Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Olathe North rebounded from a loss to Olathe West with a 54-16 thrashing of Olathe South. The Eagles put up 550 yards of total offense in flying past the Falcons. Quarterback Noah Palmer passed for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added 71 yards and a score on the ground. Jacob Parrish rushed for a team-high 120 yards and a score on only five carries. Parrish also had two receptions totaling 75 yards and a touchdown.
Garden City rushed for 440 yards and did not complete a pass in a 49-0 victory over Liberal. Eight different Buffalo ball carriers combined for 440 yards on 40 carries. Zack Koesengphat led Garden City with 115 yards and two touchdowns while Emmanual Charite added 114 yards and a score on only two carries. Zane Burns add 90 yards and scored a touchdown on four carries. The Garden City defense held Liberal to 76 yards rushing on 20 attempts.
Malik O’Atis had a huge night as Shawnee Mission Northwest topped Lawrence, 41-24. O’Atis scored five total touchdowns and added a pair of interceptions on defense. He rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns and added 105 receiving yards and two more scores. The Cougars improve to 3-2 with the victory and send Lawrence to its second straight loss.
Topeka High outscored Topeka Highland Park, 70-42, on Friday night behind a big performance from Tylan Alejos. Alejos rushed for 400 yards and eight touchdowns in the victory. He scored four touchdowns in the first half as the Trojans led 36-28 at the break. Alejos rushed for three consecutive scores to build the Trojan lead to 57-34 after three quarters. Tre Richardson had another big night for the Scots with more than 300 all-purpose yards including a pair of touchdown passes, a rushing score, and two kick returns for touchdowns. Highland Park has now lost 61 consecutive games dating back to the 2014 season.
Gardner-Edgerton picked up its first win of the season by scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to top Olathe Northwest, 35-28. Lucas Anderson rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries to lead the Trailblazers. Jake McClure passed for 71 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Austin Buie. Carter Dewey and Kyle Oatman contributed 88 and 86 yards rushing, respectively, with Oatman scoring a touchdown.
Class 5A:
KC Sumner junior quarterback Camron Johnson threw for three touchdowns in a 44-0 win over KC Schlagle. Johnson completed 9 of 13 passes for 155 yards, throwing two TD passes for Rickey Brown II and another to Byron Keith. Sumner junior Antonio Harrison ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries.
Wichita Northwest junior LJ Phillips averaged more than 21 yards per carry as the Grizzlies ran over Haysville Campus 55-28. Phillips ran for 234 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries. Northwest senior quarterback Geremiah Moore completed 8 of 10 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Moore also ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns on seven attempts.
Salina Central exploded for nearly 550 yards of total offense -- including 320 on the ground -- in a 51-14 win over Arkansas City. Kenyon McMillan led the Mustangs with 168 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Salina Central quarterback Parker Kavanagh passed for more than 200 yards with two touchdowns. Ark City led 7-6 after the first quarter and had a chance to go up more when they elected to go for it on fourth down from the Mustangs’ 1-yard-line. Central’s Calvin Hemmer stopped Ark City quarterback Gabe Welch short, and the Mustangs responded with a 99-yard touchdown drive. Welch left the game with an injury with the Bulldogs leading 7-6.
Hays bounced back from a loss to Garden City by cruising to a 64-7 win over Abilene. Indians running back Roy Moroni ran for four touchdowns. Quarterback Jaren Kanak ran for one TD and threw for another. The Indians improved to 4-1. Abilene has now lost 21 consecutive games dating back to 2018.
Class 4A:
Junior Ty Leedy rushed for three touchdowns and caught another as Chanute topped Independence 44-0. Leedy rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries and caught a 24-yard TD pass. Chanute junior quarterback Eric Erbe completed 14 of 22 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns with the other going to junior Jeffrey Dean. The Blue Comets held Independence to about 104 yards of offense. Bulldogs quarterback Ryan Leiker completed 8 of 17 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions. Chanute is on a four-game winning streak after opening the season with a 20-12 loss at Towanda-Circle.
St. James Academy, last year’s Class 4A state champions, got its first win of the season by beating Missouri’s St. Pius X 33-13. Thunder senior wide receiver Tyler Claiborne caught six passes for 82 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the TD passes came from junior quarter quarterback Jackson House and one came from sophomore Ben Wheeler. Junior Wade Spencer led the defense with three sacks.
Atchison junior running back Jesse Greenly ran for 229 yards and five touchdowns as the Phoenix rolled over KC Turner 45-12. It was Greenly’s second game with more than 200 yards rushing. For the season, he has 884 yards and 17 touchdowns on only 87 carries. Defensively, junior Ethan Watson recorded two sacks, and senior Jake Rebant picked off a KC Turner pass.
Fort Scott used a 95-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Cade Gulager on the game’s final play to beat Labette County 19-15. The dramatic finish gave the Tigers their first win of the season and kept the Grizzlies from their first victory. Fort Scott snapped a five-game losing streak, while Labette County’s skid increased to six games.
Class 3A:
Southeast of Saline continued what has been a dominating season to date with a 45-0 shutout of Colby. The Trojans posted their third shutout of the season and have only allowed 12 points through five games. Luke Gebhardt passed for 226 yards and three touchdowns – all three to Chase Poague who caught nine for 162 yards. Three different Trojans added rushing touchdowns including Poague, Gebhardt, and Matthew Rodriguez.
Andrew Sohm tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Josh Sohm to propel Russell to a 12-7 victory at Scott City. The Broncos improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory.
Galena handed Caney Valley its first loss of the season on Friday night, 38-22. The Bulldogs rushed for nearly 300 yards against the Bullpup defense. Dawson Mooney’s rushing touchdown put Galena up 32-16. Meanwhile, the Galena defense turned away Caney Valley twice in the red zone with a turnover on downs and a fumble recovery. Caney played without injured quarterback Tanner Rose.
Sophomore quarterback Tra Mack passed for 208 yards and four touchdowns as Parsons rolled to a 42-7 win over Baxter Springs. Dion Sylvester caught four passes for 168 yards and three scores to lead the Vikings. Jessie Jones also caught a touchdown pass. Riley Baker also connected on a 56-yard touchdown pass to Jason Smart for Parsons. The Vikings improved to 3-2 with the victory.
Holcomb scored 52 points in the first half in rolling past Larned, 58-0. Senior quarterback Kaden Johnson completed 16 of 19 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Chris Palacios caught four passes for 80 yards, while Levi Knoll added five for 77 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Henson caught a pair of touchdown passes from Johnson and Damon Mesa added the other. Kolby Johnson led the Longhorn ground game with 49 yards and two scores. Holcomb improved to 4-1 on the season with a huge showdown at No. 3 Cheney this week.
Class 2A:
Cimarron improved to 4-1 after a 60-12 win versus Syracuse. The Bluejays led 36-0 after the first quarter and 24-0 at halftime. Senior Braxton Harrison completed two of three passes for 51 yards and a score. He rushed nine times for 119 yards and six touchdowns.
Belle Plaine picked up its first win this season with a 43-0 win versus Leon-Bluestem. Colby Barton threw four touchdowns in the first half.
Hoisington beat Minneapolis, 36-6, and won its fourth straight game. Hoisington led 20-0 after the first quarter and 34-0 at halftime. Hoisington had all of its yardage on the ground. The Cardinals rushed 46 times for 425 yards and five scores. Senior Legend Robinson went over 1,000 yards with 24 rushes for 327 yards and five scores.
Atchison County improved to 4-1 and 4-0 in the Northeast Kansas League with a 42-29 win over Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The Tigers rushed for 364 yards in the win led by senior Kieran Courter’s 150 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Bricen Lee added 128 yards rushing and passed for 114 yards and two touchdowns for Atchison County. Courter caught four passes for 71 yards. Maur Hill was led by senior quarterback Drew Caudle who passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns – two to Lansdon Taylor who had 109 receiving yards.
Jamari Harris rushed for 137 yards and scored four touchdowns as Hillsboro blanked Haven, 62-0. Trojan quarterback Matthew Potucek added 124 yards rushing and a score and passed for 164 yards. Potucek threw two touchdown passes to Frank Wichert and a third to Jacob Thiessen. Hillsboro improved to 4-1 with the win.
Lakin scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter to edge Southwestern Heights, 12-6. The Broncs have now won three consecutive games since their lone loss of the season at Stratford, Texas. Southwestern Heights dropped its fourth straight contest despite another strong outing from senior Memo Flores. Flores rushed for 186 yards on 33 carries and registered 23 tackles on defense.
Class 1A:
Conway Springs earned its fourth consecutive victory with a 55-0 win versus Wichita Independent. Izic Billups’ lone pass went for a 67-yard touchdown to Brayden Kunz. As well, Kunz had seven carries for 99 yards and two TDs. Billups also rushed 10 times for 90 yards and two TDs.
Elkhart held off Sublette, 22-14, to get its third win of the season. Wildcat quarterback Clayton Cole completed only four passes on the night, but three of those went for touchdowns to Emmit Espinosa who caught three balls for 103 yards. Miquel Hernandez continues his solid season for Sublette with 178 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Hernandez also passed for 65 yards. Hernandez has now rushed for 565 yards and four touchdowns in the Larks four games.
Wabaunsee picked remained in the hunt for the District 2 championship with a 28-12 win over Valley Heights. Charger quarterback Cade Oliver passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns – both of which went to Eli Oliver who caught five passes for 75 yards. Brayden Maseke added five catches for 85 yards for Wabaunsee. Cade Oliver and Aiden Boeckman each rushed for touchdowns for Wabaunsee. Boeckman led the Chargers with 112 rushing yards on only six attempts. Wabaunsee had 15 tackles for loss and five players with double-digit stops, including 17 from sophomore Tate Deever. The Chargers are a win away from their first winning season since 1997, per the Kansas Football History database.
Class 8-man I
Spearville improved to 3-2 with a 30-14 victory against rival Hodgeman County. The game was tied at eight after the first quarter and 14 after three quarters. Then, Spearville scored 16 points in the fourth quarter. Spearville ran the ball on 40 of 44 plays. Senior Kolten Bennett finished with 28 carries for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Easton Shenk delivered 10 carries for 88 yards and a score.
Hodgeman County had two players with more than 100 rushing yards, both seniors. Brayden Bergkamp delivered 23 carries for 102 yards and a score. Drew Dansel had 16 carries for 108 yards. The Longhorns ran 59 plays. Spearville has only lost to undefeated Bucklin and Meade. This series is known for long streaks. Hodgeman County won five in a row, then Spearville won four straight, then Hodgeman County took five in a row before the Lancers ended the streak.
Yates Center, one of Kansas’ biggest turnarounds, improved to 5-0 with a 62-0 victory against Cedar Vale-Dexter. The Wildcats scored 48 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second. Yates Center has already clinched its first winning season since 2013 and second since 1996. Senior Sean Hurst accounted for three touchdowns. Yates Center had three non-offensive touchdowns. Junior Jayston Rice returned a fumble for a score, Hurst had a pick-six and junior Cash Cummings brought back a punt for a TD. Yates Center plays Sedan (5-0) this week in a contest that will likely decide District 1.
Sedan is 5-0 with an average score of 60-10. The Blue Devils defeated Oswego, 60-8. Sedan held a 30-0 margin after the first quarter and 60-8 at halftime. Senior Brec Long continued his massive year. He completed six of eight passes for 120 yards and four touchdowns. Long rushed five times for 107 yards and three scores.
Class 8-man II
Minneola beat South Central, 46-26, behind a massive game from sophomore running back Eli Lang. Minneola was 0-6 against South Central since ’06. The game was tied at 14 at halftime. Then, Minneola had an 18-12 edge in the third quarter and 14-0 in the fourth. Minneola’s win set up a huge game with Bucklin (5-0) this week with District 7 implications. Lang delivered 43 carries for 394 yards and seven touchdowns. Lang also completed three of 10 passes for 46 yards and an interception. Senior Tucker Uhl paced South Central with 15 carries for 107 yards. Lang cleared 1,000 yards in four games – he has 96 carries for 1,005 yards and 15 scores. He has crossed 300 rushing yards in each of the last two contests. Minneola is 3-1.
Otis-Bison improved to 3-2 with a 72-22 win versus Tescott. The Cougars led 14-8 after the first quarter and 38-16 at halftime. Senior Kaden Foust completed 15 of 23 passes for 221 yards with six touchdowns. He also rushed 21 times for 146 yards.
Caldwell improved to 5-0 with a 51-14 win against Stafford. Junior Keiondre Smith continued his second straight massive season. He completed 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards with three scores against two interceptions. Smith delivered 25 rushing attempts for 197 yards and three scores. Brody Perkins had 10 carries for 60 yards and a score. Dawson Bristor finished with four carries for 95 yards and three scores. Smith picked off a pass.
Lakeside-Downs beat Southern Cloud, 50-0. Lakeside collectively rushed 24 times for 193 yards and four scores. The Knights completed eight of nine passes for 121 yards and two TDs. Senior Kylan Cunningham accounted for a pair of scores both rushing and passing.
Wheatland-Grinnell won its fourth straight game with a 65-12 win versus Sharon Springs-Wallace County. The Thunderhawks have scored at least 58 points in all four wins and have only lost to Axtell, currently ranked No. 1 in the classification. Senior Trey Vincent completed seven of 13 passes for 187 yards with three scores. Senior Isaac Mendez rushed 22 times for 137 yards and two TDs. Junior Jett Vincent caught four passes for 117 yards and a pair of scores. Senior Jake Willems had a big game with 15 tackles for Sharon Springs. Sophomore Tyler Korbe delivered 12 tackles, along with eight carries for 104 yards and two scores.
KCAA
Cair Paravel won the KCAA showdown with St. Mary’s Academy, 54-8. Both the Lions and Crusaders entered the game unbeaten. Cair Paravel quarterback Carter Brian completed 14 of 19 passes for 236 yards and six touchdowns on the night. Brian tossed three touchdown passes to 6-foot-6 receiver Noah Hastert who caught four passes for 68 yards. Jachin Bonura led Cair Paravel with five catches for 112 yards and a score.
6-Man
Cunningham scored 30 points in the second quarter to break open a 24-12 game and pull away for a 72-24 win over then No. 1 Ashland. Junior quarterback Trey DeWeese passed for 201 yards and threw five touchdown passes, while Luke McGuire added 60 yards passing and three touchdowns. Lane Halderson caught five passes for 126 yards and four scores, while McGuire caught five for 66 and two scores. Isaiah Reed and DeWeese also caught touchdown passes for the Wildcats who are No. 1 in the 6-Man poll this week.
Cheylin got back in the win column with a 45-0 shutout of Tribune-Greeley County. Logan McCarty passed for 221 yards and six touchdowns in the victory and added a rushing score. John Serrano and Harley McPherson each caught two touchdown passes from McCarty while Dylan and Brady Ketzner caught one each.
