Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Blue Valley West outscored St. James Academy 20-14 in the fourth quarter to pull off a wild 53-50 win. The Jaguars were led by Sage Huffman who rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries. Tate Nagy passed for 229 yards and a score that went to Huffman. Nagy also rushed for a touchdown. St. James was led by Ben Wheeler who passed for 233 yards and four touchdowns and added 118 yards on the ground with three scores.  

Lawrence Free State improved to 6-0 with a 49-6 win over Shawnee Mission North. The Firebirds led 28-6 at halftime and exploded for three touchdowns in the third quarter. Quarterback Wesley Edison passed for 124 yards and two touchdowns and added 115 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Judah Jones led the Bison with 79 yards rushing, while Jeremiah Looney added 52 yards and North’s only score.

Olathe South dominated Shawnee Mission Northwest, 51-0, in one of the more surprising final margins of Week 6. The Falcons were led by senior quarterback Bryce Noernberg who passed for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and added 146 yards rushing with four scores. Both of Noernberg’s touchdown passes went to Cooper Warren who had four receptions for 94 yards.

Wichita Heights pushed its record to 5-1 with a 54-6 rout of Wichita Southeast. The Falcons rushed for 279 yards on the night led by Jameson Holland’s 81 yards and a touchdown. Dennis Carter rushed for only eight yards on two carries, but both went for touchdowns. Darius Rogers added a touchdown run and Aven Mboule caught a touchdown pass from Tavion Johnson. Southeast was led by Ronelle Slaughter’s 100 yards rushing on 13 carries. Slaughter scored the only touchdown for the Golden Buffaloes.


Class 5A:

Spring Hill scored in each quarter in rolling past Paola, 62-28. Senior Colton McKanna carried 32 times for 212 yards and four touchdowns to push his season total to 1,157 yards and 20 scores. Junior quarterback Tyson Beashore completed 13 of 16 passes for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns – one to McKanna and one to Jackson Torrez.

Valley Center scored all 27 points in the first half of a 27-7 win over Andover. The Hornets improved to 4-2 on the season. Dai’Mont Mucker rushed 21 times for 213 yards and two scores and Ethan Outley added a rushing score for the Hornets. Hank Welu added 165 yards passing with Mucker catching three for 82 yards.

Liberal remained unbeaten with a 21-14 win over WAC rival Great Bend. Brooks Kappelmann threw touchdown passes to Zayden Martinez and Aidan Schwindt and Xavier Porras added a rushing score. Sophomore quarterback Daxton Minton rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass for Great Bend.

Hutchinson went on the road and picked up a 49-21 win over Haysville Campus. The Salthawks rushed for 327 yards on the night led by junior Terrell King’s 101 yards and a touchdown on just three carries. Robert Hunter and Zion Burgess each rushed for touchdowns, while Kade Smith added two rushing scores to go along with his 97 yards. Hunter also tossed a touchdown pass to Devon Spiller.

Max Huston passed for 323 yards and four touchdowns as Topeka Seaman routed Leavenworth, 56-0. Huston threw three touchdown passes to Callen Barta who caught eight balls for 273 yards. Bryer Finley caught Huston’s fourth touchdown pass. Huston also rushed for a score along with Samson Tootle and Jack Bloom. Seaman evened its record at 3-3 and snapped a three-game losing streak.


Class 4A:

Atchison improved to 6-0 with a 64-8 win over Topeka Highland Park. The Phoenix scored 36 points in the first quarter and added three more touchdowns before halftime. Jaden Carter rushed for four touchdowns, while Trey Carter and Xiomar Hernandez each scored once on the ground.

Coffeyville rolled to a 49-14 SEK League win over Labette County. Junior back Aaron Tunstall rushed for 262 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries to lead the Golden Tornado. Deontay Galindo added a rushing score and Axel Erne’s only completion went for a 29-yard touchdown to Amanie Luten. Kendall Holtzman passed for 130 yards, including a touchdown to Barrett Hestand for Labette County. Jamaal Jackson added 121 yards on the ground and a score for the Grizzlies.

Chanute scored with :11 seconds remaining and converted the two-point conversion to top SEK League rival Fort Scott, 29-28. Quinton Harding returned from injury to rush for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Harding had rushed for 455 yards and five scores in the Blue Comets first two games before missing the last three contests. Kris Harding, II passed for 166 yards including touchdowns to Jase Tarter and Nathan Wilson.

Trailing 21-17, Wellington quarterback Dusty Bannister connected with Maddox Black on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 2.7 seconds remaining to lift the Crusaders to a 23-21 road win at McPherson. Bannister passed for 221 yards and two scores on the night – the other going to sophomore Milo Elder. Nick Giefer also returned an interception for a score for the Crusaders. Wellington picked off three McPherson passes on the night. The Wellington defense held McPherson to 133 total yards, including 36 rush yards on 24 attempts.


Class 3A:

Wellsville held off Prairie View, 36-29, to remain unbeaten and atop the Pioneer League standings. Willie Dorsey passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns and added a short touchdown run for the Eagles. Dorsey connected with Dezmond Winton five times for 108 yards and two scores, and Kenyon Gillins five times for 106 yards and a score. Prairie View continued to display a potent rushing attack in compiling 388 yards on the ground in the game. Senior Gabe Murillo rushed for 158 yards and a score, while sophomore Parker Schwarz added 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Scott City shut out Holcomb 14-0 in the second half to pick up a key 21-14 win in the GWAC on Saturday. The Beavers trailed 14-7 at halftime but scored once in the third and fourth quarter to improve to 5-1 on the season. Damon Mesa led Holcomb with 167 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Hesston scored a touchdown in overtime and then held Clearwater out on its possession to pick up a key district win, 28-21. Hesston’s Reed Friesen passed for 203 yards including touchdown passes to Jackson Fry and Karter Gonzalez. Gonzalez also rushed for a score as did Asher Deutschendorf.

Chapman picked up its second win of the season by racing past Wichita Trinity, 50-22. The Irish rushed for 380 yards on the night led by Cade Hanney’s 242 yards and three touchdowns. Kelan Gruver added a pair of scores and 67 yards for Chapman. Harvey Zimmerman passed for 290 yards and rushed for 85 yards and two scores for Trinity.

Parsons remained unbeaten with a 48-12 win over Galena. Viking quarterback Tra Mack passed for 220 yards and threw touchdown passes to J.J. Kendrick and Jahmarcus Washington. Jahmarion Washington rushed for 227 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries for Parsons. The Vikings take on Frontenac (5-1) in a key district game this week.


Class 2A:

Larned improved to 5-1 with a 48-8 win over Southwestern Heights. Senior Luke Fischer rushed 21 times for 221 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Indian offense. Cordell Hammeke and Ty Smith also added touchdowns. Larned has a huge test at unbeaten Hoisington this week.

Garden Plain made the long trip to Centralia and defeated Class 1A’s second-ranked team, 35-6. Gage Lee rushed for 243 yards and two scores on 18 carries to lead the Owls. Lee has now rushed for 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns on the season including 559 yards and three scores the past two weeks. Quarterback Brady Brack completed all four of his passes for 70 yards and a score.

Osage City defeated Humboldt, 36-22. Osage City led 7-0 after the first quarter and 17-6 at halftime. Indian sophomore Kasen Parsons completed 15 of 29 passes for 215 yards with a score and an interception. Senior Cooper Parsons rushed 13 times for 212 yards and two TDs. Kasen Parsons had 17 rushes for 82 yards and two scores. Sophomore Quenten Stark had six catches for 108 yards. Humboldt junior Blake Ellis had 19 of 34 passing for 202 yards with a score against an interception. Ellis had 24 carries for 109 yards and a TD. Senior Sam Hull and junior Cole Mathes had 14 catches for 136 yards. Junior Brody Gunderman had a 45-yard TD catch. Osage City is 5-1, 2-0 in District 2. Humboldt stands at 5-1, 2-1.

Norton defeated Beloit, 26-0, and improved to 6-0. Junior Eli Jones continued his big season with 11 of 21 passing for 182 yards and zero touchdowns against one interception. Norton sophomore Tyler Backman had 16 rushes for 71 yards and three TDs. Norton held Beloit to 29 carries for 94 yards. Norton is 6-0, 2-0 in District 8. Beloit stands at 3-3, 2-1.


Class 1A:

Jackson Heights rushed for 448 yards in a 48-12 victory over Troy. Joshua Smith, Kade Holliday, and Weston Schultejans each rushed for more than 100 yards in the game. Smith led the Cobras with 123 yards and a score, while Holliday added 114 yards (2TD) and Schultejans had 104 yards (TD). Sophomore quarterback Drake Mellies also added a pair of rushing scores.

Valley Heights held off Class 3A Marysville, 38-30, in a non-district game. The Mustangs rushed for 270 yards led by Kaison Bigham’s 102 yards and a touchdown. Carson Spoonts and Jayden DeWalt each scored and added 85 and 83 rushing yards, respectively. Spoonts also tossed a touchdown pass to Royce Ekstrum.

Sedgwick defeated Whitewater-Remington, 42-7. Sedgwick had leads of 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-7 at halftime. Sedgwick scored 28 unanswered points in the second half. Junior Corey Crumrine completed 22 of 34 passes for 448 yards with five scores. Senior Tray Schroeder, a first-year transfer from Norwich and formerly the Eagles’ quarterback, had 18 carries for 75 yards and a TD. Senior Jeff Nold hauled in five catches for 143 yards. Junior Dallas Lagree delivered six catches for 128 yards and two TDs. Sedgwick is 5-1, 2-0 in District 6, while Remington fell to 1-5, 1-2.


Class 8-man I

West Elk rolled to a 56-7 win over Cedar Vale-Dexter. Junior Creyo Koop rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Trent Haag passed for 87 yards and threw touchdown passes to Maddex Moreno and Uriah Tillapaugh.

Pratt-Skyline evened its record at 3-3 with a 54-8 victory over Kiowa County. Senior Brayden Berens passed for 136 yards and four touchdowns – three of which went to Jake Hittle. Ismael Carrasco caught the other touchdown pass on a 60-yard bomb. Carrasco added a rushing score, while Berens rushed for a team-high 169 yards and two scores.

Argonia-Attica improved to 5-1 with a 57-0 shutout of Udall. The Titans scored 22 points in the first quarter and added 35 points in the second to end the game at half. Seniors Thomas Deviney and Dalton Morrison each rushed for two scores, while sophomore Carson Vinyard rushed for a touchdown and returned a punt for a score.

Burlingame outscored Maranatha Academy, 74-26, on Friday night. J.D. Tyson connected with Dane Winters on an 11-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring. The Bearcats lead was just 7-0 after the first quarter. The two teams traded touchdowns before Burlingame would score 38 consecutive points to take a 52-14 lead into halftime. Burlingame stopped a two-game losing streak with the victory. The Bearcats have challenging district games remaining at Madison (4-2) and home with Lyndon (6-0).

WaKeeney-Trego pitched its third consecutive shutout with a 46-0 decision over Ness City. The Golden Eagles have won four straight to move to 4-2 on the season. Sophomore Ashton Wynn rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns and threw touchdown passes to Jaryn Wildholz and Cass Smith.

Little River defeated Herington, 76-26. Senior Andrew Smith completed six of eight passes for 126 yards with two scores against no interceptions. Smith had 18 carries for 249 yards and six scores. LR delivered 475 yards. Junior Kyler Bergkamp had three catches for 73 yards and a score. Jaren Garrison had eight tackles, three for loss. Bergkamp recorded two interceptions, and Smith had one. LR is 4-2, 2-1 in District 4. Herington is much improved and stands at 4-2, 2-1.

Oswego won its third straight contest with a 54-19 decision against Flinthills. Junior Josh Hutchinson recorded 21 carries for 266 yards and two scores. Sophomore Owen Jackson finished with 16 carries for 100 yards and four TDs. Oswego’s single wing churned out 46 carries for 414 yards and eight touchdowns. Oswego and West Elk will play for the likely District 1 title this week.

Hoxie moved to 5-1 with a 36-24 victory at Hill City. Coach Lance Baar won career game No. 99, all with the Indians. Junior Duncan Bell finished 19 of 31 for 289 yards with three scores against no interceptions. Four players carried for the Indians en route to 30 carries for 191 yards and two TDs. Junior Sam Watkins finished with seven catches for 125 yards and a score. Hill City’s Tate Balthazor suffered injury in practice and did not play. He had started at quarterback for the previous month. Senior Aiden Amrein and junior Dayton Stephen both returned for Hill City after they had been away from the team for the last month. Amrein completed 12 of 24 passing for 194 yards with a score and an interception. Amrein delivered 16 carries for 85 yards and two scores. Stephen finished with eight touches for 103 yards and a score, and 134 all-purpose yards. Hoxie is 5-1, 3-0 in District 6, while Hill City is 3-3, 1-2.


Class 8-man II

Thunder Ridge won its third straight contest with a 52-6 win against Wheatland-Grinnell. Senior Mason Baker continued his huge season with 12 of 12 passing for 162 yards and three scores. Baker, the state’s leading rusher, finished with six carries for 109 yards and three TDs. Thunder Ridge is 4-2, 2-0 in District 6.

Lakeside-Downs held onto beat Beloit St. John’s-Tipton, 40-36. Senior Ian Kresin rushed 18 times for 181 yards and five scores. Junior Kaden McCoy finished with 21 carries and 178 yards with a touchdown. Junior Tyson Gates recorded 20 carries for 105 yards and two scores, along with 61 passing yards with a touchdown. Senior Chance Jermark finished with 224 all-purpose yards and 18 tackles. Lakeside trailed 20-14 at halftime, though gained separation in the third quarter with a 20-2 margin. Lakeside is 4-2, 1-1.

Dighton held off Bucklin, 32-28. Dighton star quarterback Carson Shimer remains out. Junior Daniel Cramer completed nine of 15 passes for 155 yards and two scores. He rushed 24 times for 97 yards. Junior Ryland Price delivered six carries for 50 yards and two TDs. Dighton took advantage of five Bucklin turnovers. Dighton is 3-3, 1-1 in District 8, while Bucklin is 2-4, 0-3. Bucklin has lost four in a row, including by two, two and four points.

South Barber shut out St. John, 50-0, thanks to a 30-point first quarter. Briggs Jewell passed for 173 yards and two scores and added a rushing touchdown. Bryson Rathgeber rushed for a team-high 83 yards and two scores. Xander Myers and Oakley Duvall each caught touchdown passes from Jewell with Duvall registering 92 receiving yards.

Hodgeman County beat Satanta, 52-6, behind a big night from senior Owen Reece. Reece passed for 256 yards and six touchdowns while also adding a rushing score. Reece threw two touchdowns each to Hazen Rydquist, Devin Shank, and Cade Jones.


6-Man

Chetopa bounced back from its loss to Waverly and defeated Centre-Lost Springs, 52-39. Senior Blake Carter had another big game with 23 carries for 272 yards and five scores. Chetopa improved to 5-1, 4-1 in district.

Golden Plains defeated Triplains-Brewster, 45-0. Junior Josh Rath had nine of 10 passing for 84 yards and two scores. Sophomore Dylan Wark finished with seven carries for 197 yards and four scores. GP is 2-4, 2-1 in District 4.

Peabody-Burns beat Altoona-Midway, 64-19. Freshman Aiden Hurst continued his nice year with 13 of 17 passing for 261 yards with six touchdowns. He also ran 10 times for 65 yards with a score. Peabody-Burns stands at 4-2, 2-1 in District 1.
