Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Blue Valley Northwest scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in rolling past Blue Valley Southwest, 42-24. The Huskies led 28-3 at halftime and 42-10 after three quarters. Quarterback Braxton Wagner passed for 228 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Baron Marshall landed four catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Aidan Ihm rushed for 108 yards and two scores. Cade Nelson also added 72 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Lawrence built a 21-point lead out of halftime but needed a late two-point conversion stop to hold off Shawnee Mission East, 35-34. Joey Dooley’s rushing touchdown to start the third quarter put the Lions up 28-7. But the Lancers rallied to tie the game at 28. Lawrence grabbed a 35-28 lead with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Dooley to Acein Goodman. But SM East responded and scored with less than a minute to go, but Lawrence stuffed the Lancer two-point attempt. Dooley passed for 188 yards and two touchdowns and added 148 yards and two scores on the ground. Ethan Curry added 91 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Lions.
Wichita Heights got in the win column with a 46-0 shutout of Wichita West. Sophomore quarterback Johan Thang passed for 183 yards and three touchdowns for the Falcons. Chaylen Bodney rushed for three scores, while Christopher Bodney had 140 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Shawnee Mission Northwest scored multiple touchdowns in each quarter to race past Shawnee Mission North, 63-28. The Cougars led 35-21 at halftime and outscored the Bison 28-7 in the second half. Northwest picked up its first win of the season after opening with losses to Mill Valley and Raymore-Peculiar. The loss dropped SM North to 2-1 on the season.
Olathe North built a 36-0 halftime lead in routing Shawnee Mission South, 49-7. Sophomore quarterback Chase Cain passed for 395 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Akobi Bruce had 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Anthony Harris added 115 receiving yards and a score. Jayson Rush and Camron Porter each added touchdown catches.
Class 5A:
KC Washington built a 46-6 lead at halftime and rolled past KC Wyandotte, 78-6. Quarterback Benito Morrell completed 13 of 17 passes for 363 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 68 yards and a score. Camron Fields caught six passes for 156 yards and three scores. Khaliel Burns-Bey rushed for 105 yards and two scores. Carlos Alexander, Tyson Johnson, and Alvin Riley each caught touchdown passes from Morrell.
Topeka Seaman rolled to a 62-7 win over Shawnee Heights. Quarterback Cale Ketter passed for 387 yards and three touchdown passes with two interceptions. Coy Barta had eight receptions for 237 yards and two touchdowns, while Peyton Glaze also caught a scoring pass. Quentin Moravec rushed for 141 yards and two scores, while Grady Piper added three rushing touchdowns.
Pittsburg handled Bonner Springs, 36-13, to remain unbeaten. Jeremiah Lattimer passed for 109 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Dragon offense. Lattimer also rushed for a score. JaMarcus Davis added 110 yards rushing and caught a touchdown pass. Landon Proffitt had two scoring receptions from Lattimer.
Salina South got back in the win column with a 31-10 decision over Hutchinson. Armane Redmond rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cougar offense. Izrael Telles passed for two touchdowns and Jay Curtis also threw a touchdown pass. Curtis had a receiving touchdown, while Noah Hines caught two touchdown passes.
Class 4A:
Tonganoxie picked up a second-consecutive impressive victory with a 14-0 road shutout of Eudora. The Chieftains got on the board on a Blake Riedel touchdown run to lead 6-0 at halftime. Roman Holthaus’ touchdown catch in the second half put the Chieftains up two scores. Riedel rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and Hudson Myers threw for 151 yards including a touchdown pass to Holthaus. Tonganoxie has now defeated Topeka Hayden and Eudora in consecutive weeks.
Labette County scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to nip Emporia, 29-28. Deontae Fields rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies. Aaron Wyrick and Nolan Nash also added rushing scores for Labette County.
KC Schlagle scored twice in the third quarter to top KC Northeast (Mo.), 14-9. The Stallions struggled to run the ball, but Taveair Cole and Enrick Henderson each reached the end zone to propel Schlagle to victory.
Topeka Highland Park outscored Atchison 36-14 in the second half to win 50-34. Senior Jojo Kingcannon had a breakout night in rushing for 345 yards and five touchdowns on 29 carries. Rayshon Pollard added 146 yards and two scores as the Scots rushed for more than 520 yards on the night.
Congratulations to the El Dorado Wildcats for their 14-13 victory over Clearwater. The win snapped a 30-game losing streak for the Wildcats. El Dorado’s previous last victory came against Independence on October 21, 2022.
Class 3A:
Columbus outscored Riverton 27-7 in the second half to win 46-21. The Titans were led on offense by quarterback Cole Howard who passed for 207 yards and four touchdowns. Jonas Stover had 146 receiving yards and three scores for Columbus. Braun Stone added 178 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Howard also added a rushing score.
Wellsville throttled Jayhawk-Linn, 49-12, to improve to 3-0. Quarterback Pete Dorsey rushed for 154 yards and six touchdowns. Dorsey also passed for 183 yards and a score. Sophomores Londonn Burk and Gabe Ross scored the Jayhawks’ touchdowns on a run and a fumble return, respectively.
Iola raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead in rolling past Anderson County, 55-8. Quarterback Reed Clift passed for 281 yards and five touchdowns and added 106 yards and two scores on the ground. Austin Crooks had over 100 yards receiving with a score for the Mustangs.
Baldwin grinded out nearly 250 yards on the ground in defeating Holton, 34-15. Junior Wrigley Hamrick led the Bulldogs with 114 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Quarterback Bryis Alford added 86 yards rushing with two scores and threw a touchdown pass to Kage Blair.
Lyons picked up a key road win at Sacred Heart, 23-14. Quanick Hamilton threw for 92 yards with two touchdown passes to Detrell Stanley. Xander Young had a big game on the ground with 212 yards and a touchdown for Lyons. The Lions haven’t won three games in a single season since 2021 but have some momentum in the program having won three of their last four games. Lyons is 2-1 for the first time since 2013.
Class 2A:
Osage City rebounded from its loss to Council Grove by defeating Burlington, 43-20. Reed Silver rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Indians. Will Brown and Titan Price added scoring runs as Osage City rushed for more than 360 yards on the night. Burlington quarterback Shawn Mautz passed for 264 yards and three scores. Sophomore Alec Stice had 11 catches for 150 yards and two scores for the Wildcats.
Haven improved to 3-0 with a 28-12 win over Hillsboro. The Wildcats scored in each quarter and built a 21-0 lead before Hillsboro scored. Brogan Wray rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass. Cole Brawner led the ground game with 114 yards and a score. Jake Thalmann caught Wray’s touchdown pass. Zayne Haslett passed for 142 yards and a score and rushed for 92 more yards for Hillsboro.
Neodesha exploded for 55 points in the first half in routing Eureka, 61-0. Camryn White rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the Blue Streaks. Six different Neodesha players scored touchdowns. Tayte Leck rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to J’Vonte White, who also rushed for a score.
Central Heights picked up a second consecutive victory by handling Uniontown, 41-6. Chase Bones passed for 123 yards and added a rushing score. Sophomore Sawyer Thackeray threw a pair of touchdown passes. Cole King and Reed Compton each caught touchdown passes with Compton hauling in seven catches for 123 yards.
Chaparral rolled to a 42-14 win over Conway Springs thanks to a big night from quarterback Daniel Schmidt. Schmidt passed for 179 yards and three touchdowns and added 151 yards on the ground with two more scores. Trace Hadsall, Mason Walker, and Carter Hostetler each caught touchdown passes from Schmidt.
Class 1A:
Onaga scored in overtime to defeat Wabaunsee, 14-8. Sophomore Ryder Kolterman scored his second rushing touchdown on the Buffs’ overtime possession to provide the difference. Kolterman rushed for 155 yards and two scores on 26 carries.
Moundridge earned a 49-26 victory against Ellinwood. The Wildcats won 21-0 after the first quarter. Ellinwood senior quarterback Luke Heinz completed six of 17 passes for 162 yards with two scores against two interceptions. Junior Kale Williams had 24 rushes for 81 yards.
After being shut out the first two weeks against 4A Rock Creek and 3A Jefferson West, Centralia took out their frustrations in a 49-0 shutout of Doniphan West. The Panthers scored all 49 points in the first half in the win. Quentin Alderfer rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns while Degan Ronnebaum added 80 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Jackson Heights got back in the win column with a 42-22 win over Horton – the 100th career win for Cobra coach Caleb Wick. Sophomore Tatum Eisenbarth rushed for 257 yards and five touchdowns on 16 carries to lead the Cobra offense.
Class 8-man I
South Sumner County moved to 3-0 with a 66-12 road win versus Erie. The Outlaws have outscored teams by a combined margin of 166-32. Maddox Pond ran for 225 yards and four scores. Pond had runs of 54, 59 and 39 yards, along with a 78-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Mak Blosser had touchdowns of 16 and 60 yards and forced a safety.
Oxford beat Southeast-Cherokee, 12-6. Oxford quarterback Tyson Morris threw a pair of touchdown passes, a 25-yarder to Dwayne Fountain and seven-yarder in the second half to Caige Benson. Oxford is 2-1 and has won back-to-back games by six points.
Oakley defeated Victoria, 42-32, and won its first-ever game in eight-man football. Victoria led 8-6 after the first quarter before the Plainsmen scored 14 unanswered in the second and 16 in the third. Oakley quarterback Jett Wolf completed three of three passes for 71 yards with a touchdown. He tallied 16 rushes for 170 yards and two scores. Junior Gabe Jacques finished with 19 attempts for 108 yards and two TDs. Oakley delivered 49 rushes for 304 yards and five scores. Senior Layton Oller recorded an interception, and senior Levi Kuhlman blocked a punt. It’s the first time Oakley and Victoria have played football against each other since at least 1991, per Kansas Football History.
WaKeeney-Trego pulled away from Hoxie in a 50-30 victory in Mid-Continent League action. The game was tied at eight after the first quarter. Trego had a 22-8 edge in the second quarter and 12-8 in the third. Golden Eagle sophomore quarterback Vladon Crawford continued his big start with 15 of 26 passing for 218 yards with three scores against no interceptions. Crawford rushed 16 times for 81 yards and a pair of scores. Senior running back Jack Conness posted 16 carries for 107 yards. Sophomore Jared Aschenbrenner had a big multi-purpose day with six catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, along with four rushes for 22 yards and two scores. Junior Tripp Hudson had 20 tackles.
Hill City pulled away from Ellis, 56-22, and moved to 2-1. Hill City senior Slade Rohr enjoyed a huge performance with 398 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns, along with 19 carries for 245 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught two passes, 10 and 30 yards, and one for a TD. Senior Chase Bell posted five of seven passing for 58 yards with a score.
Class 8-man II
Macksville stayed unbeaten with a 40-34 win at Ness City. Brandon Franklin threw four touchdown passes and added a rushing score. Kaleb Granger caught two touchdown passes for the Mustangs. Ness City’s Hunter Stenzel accounted for three touchdowns on the night.
Flinthills went on the road to Central Burden and defeated the Raiders, 60-38. Standout back Beau Hall played running back and quarterback with Mustang quarterback Tripp Carney unavailable. Hall rushed for 298 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 108 yards and two more scores. Hall also added a kickoff return for a score and had ten stops on defense.
Marmaton Valley rolled 58-6 over Pleasanton. Senior Kaden McVey posted five of seven passing for 80 yards with two scores. He rushed five times for 37 yards and a pair of TDs. Senior Cooper Schraff tallied 11 rushes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Marmaton Valley has won three straight in the series, all by at least 45 points, and five of the last six.
Thunder Ridge moved to 2-1 with a 46-0 road victory against St. Francis. The Longhorns held the Indians to 42 plays for 103 yards. Thunder Ridge junior dual threat quarterback Tate Foreman posted 10 rushes for 70 yards and three TDs. Junior Rashad Stafford posted seven carries for 72 yards and three scores.
Cunningham went on the road and shut out Hutchinson Central Christian, 46-0. The Wildcats extend their win streak to 11 consecutive games after winning the Class 6-Man state championship last fall. Since returning to Eight-Man, Division II this fall, Cunningham has yet to allow a point through three weeks. The Wildcats have posted shutouts of Spearville (40-0), Norwich (28-0), and Central Christian (46-0). The Wildcats have a huge district showdown at Argonia-Attica this week.
6-Man
Palco celebrated homecoming with a 72-6 win over Chase. It was the first win for the Roosters since their last season as a stand-alone program in 2011. Clay Mitzner threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a touchdown. Colton Atcheson rushed for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass. Kallyn Martin also rushed for two scores.
Satanta snapped a 28-game losing streak with a 53-0 shutout against Pawnee Heights. Senior Augustin Salas passed and rushed for 79 yards apiece. He had one passing and one rushing score. Junior Izaak Garcia posted five carries for 46 yards and three scores. Satanta’s last on-field win game in the final week of the 2022 season.
Chetopa remained unbeaten with a 52-19 victory over Southern Coffey County. Harrison Carter led the Green Hornet ground game with 95 yards and two touchdowns. Brylan Berzas also added 80 yards on the ground and two scores while throwing a touchdown pass. Ethan Wulf scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Gabriel Robison added a score.
