Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Wichita Northwest shut out Wichita East, 14-0, in a somewhat surprising low scoring game. The Grizzlies scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter to secure the victory. Junior Augie Fast rushed for 154 yards and a score to push his two-game total to 355 yards on the ground. Jaylen Mason passed for 147 yards and a touchdown that went to Chase Carter.
Olathe East moved to 2-0 with a 21-7 win over Dodge City. The Hawks have ridden a stingy defense that has allowed 17 total points in two games. Olathe East forced three Dodge City turnovers including picking off two Red Demon passes.
Shawnee Mission West defeated Lincoln College Prep (Mo.), 42-13, on Friday to snap a 21-game losing streak. The Vikings were led by My’Shon Mitchell’s 186 rushing yards on 13 carries. Mitchell rushed for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Steven King. King added 101 yards rushing and two scores, while passing for 85 yards.
Wichita West picked up its first win of the season by defeating Emporia, 40-12. Four different Pioneers scored rushing touchdowns, including Micah Fiscus, Mencali En, Deandre Rogers, Jr, and Colby Eck-Watkins. Rogers rushed for 93 yards on 14 attempts, while Eck-Watkins added 111 yards on 13 carries. Eck-Watkins also passed for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Blue Valley West evened its record at 1-1 with a 42-12 win over Olathe West. Jaguar senior quarterback Tate Nagy passed for 131 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He threw touchdown passes to Quin Myers, Luke Goodale, and Tyler Peterson. Senior Wayne Carter led the Jaguars with 161 rushing yards and two scores. Olathe West’s touchdowns came on the ground by sophomores Cameron Kruse and Eli Ables.
Class 5A:
KC Washington rushed for more than 330 yards in a 27-12 win over Bishop Ward. Savion Stone led the Wildcats with 137 yards and a touchdown, while Cam’ron Fields added 100 yards and a score on only nine carries. Jaylin Washington intercepted two Cyclone passes and returned one for a touchdown.
Blue Valley North picked up its first win in the Gene Wier era by edging Shawnee Mission North, 21-19. The Mustangs snapped an 11-game losing streak with the win. Senior Frankie Tryban rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass for Blue Valley North.
Liberal moved to 2-0 with an 18-6 win over Wichita South. Xavier Porras led the Redskins with 167 yards and two touchdowns on 27 attempts. Junior Xavier Tafoya added 97 yards on only four carries. Ayden Juarez led the Redskin defense with 13 tackles, including two for loss.
Hutchinson scored single touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters to shutout Valley Center, 13-0. Senior Kade Smith led the Salthawks with 229 yards rushing and both touchdowns on 35 carries. The Salthawk defense held Valley Center to 43 yards of total offense.
Basehor-Linwood built a 42-0 lead in routing KC Piper, 48-14. Senior Nick Doering rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bobcats. Nathan Martin and Caelum Theno also rushed for scores, while quarterback Carson Dixson threw touchdown passes to Nash Morrison and Roman Miller.
Maize South routed Salina South, 55-22, to move to 2-0. Tate McNew passed for 194 yards and two touchdowns and added 73 yards rushing with three scores. Landon Gatto had eight receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Christian McDonald added a 61-yard touchdown catch.
Class 4A:
KC Schlagle got a big night from Cincere Lewis in shutting out KC Wyandotte, 48-0. Lewis passed for 217 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 147 yards rushing and another score. Lewis threw a pair of touchdown passes to Brenaj Price who had 110 yards receiving. Dymyn Evans and Micah Taylor also caught touchdown passes.
Winfield improved to 2-0 with a 38-15 win over Labette County. The Vikings have been impressive in averaging 38.5 points per game in their first two wins. Labette County was led by Jamaal Jackson who rushed for 201 yards and both Grizzly touchdowns on 37 carries.
McPherson scored in each quarter in doubling-up Towanda-Circle, 28-14. Senior Carter Allen completed only five passes, but they went for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Allen threw Ashton Malm and one to Carlos German. Malm also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
Lansing scored all 31 points in the second half in defeating Leavenworth, 31-7. Quarterback Reid Oakley passed for 261 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. Makhi Butler, Braden Jackson, and A.J. Allen each caught touchdown passes from Oakley.
Class 3A:
Pratt scored in each quarter in getting past Halstead, 34-21. The Greenbacks were led by senior Taye Wilson’s 171 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Cresten Pore and Caleb Strong also added rushing scores for Pratt.
Prairie View picked up a Pioneer League win by beating Santa Fe Trail, 46-20. The Buffaloes rushed for 554 yards and seven rushing touchdowns in the game. Standout junior Parker Schwarz carried 13 times for 303 yards and five touchdowns to lead Prairie View. Josh Goodwin added 133 yards and two scores on 18 attempts.
Hugoton improved to 2-0 thanks to a 35-0 shutout of Ulysses. The Eagle defense was once again dominant in posting a second consecutive shutout. Hugoton held Ulysses to 36 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers.
Columbus moved to 2-0 with a 28-8 win over Galena. Jett Tanner rushed for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Titan offense. Syler Schuburger added 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jack Vilela passed for 82 yards and a touchdown that went to Jayden Rodriguez.
Smoky Valley picked up its first win of the season with a 43-0 shutout of Belle Plaine. The Vikings were led by senior Gavin Stambaugh who rushed for 93 yards and five touchdowns. Ezekiel Baker added 113 yards and a score on 16 attempts.
Freshman Cole Parrish passed for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead Baxter Springs past Afton (Okla.), 13-8. Parrish threw touchdown passes to senior Jacob Grant and sophomore Calbe Grant.
Class 2A:
Haven started the season 2-0 for the first time in at least 20 years by beating Nickerson, 56-8. The Wildcats rushed for more than 275 yards in the game and added 117 yards through the air with two touchdowns from Nash Wray. Wray threw touchdown passes to Kolton Altvater and Chandler Ingold. Haven forced three Nickerson turnovers on the night.
Ellsworth beat Republic County, 45-14. Will Donley completed all five of his passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Senior Landin Johnson led the Bearcats with 185 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Daxton Leiker and Tucker Goss each rushed for scores and Lieker caught Donley’s touchdown pass.
Council Grove rolled to a 50-13 win over Mission Valley. The Braves were led by senior Ace Monihen’s 105 yards and five touchdowns on eight carries. Sophomore Luke Stewart passed for 271 yards and a touchdown, including 211 yards to Landon Dody.
Humboldt scored four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 52-14 win over Cherryvale. Senior Blake Ellis rushed for 132 yards and four touchdowns for the Cubs. He also passed for 96 yards. Cole Mathes added 122 yards and a scores on nine carries, while Mason Sterling added 73 yards and a touchdown on three attempts.
Osage City scored 40 points in the first half in beating Cair Parvel, 54-20. Quarterback Kasen Parsons passed for 110 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 115 yards and two more scores. The Indians were led by Dylan Theel’s 111 yards and three touchdowns on four carries. Logan White also rushed for a touchdown for the Indians.
Russell defeated Oakley, 35-0, and has not allowed an offensive touchdown yet this year. RHS scored seven points in the first quarter, seven in the second, eight in the third and 13 in the fourth. Senior Mason Rohr had 17 of 24 passing for 242 yards with a score against an interception.
Class 1A:
Valley Heights beat Onaga, 42-20. The Mustangs held Onaga to just 47 passing yards and four yards per carry.
Ellinwood rolled over Herington, 47-0. Senior quarterback Landon Simpson delivered six carries for 89 yards and a score and threw a touchdown. Senior Cason Merritt and junior Drake Hosman posted two rushing touchdowns.
Jefferson Co. North got back in the win column with a 28-14 victory over Horton in the battle of the Chargers. Eli Weishaar led JCN with 120 yards on the ground with four touchdowns.
Class 8-man I
Lincoln bounced back from the opening loss to Ellis and beat Pike Valley, 64-12. Lincoln led 40-0 after the first quarter in a game that was called at halftime. Leopard sophomore Jeremiah Miller completed eight of 10 passes for 228 yards with three touchdowns. His twin, sophomore Xavier Miller, posted four catches for 155 yards and two scores. Lincoln picked off four passes.
Ellis moved to 2-0 in its eight-man era with another wild win. This time, Ellis held off Hill City, 54-48, in double overtime. Freshman Trenton Schartz continued his incredible start with seven touchdowns accounted for. He completed nine of 19 passes for 177 yards with five scores against one interception. Schartz delivered 14 carries for 154 yards and two scores. Junior Carson Schartz posted 20 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. HC delivered 396 yards of total offense. Hill City junior quarterback Tate Balthazor posted 24 carries for 105 yards and four scores. Senior Dayton Stephen finished with another huge game: 36 touches for 244 yards and three scores.
St. Francis defeated Wheatland-Grinnell, 54-6, and moved to 2-0. Sainty is much more experienced this year. Junior Lucas Raile had nine of 11 passing for 195 yards with a score. Senior Asher Robbins posted a pick-six, and junior Dayton Fromholtz finished with a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Mankato-Rock Hills had all of its yards on the ground and posted a 66-16 win against Thunder Ridge. Thunder Ridge led 8-0 after the first quarter, and Rock Hills led 28-16 at halftime before the game flipped in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Cooper McDill had 18 carries for 224 yards and three scores. Senior Isaiah Ridgeway delivered 10 rushes for 83 yards and three scores. Junior Evan Slavik completed 21 of 36 passes for 220 yards with two scores against three interceptions. TR senior Jimmy Escobar had seven catches for 105 yards.
Class 8-man II
Logan-Palco was expected to be much improved this year and opened 2-0 after a 62-34 win against La Crosse. Senior Rhett Kats posted six of 11 of 139 yards with two scores against one interception. Junior Carson Knipp posted 15 rushes for 72 yards and a score. Senior Mayson Vahling delivered 15 rushes for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Marmaton Valley rolled to a 72-8 victory against Yates Center and moved to 2-0. Senior Brayden Lawson completed six of nine passes for 191 yards with three touchdowns against zero interceptions. Sophomore Cooper Scharff finished with three carries for 82 yards and two scores. Senior Jaedon Granere posted two catches for 86 yards, both for scores. MV caught eight passes for 207 yards and four scores.
Minneola held off Spearville, 30-26. The Wildcats posted another huge offensive yardage game with 170 passing and 259 rushing yards. Junior Levi Lang posted a score against two interceptions, along with 12 rushes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Allen Skeen finished with six catches for 83 yards and a score.
Bucklin posted Kiowa County, 56-16. Senior Lucas Kirk posted 13 of 18 passing for 143 yards with two touchdowns. Senior Aiden Haskell delivered 13 rushes for 138 yards and three scores. Kirk posted 14 carries for 53 yards and two TDs.
6-Man
Altoona-Midway defeated Burrton, 64-18. Jet senior William Stackhouse posted three of four passing for 100 yards, all for touchdowns. He had nine rushes for 91 yards and a pair of scores.
Non-KSHSAA
Reno County Homeschool defeated Stafford, 52-26. Sophomore quarterback Bo Smith posted nine of 15 passing for 152 yards with four scores. He rushed 11 times for 113 yards and three scores. Sophomore Jett Smith recorded six catches for 111 yards and three scores. The game started Thursday and was postponed to Saturday evening because of lightning. Reno County led 16-0 before play stopped. Reno County led 52-12 before Stafford scored the final two TDs.
