Class 6A

Olathe North wins slugfest against Gardner-Edgerton, 13-2

Olathe North grabbed the upper hand in the 6A East district standings with a 13-2 victory over Gardner-Edgerton.

Gardner-Edgerton got on the board in the second quarter forcing an Olathe North safety. The Blazers led 2-0 until late in the third quarter.

Olathe North finally broke through on a 10-yard touchdown run by T. J. Porter TD with 2:04 remaining in the 3Q. Porter’s run gave the Eagles a 6-2 lead.

That scored remained until late in the fourth quarter when Olathe North’s Jason Parrish picked off a Trailblazer pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown.

Olathe North remains unbeaten and atop the 6A East standings, while Gardner-Edgerton falls to 3-2 with losses to the Eagles and 5A No. 1 Mill Valley.

Blue Valley West edges Blue Valley Northwest

Blue Valley West got a fourth-quarter touchdown run from Zach Darche to edge defending 6A champion Blue Valley Northwest, 27-26. It marked the second consecutive 1-point decision for the Jaguars which lost 34-33 to Staley (Mo.) last week.

Darche passed for 162 yards and two scores and Sage Huffman provided 132 rushing yards and a score for Blue Valley West. Crew Myers caught three passes for 100 yards and a scores and Andrew Coltharp added 54 yards and caught Darche’s second touchdown.

Grant Stubblefield rushed for 127 yards and a score for Blue Valley Northwest. The Huskies have now lost two straight after last week’s 40-34 defeat against Missouri Class 6 power Lee’s Summit North.

Olathe West outscores Shawnee Mission Northwest on Thursday night

Mason McGavran connected on a fourth-down touchdown pass to Elijah Hakim with just over a minute to go to propel Olathe West to a 53-49 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest on Thursday night.

The two teams traded blows in the second half with huge performances from McGavran and Vincent Gatschet for the Owls and Malik O’Atis from Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Northwest led 28-13 at the half before Olathe West scored three consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter. McGavran started the streak a 40-yard touchdown pass to Hakim to pull the Owls within 28-20. Gatschet added a pair of short touchdown runs to put Olathe West up 32-28 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

O’Atis answered right back with a 77-yard sprint – his second touchdown of the night – that put the Cougars up 35-32.

Olathe west regained the lead in the fourth quarter as Gatchet scored from 23 yards out for a 39-35 advantage.

Later in the quarter, O’Atis broke free from 71 yards to put Shawnee Mission Northwest back in front, 42-39.

Less than a minute later, McGavran scored on a 45-yard touchdown run to give the Owls a 46-42 lead with 3:14 remaining.

A couple of plays later, O’Atis answered again with his fourth scores of the night – this one from 81 yards away to give Northwest a 49-46 lead with 2:51 left.

McGavran provided the final answer on his second touchdown connection with Hakim to give the Owls the 53-49 win.

McGavran passed for 222 yards and three touchdowns and added 114 yards rushing and two scores. Gatschet led the Owls with 26 carries for 281 yards and three scores.

O’Atis shined in the losing effort with 375 rushing yards and four touchdowns and 36 receiving yards.

Junction City handles Washburn Rural, 24-6

Junction City scored 24 unanswered points in defeating Washburn Rural, 24-6. With the victory, the Blue Jays remain in contention in the Centennial League race setting up a huge showdown with rival Manhattan for the Silver Trophy next week.

Washburn Rural scored first on a Branton DeWeese touchdown pass for a 6-0 lead.

Junction City took a 7-6 lead into halftime on a Xavier Felton touchdown run in the second quarter. Felton added his second scoring run mid-way through the third quarter for a 14-6 lead.

Felton added a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to put the Blue Jays up 21-6.

Class 5A

Maize outscores Maize South, 63-26

Class 5A No. 2 Maize continued its dominance with a 63-28 win against rival Maize South.

Maize has scored at least 42 points in every contest. The Eagles led 21-7 after the first quarter and 35-10 at halftime.

Avery Johnson, the state’s top recruit and Kansas State commit, continued his remarkable season. Johnson completed 10 of 17 passes for 207 yards with a score. He rushed 10 times for 131 yards and three scores. Bryce Cohoon, a Syracuse commit, had five catches for 168 yards and a score.

The game had nearly 1,100 yards of total offense, including 582 from Maize.

Maverick sophomore quarterback Tate McNew enjoyed another massive game with 35 of 61 for 419 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Justin Stephens also threw a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Johnson’s numbers continue to be near perfect: 62 of 86 passing for 1,248 yards with 14 scores against no interceptions, along with 35 carries for 324 yards and seven scores.

De Soto shuts out Shawnee Heights in UKC showdown

De Soto scored three times in the second half as part of a 28-0 shut out of Shawnee Heights in a key United Kansas Conference showdown.

Wildcat quarterback Carson Miller second-quarter touchdown run proved to be the only scoring of the first half.

De Soto extended its lead in the third quarter as Miller added his second touchdown run – this one from 15 yards out.

Bennet Hutchinson later added a short scoring run for a 21-0 lead. It is Hutchinson’s 10th rushing touchdown of the season.

Miller added his third rushing scored mid-way through the fourth quarter for the 28-0 victory.

Great Bend defeats Dodge City in OT

Great Bend used a fourth-quarter comeback and overtime to defeat Dodge City, 21-14.

Dodge City led 14-0 early in the fourth quarter before Great Bend got on the board on a Cody Miller 10-yard touchdown run.

Mid-way through the fourth quarter, Cayden Scheuerman connected with Colton Brack on a touchdown pass to tie the game at 14.

In overtime, Great Bend got the ball first and scored as Scheuerman hit Brack for a second touchdown.

The Panthers then held Dodge City out of the end zone as a Red Demon fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete.

Scheuerman passed for 156 yards and two scores in the game, while Miller rushed for 79 yards and a sore. Brack caught seven passes for 75 yards and the two touchdowns.

After losing 19 consecutive games, the Panthers have now picked up three straight victories.

Valley Center outscores Salina Central

Valley Center improved to 4-1 with a 43-36 win over Salina Central.

Hornet running back Dai’mont Mucker rushed for 340 yards and three scores on 37 attempts on Friday night.

The Hornets have their best start since a 5-0 start to the 2017 season. Valley Center finished 5-4 in 2017.

Class 4A

Wamego rolls past Coffeyville in battle of unbeatens

Wamego remained unbeaten with a 34-6 win over Coffeyville in a battle of unbeaten teams. The game was voted on by the fans as the Kpreps Game of the Week.

The Red Raiders opened the scoring on a short touchdown run by Landon Machor for a 7-0 lead. Wamego scored again in the second quarter as Colin Donahue connected with Chase Cottam on a long touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

Noah Fike then added a pair of field goals in the second quarter as Wamego took a 20-0 lead into halftime.

The Red Raiders added another special teams score in the third quarter as Hagan Johnson returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown. Johnson later caught a touchdown pass from Donahue as Wamego took control 34-0.

Coffeyville scored in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Axel Erne to Amanie Luten.

Louisburg outlasts Eudora in OT, 28-27

Louisburg picked up its fourth consecutive victory as the Wildcats outlasted Class 4A No. 5 Eudora, 28-27 in overtime.

The Wildcats had to feel fortunate to be in the game late in the second half. Louisburg had overcome three turnovers in the game and was still tied with Eudora, 21-21.

Mid-way through the fourth quarter, Eudora drove inside the Wildcat 15-yard line. But the Louisburg defense stuffed the Cardinals’ fourth-down and short play and took over. Louisburg was unable to move the ball and had to punt away a few plays later. The punt hit a Eudora returner and was picked up by a Wildcat defender.

Neither team would threaten the remainder of the game. Louisburg crossed midfield late but had to settle on a 55-yard field goal attempt with :05 seconds remaining. Layne Ryals’ kick had the distance, but sailed wide right resulting in overtime.

Eudora scored first in overtime on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kole Manley to tight end Jaden Hamm. Initially it looked like the ball was out of Hamm’s reach, but he batted it up and hauled in the touchdown before hitting the ground. The Cardinals decided to go for the two-point conversion, but Manley’s pass appeared to be deflected at the line and fell incomplete in the end zone.

Louisburg answered the Cardinals score on a touchdown pass from Declan Battle to Mason Dobbins. Ryals’ PAT gave the Wildcats the 28-27 victory.

Bishop Miege shuts out Blue Valley

Class 4A’s top-ranked Bishop Miege delivered and impressive performance on Friday in shutting out Blue Valley, 40-0.

The Stags exploded for 21 points in the second quarter as Mac Armstrong through a pair of touchdown passes sandwiched around a Logan Thilges short touchdown run. Armstrong opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Teryn Jackson before hitting Isaiah Coppage for a touchdown late in the half.

Armstrong connected with Coppage two more times in the second half and Thilges added his second touchdown of the night to complete the 40-0 victory.

Armstrong completed 31 of 36 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Coppage caught ten passes for 161 yards and three scores.

John Price led Blue Valley with 101 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

Labette County stops streak with win over Fort Scott

Congratulations to Labette County as the Grizzlies end a 15-game losing streak with a 25-8 win over Fort Scott.

Quarterback Kendall Holtzman passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

----


Class 3A

Andale opens eyes with a huge win over Nickerson

All attention quickly turned to top-ranked Andale on Friday night as the Indians scored 108 points in a shutout at Nickerson.

The Indians led 78-0 at halftime in claiming their 43rd straight win.

Andale will take on No. 2 Wichita Collegiate next week.

Pratt wins at Hoisington, 37-13

Pratt won, 37-13, at Hoisington on the Cardinals’ Homecoming.

Pratt had a variety of players step up, especially senior Johnny Martinez. A two-time state powerlifting champion and versatile player, Martinez is playing with two torn ligaments that require significant taping and support to the left foot/ankle. Martinez opened the scoring with a halfback 53-yard touchdown pass to 6-foot-4 senior Justus Tatro.

Then, single-wing quarterback Max Younie tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass to senior J’air Johnson. Hoisington closed to 20-13 late in the first half, and then Tony Moore picked off a pass. Hoisington ran out of time in Pratt territory before halftime.

On the second play of the third quarter, Hoisington speedy junior running back Mason Alderdice broke free down the right sideline. Martinez came over and ripped out the ball and recovered it at the Greenback 24-yard line. Six plays later, sophomore Taye Wilson caught his first career TD pass on a 45-yard liner across the middle. Pratt controlled the middle, especially with experienced senior lineman Ethan Rector.

Pratt is 4-1, Hoisington 3-2. The game showed Pratt as a key contender in 3A West, while Hoisington will remain in the mix in 2A West. Johnson caught a 14-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. Pratt kicked a late 42-yard field goal.

Class 2A

Silver Lake edges Rossville in OT to win the War on 24

In one of the state’s best rivalries, Silver Lake scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in overtime to top rival Rossville, 22-21, in the ‘War on 24’.

Rossville led 7-0 for much of the game on the strength of a Braiden Hensley touchdown run. The Bulldawgs tacked on another score early in the fourth quarter on a Kade Perine touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.

Silver Lake pulled within a score on a Tanner Martin touchdown pass to Eli Bames.

Then, with :08 seconds left, Martin rolled out to the right from midfield and heaved a ball down field where freshman Dayne Johnson hauled in the 43-yard touchdown to tie the game.

In overtime, Hensley scored first to put Rossville back up 21-14.

On Silver Lake’s possession, Martin hit Troy Heiman in the middle of the field to pull the Eagles within 21-20. Silver Lake coach Logan Pegram called timeout. The Eagles lined up to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Martin then hit Heiman on what looked like the same play to give the Eagles the 22-21 victory.

Russell blanks TMP, 22-0

At the beginning of the season, Russell was projected to have its first winning record since 2003. The Broncos took a huge step in that direction with a 22-0 road win at rival TMP in highly competitive Class 2A, District 8.

Wide receiver Jace Peerman caught a 70-yard scoring pass just before halftime.

Russell continues to make huge defensive improvements and has allowed 19.3 points a contest. The Broncos posted its first shutout win since 2019. This will likely be Russell’s best statistical defense in 10-plus years.

TMP is 3-2, though has not scored an offensive touchdown in the last two weeks.

Osage City routs Sedgwick, 52-28

Osage City scored 31 points in the first quarter to pull away from Sedgwick as part of a 52-28 victory.

The Indians scored early on a 59-yard touchdown run by quarterback Landon Boss.

After a Sedgwick score, Boss broke free for a 73-yard score. After an Osage City field goal. Boss added his third touchdown of the quarter for a 24-6 lead. Cooper Parsons short touchdown run completed the scoring in the first quarter and provided the Indians with a 31-6 lead.

Boss threw a touchdown pass before halftime and added his fourth rushing score in the second half as Osage City continued to pull away.

Boss rushed for 174 yards and those four scores on 15 attempts. He also passed for 264 yards and a score.

Class 1A

Inman handles Hutchinson Trinity, 21-3

Top-ranked Inman methodically pulled away from previously-unbeaten Hutchinson Trinity, 21-3.

After a Trinity turnover, the Teutons scored late in the second quarter on a short touchdown run by Samuel Shober for an 8-0 lead.

The lead remained until early in the fourth quarter, when Inman turned another Celtic turnover into points. This time it was Harrison Brunk carrying from 20-yards out for a 14-0 advantage.

Inman added a late score with under a minute to go on a touchdown pass from Josiah Buller to Eli Brunk.

Trinity connected on a 32-yard field goal by Moises Segoviano on the final play of the game.

Plainville picks up first win of 2022

Plainville was winless and pulled out a key District 8 road victory against rival Ellis, 30-25.

Several times, Plainville and its veteran coaching staff of Grant Stephenson, Justin Casey and Ryan Becker has improved in several seasons after some slow previous starts.

Plainville had scored just 44 points in the first month before Friday’s 30-point output against the Railers.

Conway Springs shut out Ellinwood

After dropping its first three games of the season, Conway Springs has now posted lopsided victories in consecutive weeks. On Friday, the Cardinals topped Ellionwood, 36-0.

The Cardinals rushed for more than 360 yards in the defeating the Eagles. Brayden Kunz rushed 22 times for 251 yards and two scores to lead Conway Springs.

The Cardinal defense held Ellinwood to 91 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers.

Class 8-Man, Division I

Turner leads Madison past Lyndon in key district game

Madison scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break a 26-26 tie and defeat Lyndon, 40-26. The Bulldogs picked up a key victory in the ultra-competitive Eight-Man, Division I, District 2.

Bryson Turner rushed for 325 yards and six touchdowns on the night for Madison. Turner carried 43 times and also completed 10- of 13 passes for 80 yards.

Neither team held a two-score lead on the night until Turner’s 27-yard touchdown with 10:09 remaining provided the game’s final margin.

Jalen Massey rushed for 111 yards and a score and Evan Feuerborn added 72 rush yards and two touchdowns for Lyndon.

Goessel defeats Solomon behind Wiens big night

Goessel won for the second consecutive week to improve to 3-2 overall. The Bluebirds defeated Solomon on Friday night, 54-22.

Jake Wiens rushed for 278 yards and six touchdowns to lead Goessel.

Class 8-Man, Division II

Vincent sets state marks as Canton-Galva rolls

Canton-Galva continues to set multiple records and improved to 5-0 with a 54-0 shutout of Fairfield.

Senior Jett Vincent picked off a pass, one of three pick-sixes for the Eagles on the night. Vincent has 32 career INTs and six career pick-sixes, both eight-man state marks.

Canton-Galva has returned seven interceptions for touchdowns this season, which ties a state mark. The Eagles ran just eight offensive plays in the win versus Fairfield.
