovers in beating the Falcons. Freshman Braylon Scott rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Zy’Air Burton added 57 yards and two rushing scores.
Class 5A:
Blue Valley North outscored Blue Valley Northwest 35-0 combined in the second and third quarters in turning an early 20-6 deficit into a 41-20 lead. The Mustangs would go on to defeat the 6A No. 5 ranked Huskies, 55-34. Junior quarterback Ethan O’Hara passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs. Colton Nichols caught nine passes for 180 yards and two scores. Jax Lemmon added four catches for 80 yards and a score. Rett Daniels rushed for 40 yards and scored five touchdowns for Blue Valley North.
Basehor-Linwood snapped a two-game losing streak with a 24-8 victory over KC Piper. Sophomore quarterback Bowie Richmond passed for 190 yards with touchdowns to three different receivers. Anderson Essary had 77 receiving yards and a score with Brody Duckworth adding 76 yards and a score. Parker Unruh also added a scoring catch.
De Soto rushed for 331 yards in defeating Lansing, 45-7. Emerson Tjaden carried 16 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while Will Morton added 104 yards and two scores on seven carries. Brady DeArmond rushed only three times for 97 yards and a score. Ben Parks passed for 82 yards and a touchdown pass that went to DeArmond. De Soto will be heavily favored in consecutive road games at KC Turner and Shawnee Heights the next two weeks.
Topeka Seaman rolled to a 62-0 shutout of KC Turner on Friday behind a huge night from senior quarterback Cale Ketter. Ketter completed 14 of 16 passes for 224 yards and six touchdowns. Coy Barta caught four passes for 62 yards and two scores, while Josh Brown, Peyton Glaze, Coren Stallbaumer, and Jack Becker each caught scoring passes. Ketter pushed his season total to 1,546 yards and 18 touchdowns. Quentin Moravec added 103 yards rushing and a score on nine carries.
Salina South built a 28-0 lead in defeating Ark City, 42-15. Izrael Telles completed 17 of 23 passes for 358 yards and four touchdowns. Jay Curtis caught six passes for 128 yards to lead the Cougar receivers. Armane Redmond added 147 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
Class 4A:
Ulysses improved to 4-1 after a 42-36 road win at Goodland. Senior quarterback Caden Ledesma passed for 292 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers. Ledesma connected with Stryker Berglund seven times for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw touchdown passes to Jaxon Curl and Malikah Garcia. Berglund added 129 rushing yards and a touchdown and Ledesma also rushed for a touchdown.
Wellington went on the road and picked up an impressive 34-9 win over Mulvane. After falling behind early, the Crusaders scored 20 points in the second quarter to lead 20-9 at halftime. Junior quarterback Colton Elmore passed for 253 yards and threw touchdown passes to Cole Zeka and Jackson Curry in the win. Nelson Armstrong led the ground game with 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Independence improved to 3-2 on the season with a 16-8 win over Chanute in overtime. Javen Colbert hit Reece Reichenberger on a touchdown pass in overtime to put the Bulldogs on top. The Bulldog defense then stopped the Blue Comets on their possession to seal the win. Kaeson Lewis led Independence with 128 rushing yards on 15 attempts.
Rock Creek edged Tonganoxie 17-12 to improve to 3-2 on the season. Tonganoxie grabbed an early 6-0 lead on a Blake Riedel touchdown run. That lead held until the third quarter when Rock Creek struck on a long touchdown pass from Tate Smith for a 7-6 lead. The Mustangs then blocked a Tongie punt resulting in a touchdown and a 14-6 lead. Tonganoxie would respond with a Hudson Myers touchdown pass to Kipton Harder to pull within 14-12. Rock Creek later added a field goal and forced a Tonganoxie fumble on the Chieftains final drive.
Class 3A:
Wichita Trinity Academy scored late to top Clearwater, 20-15. Camdon Killgore passed for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Harrison Keller caught seven passes for 134 yards and a score and Caleb Back added a touchdown catch. Kipton Roberts led the ground game with 83 yards and a score.
Jefferson West improved to 4-1 with a 48-14 win over Holton. Tiger quarterback Brixton Schwinn completed 30 of 39 passes for 379 yards and seven touchdowns in the win. Parker Jenson caught three Schwinn touchdown passes and Brady Skahan added two scoring catches. Schwinn also threw touchdown passes to Parker Petesch and Jakob Devlin. Jerome Williams led Holton with 118 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Hugoton went on the road and defeated Scott City, 26-19. Isai Guardado lead the Eagles with 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. The Eagles have now beaten Scott City in back-to-back seasons after having lost 12 consecutive games in the series before last year. It was Hugoton’s first victory at Scott City since 2004.
Lyons held off Larned, 14-8, to improve to 4-1 on the season. Junior Xander Young rushed 20 times for 149 yards and a touchdown to lead the Lions. Quanick Hamilton added a rushing score for Lyons. Lyons now has its most wins in a single season since a 5-4 campaign in 2013.
Frontenac went on the road and controlled the game against Girard to win 46-27 in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Raiders got on the board early on a fourth-down run from quarterback Brogan Smith. Frontenac blocked a Girard punt on the next possession which set up the first of three rushing touchdowns from Rylan Relph. Ben Cullen’s touchdown run brought Girard within 12-8, but Smith then hit Kaden Merando on a touchdown pass for an 18-8 halftime lead. Relph extended the lead to 25-8 in the third quarter and later broke free from midfield to put the Raiders up 32-14. Girard played without its defensive leader in linebacker Blake Brokob. The Trojnas were led by Boston Mlekus’ 229 rushing yards with two scores.
Columbus won for a fourth consecutive week. The Titans grinded out a 33-21 win over Iola. Braun Stone rushed 22 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Titan offense. Cole Howard added 164 passing yards with a touchdown pass going to Denver Hughes. Jayden Dohle also added a rushing score.
Class 2A:
Caney Valley won the battle of Tri-Valley League undefeated teams by pulling away from Neodesha, 38-14. The Bullpups struck first on a Traxcyn Garton touchdown run for a 6-0 lead. Layne Denny then hit Boone White on a touchdown pass from midfield for a 14-0 lead at halftime. Garton then took a toss from Denny and threw to Drake Roberds for a halfback pass touchdown. Jace Buckley and Garton later added rushing scores as Caney built a 38-6 lead. Neodesha scored in the final minute for the final margin.
Chaparral remains unbeaten after a 51-29 win over Cimarron. The Roadrunners built a 41-7 lead at halftime in cruising past the Bluejays. Daniel Schmidt completed 24 of 28 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns. He connected ten times for 117 yards and two touchdowns with fellow senior Carter Hostetler. Jayden Harper added 90 receiving yards and a score. Schmidt also rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
Baxter Springs outscored Cherryvale 22-0 in the second half to pick up a key district win, 35-6. The Lions improved to 2-3 on the season and evened their district record at 1-1. The Lions forced three turnovers and held Cherryvale to 66 rush yards on 31 carries.
Humboldt outscored Central Heights 20-6 in the fourth quarter to win 42-27. Junior quarterback Ty Schaughnessy completed six of ten passing for 194 yards and four touchdowns for the Cubs. Shaughnessy added 114 yards and two scores on the ground on 24 carries. Gavin Gunderman caught three passes for 142 yards with all three going for touchdowns.
Osage City rolled to a 64-0 win over Maranatha Academy after a 49-point first half. Sawyer Speece carried five times for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Indian offense. Reed Silver added 80 yards and a touchdown on the ground and passed for 69 yards and a score that went to Speece. Titan Price and Will Brown each added rushing scores for Osage City.
Class 1A:
Medicine Lodge defeated Conway Springs for a second consecutive season. The Indians scored 20 points in the first half to win 32-7. Mavrik Inslee passed for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the win. All three of Inslee’s touchdown passes went to Judson Barnard who caught five for 139 yards. Mason Ricke added 100 yards on the ground with a score.
Jackson Heights defeated Wabaunsee 18-14 in a game where all scoring occurred in the second half. The Cobras were led by Kolby Bowhay who passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns – one each to Luke Schierling and Sir Peek. Brody Browning rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on ten carries.
St. Mary’s Colgan picked up the first win of the Stu Jeck era by defeating Northeast-Arma, 55-6, on Homecoming. Quarterback Gabe Brown threw touchdown passes to Peyton Armstrong, Will Schremmer, and Brycen Farris. Armstrong scored multiple touchdowns for the Panthers. Farris also followed up his touchdown catch with a pick-six on the ensuing possession.
Leon-Bluestem picked up its first win of the season by defeating Syracuse, 20-6. This was a non-district game between the two schools separated by about 300 miles. Axton Vice led Bluestem with 150 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Vice has been a workhorse for the Lions this season having carried 101 times for 698 yards and four touchdowns. Vice has now rushed for 2,275 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career.
Class 8-man I
WaKeeney-Trego rolled over Bennington, 52-0, and improved to 3-2. The Golden Eagles scored 28 points in the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Senior Jack Conness rushed eight times for 85 yards and three scores. Sophomore quarterback Vladon Crawford finished five of eight passing for 88 yards with two scores against no interceptions. Crawford also picked off an interception on defense. Sophomore Jared Aschenbrenner blocked a punt. Sophomore Cash Perkowski had an interception, recovered a fumble and caught one pass, a 44-yard score.
Kiowa County pulled off a 34-28 upset over previously undefeated and No. 4-ranked Central Plains. Jacob Hogan finished with 51 carries for 282 yards and five touchdowns and tallied the game-winning score in OT, per KRSL Radio. Kiowa County led 28-20 with 1:51 left in the game when Keeton Robison scored on a 13-yard run and Central Plains tied the game. In overtime, Central Plains fumbled, and Hogan scored the winning points. Kiowa County finished with 296 yards, and Central Plains posted 244.
Ell-Saline earned a key 22-12 win versus Hoxie. Neither team scored in the first half. Hoxie led 6-0 in the third quarter when junior Noah Nickelson scored from 20 yards out. Ell-Saline first scored with 7:44 left on a Julian Roche rushing score, per KSAL Radio. The Cardinals had an 8-6 advantage. Hoxie lost a fumble on the next play, and Roche tallied his second rushing score. Hoxie scored after a long drive on a run by Chase Meyer. After Ell-Saline went three-and-out, the Cardinals’ defense held Hoxie and forced a turnover on downs. Roche tallied his third rushing score, this time from four yards out, with 1:14 remaining in the contest.
Oxford defeated Udall, 50-0, and set up a key matchup with No. 1-ranked Lincoln. Tyson Morris posted seven rushes for 150 yards and three scores. Logan Gaither posted 34 rushing yards, 75 receiving yards and a score.
Cair Paravel quickly pulled ahead of Pleasanton with a 26-point first quarter en route to a 54-6 district win. Cole Haubold led the Lions with 122 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the night. Matteo Gossard added a pair of rushing scores and Mason Schuster also scored. Quarterback Chase Hastert passed for 138 yards with a touchdown going to freshman Jonas Everhart. Pleasanton scored on a touchdown pass from Brayden Hutchison to Antonio Bustilllos.
South Sumner County blanked Central Burden, 46-0, to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Outlaws were led by Mak Blosser who passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and added a pair of rushing scores. Maddox Pond rushed for a score and caught a touchdown pass from Blosser. Caleb Boone also caught a scoring pass to go along with a team-high 58 receiving yards.
Class 8-man II
Argonia-Attica defeated Sunrise Christian Academy, 56-6, in a game that ended at halftime. A&A led 40-0 after the first quarter. Senior Maddex Hemberger completed five of five passes for 99 yards with a score. Freshman Dax Ricke had nine rushes for 117 yards and two TDs. He also caught a 26-yard pass for a score. A&A improved to 3-2.
Victoria and Ellis met up in one of the best finishes of Week 5. Victoria won 44-36 and moved to 2-3. The two squads are at opposite ends of Ellis County and had not played football against each other since 1999, per Kansas Football History. Then, Victoria switched to eight-man and has never had a losing season and won four state titles. Ellis in its third year of eight-man football. First-year Ellis coach Dan Rogers served in many roles for a decade-plus at Victoria, including assistant football coach. Victoria trailed 36-20 at the start of the fourth quarter before it scored 24 unanswered points. Junior Levi Schumacher caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds.
Osborne won a wild game, 54-42, over Thunder Ridge in a matchup of two longtime Northern Plains League rivals. Thunder Ridge led 8-0 after the first quarter and 22-8 at halftime. After Osborne outscored the Longhorns, 38-8, in the third quarter. Osborne sophomore Tate Tiernan completed 10 of 15 passing for 157 yards with two scores against no interceptions. He rushed 27 times for 202 yards and four scores. Sophomore Donavon Holloway posted 14 carries for 129 yards and a score. Thunder Ridge standout junior quarterback Tate Foreman enjoyed a huge game. Foreman completed 11 of 17 passes for 202 yards with a score against an interception. Foreman rushed 20 times for 114 yards and four scores.
Quinter defeated St. Francis, 46-0. The Bulldogs held St. Francis to 25 plays for 47 yards, all on the ground.
6-Man
Otis-Bison dominated Western Plains, 60-0. Otis-Bison scored 33 points in the first quarter in a game that ended at halftime. Junior Aiden Ochs-Lohrey continued his big season with 12 carries for 199 yards and six scores, along with 12 tackles.
Peabody-Burns defeated Altoona-Midway, 58-6. Peabody-Burns used two quarterbacks. Senior Ashton Talkington had six of eight passing for 120 yards and a touchdown. Senior Dalton Philpott finished three of four passing for 81 yards and three scores. Talkington rushed five times for 61 yards and two scores. Philpott had four carries for 60 yards and two TDs. Senior Jameson Miles caught three passes for 121 yards and two scores. Senior Colin Groff had four rushes for 29 yards and two TDs.
Logan improved to 4-1 with a 52-6 win over Pawnee Heights. Taden Gottschalk rushed seven times for 132 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Taden Gottschalk improved his season totals to 907 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns. Easton Gottschalk added 86 yards passing with touchdown passes to freshman Henry States and Jasper States.
