Around the Classes - Week 3 recap

Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Blue Valley West used a balanced offense and a stingy defense to roll past defending 4A champion St. James Academy, 38-6. The Jaguars rushed for 246 yards on the night led by sophomore Sage Huffman’s 169 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Quarterback Gage Roach added a rushing touchdown but was effective through air in throwing for 199 yards and two scores. Jack Schneider caught five passes for 104 yards and a score for West. St. James Academy could only produce a pair of Malcolm Russell field goals on the night.

Garden City improved to 2-1 with a 49-0 shutout of Wichita West. The Buffaloes kept things on the ground in rushing for 278 yards as a team led by junior Colin Kleysteuber’s 91 yards on ten attempts. Kleysteuber and Emmanuel Charite each rushed for two touchdowns on the night, while Zack Koesengphet, Michael Varela, and Ryan Pilosof each rushed for one score.  

Olathe West rushed for 396 yards as a team in a 56-14 win over Shawnee Mission South. The Owl ground game was led by talented senior Anthony Favrow’s 224-yard, three-touchdown night on only 16 attempts. Quarterback Mason McGavran completed only five passes, but three went for touchdowns as part of his 110-yard night. Logan Hayes caught two touchdown passes with the third going to Justin Longhorn.  

Junction City forced overtime and then forced a turnover to edge Topeka Seaman, 23-16. Neither team score a touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter. Seaman led 9-3 when Junction City tied it but missed the PAT. Casen Stallbaumer turned in a long run after catch to put the Vikings up 16-9, but Junction City scored on a David Rowell run with under a minute to go to force OT. Rowell score in overtime to put the Blue Jays up 23-16. Seaman fumbled on the first play of its overtime possession given Junction City the victory.  


Class 5A:

Wichita Heights rushed for 394 yards on only 18 carries during a 69-12 win over Wichita North. The Falcons were led by junior running back John Randle Jr., who ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns on only six attempts. Randle, who is one of the state’s top recruits for 2023, ran for 31.2 yards per carry. His longest run was 74 yards. Junior quarterback DJ Dingle completed 5 of 6 passes for 100 yards and 3 TDs, and he ran for 79 yards and a touchdown on 4 carries. The Falcons improved to 2-1.

Senior quarterback Savyan Powell took over with his legs as KC Washington shut out KC Schlagle 22-0. Powell, who completed only 1 of 7 passes, ran for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts. Senior Quantre Moore led the Wildcat defense with 10 tackles, including two sacks. KC Washington is now 2-0.

Valley Center improved to 2-1 with a convincing 51-0 victory over Coffeyville. Hornet junior Nolan Bevan ran for 139 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Senior quarterback Brett Turner completed 8 of 14 passes for 88 yards. Turner connected on a pair of TD passes with juniors Brayden Boyd and Max Preheim. Boyd and senior Kade Wilson each recorded an interception.

Andover utilized a 97-yard kick return for a touchdown from Tayton Klein to hold off Salina Central 28-19. Moments after Salina Central connected on a TD pass from Parker Kavanagh to Kenyon McMillan to cut the lead to two, Klein gave the Trojans breathing room on the ensuing kickoff late in the third quarter. Max Middleton led the Andover rushing attack with 147 yards on 28 carries.


Class 4A:

Atchison junior Jesse Greenly ran for 196 yards and two touchdowns during a 38-16 win over KC Wyandotte. The Phoenix have now won two in a row after dropping their opener to Missouri school St. Joseph-Lafeyette. Atchison quarterback Trey Carter also rushed for two TDs and passed for another. Greenly has rushed for 530 yards through 3 games.

After giving up the game’s first score, El Dorado regrouped with a dominating 51-7 win over Labette County. The Wildcats easily recovered from the early 7-0 deficit as senior running back Jaydon Sundgren ran for 182 yards and four touchdowns. As a team El Dorado ran for 323 yards.

Eudora senior quarterback Gage Hayden passed for 2 TDs and rushed for three more during a 48-28 win over Bonner Springs. Hayden rushed for 136 yards on 20 carries and was extremely efficient in the passing game completing 2 of his 3 pass attempts for touchdowns. Senior Brayden Beerbower led the Cardinals with 217 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries. Junior Peyton Parks led Bonner Springs with 124 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.

Tonganoxie earned its first win of the season by defeating Paola 17-13. Paola took a 13-3 lead with about 23 seconds left in the first half, but the Chieftains' Wyatt Harris returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-10 at halftime. Senior Sam Kleidosty scored the game-winning touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Kleidosty finished with 84 rushing yards on 16 carries.  According to the Tonganoxie Mirror, it was the Chieftains’ first win over the Panthers since 1982.


Class 3A:

All of the scoring occurred in the first half as Smoky Valley remained unbeaten with a 14-8 win over Hillsboro. The Vikings controlled the game on the ground as Justice Autry rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts. Trystan Stambaugh added 78 yards and Smoky Valley’s other score and Kade Blanchat added 69 yards rushing. Hillsboro scored on a 53-yard run by quarterback Matthew Potucek.

Prairie View outscored Parsons 29-0 in the first half and cruised to a 38-14 victory. Bodi Isenhower rushed 19 times for 149 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Buffs’ ground game. Quarterback Damien Kline added 106 yards on the ground and passed for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Prairie View defense forced four Viking fumbles including three interceptions.  

Chapman rolled to a 56-21 win over Abilene in the oldest rivalry series west of the Mississippi river.  Senior Eli Riegel rushed 20 times for 288 yards and three touchdowns in the victory for the Irish. Tate Milton added 99 yards and three scores on 11 attempts, while Aiden Whitley chipped in 80 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Southeast of Saline continues to impress with a 72-6 win over Ellsworth on Friday. Junior quarterback Luke Gebhardt completed 8 of 9 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns – two to Chase Poague covering 104 yards. Matthew Rodriguez added 60 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the win. Eight different Trojans combined for 271 rushing yards.

Council Gove picked up its firs twin of the season with a 44-20 decision over West Franklin. The Braves scored in each quarter as freshman quarterback Ace Monihen passed for 244 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Monihen connected with Ethan Burton six times for 180 yards and three scores. West Franklin was led by quarterback Lance McCullough who passed for 216 yards and three scores.


Class 2A:

Norton scored 40 points in the first two weeks en route to a 1-1 start. Norton faced surprising 2-0 Russell at home at Travis Field in Week 3. Norton won 40-0. Norton’s Dean Clark scored the first touchdown late in the first quarter, and the Bluejays tallied three touchdowns in the second quarter, per Russell Radio. Norton held Russell to just 55 yards. Clark rushed 15 times for 110 yards. Norton is 8-0 against Russell since ’04, the only games between the teams in school history, per the Kansas Football History database.

Hoisington earned its second straight win with a 46-20 win against Halstead. Hoisington led 14-6 after the first quarter and 40-6 at halftime. Senior Wyatt Wikum finished two of three passing for 97 yards with two touchdowns. Senior Legend Robinson continued a big year in his first season as the feature back. He had seven carries for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Tony Moore had five touches, four for touchdowns. Moore had three carries for 144 yards and two TDs. Moore had two catches for 98 yards and two TDs. Hoisington finished with 524 yards of total offense. Robinson has cleared 150 yards in each game. He has 52 rushes for 521 yards and six touchdowns.  Halstead senior Conner Boyd had 15 rushes for 167 yards and two scores.

Wellsville beat Iola, 42-8. Wellsville led 6-0 after the first quarter, 28-0 at halftime and 42-0 after three quarters. Junior Dylan McCarty completed 10 of 17 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions. Junior Nash Money had 10 carries for 41 yards. Overall, Wellsville rushed 32 times for 129 yards and two scores. Wellsville lost, 20-6, to Iola last year. Wellsville is 7-1 in the last eight meetings versus Iola.

Lakin beat Goodland, 22-14, and improved to 2-1 overall, 2-0 against Kansas teams. Since the start of 2020, Lakin is 6-6 overall, 6-4 versus Kansas teams. Lakin had lost, 23-17, to Goodland in Week 3 last season. This year, running back Allen Martinez was the team’s player of the game. Lakin led 7-0 after the first quarter and the game was tied 14-14 at halftime. Martinez delivered 15 times for 71 yards and a touchdown. Senior Servando Gonzales delivered 17 carries for 65 yards and a TD.


Class 1A:

Troy held off Wabaunsee, 10-6. Troy displayed an impressive defense. The Trojans limited Wabaunsee senior standout quarterback Cade Oliver to 4 of 12 passing for 24 passing. The game was scoreless after the first quarter, and Troy led 10-0 at halftime. Wabaunsee tallied six points in the third quarter. Overall, Troy’s defense limited Wabaunsee to 20 carries for zero yards. Wabaunsee won, 37-13, last year.

Conway Springs beat Elkhart, 50-0. The Cardinals delivered 320 total yards with 280 of those coming on the ground.


Class 8-man I

West Elk coach Chris Haag picked up career win No. 100 in his 21st year with the Patriots. West Elk improved to 3-0 heading into its key game with Sedan this week. The Patriots beat Flinthills, 34-14. West Elk led 8-0 after the first quarter and 20-14 at halftime. Freshman Creyo Koop continued his fine start with 24 carries for 143 yards and three TDs. Senior quarterback Garrett Toon passed for 36 yards and two scores and passed for 51 yards. Senior Kendall Pinkerton delivered 16 carries for 130 yards and a score. WE is off to its best start since a 10-1 season in 2017. The Patriots have 10-1 seasons in ’15 and ’17, the most wins in school annals, per the Kansas Football History database. West Elk has at least nine wins in four of the previous eight seasons.

Sedan is 3-0 and has outscored teams, 168-22. Senior quarterback Brec Long continued his final year after he transferred over from Caney Valley. Sedan beat Central Burden, 58-8. Long completed six of 10 passes for 215 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He rushed five times for 102 yards and four scores. Senior Dameion Hatten has four catches for 133 yards and two scores. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Hatten has 10 catches for 311 yards and eight touchdowns.

Oswego picked up its first on-field win of the season. Oswego won by forfeit against rival Chetopa in Week 1. In Week 2, Oswego lost, 68-66, to St. Paul. Last week, Oswego beat Altoona-Midway, 49-0, in a game called at halftime. Oswego scored 21 points in the first quarter. Senior Jace Landes delivered eight carries for 168 yards and two TDs. Junior Levi George completed four of five passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns.

Kinsley improved to 2-1 with a 64-14 win versus South Haven. Kinsley led 20-0 after the first quarter. Peyton Schmidt completed seven of 12 passes for 216 yards and three TDs. Schmidt had 11 carries for 73 yards and two TDs. Levi Taylor had four catches for 109 yards and two scores. Kinsley ran 34 plays for 368 yards.


Class 8-man II

Caldwell came back from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Norwich, 36-34. It marked Caldwell’s second 36-34 victory in the last five games after a playoff win versus Central Plains by the same score. Keiondre Smith scored the game-winning touchdown with under five minutes to play, and Jackson Risley ran in the game-winning two-point conversion. Smith accounted for 320 yards and five touchdowns. Norwich led 14-0 after the first quarter.

Sylvan-Lucas defeated Otis-Bison, 42-16. The Mustangs led 20-16 at halftime before 22 unanswered points. The Mustangs rushed for nearly 400 yards. Lane Homewood and Geriun Boor both cleared 100 rushing yards.

Wheatland-Grinnell defeated Stockton, 63-8, and won its second straight game. Senior Trey Vincent completed seven of eight passes for 77 yards with two touchdowns. Senior Isaac Mendez had 10 carries for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Trey Vincent rushed for a touchdown, and his brother, Jett, caught two TDs. Jett also picked off a pass, his first of the season and 23rd of his career. Wheatland-Grinnell plays host to Quinter in the Gove County rivalry and a big district game this week.

Bucklin beat Hodgeman County, 50-48, its first win versus the Longhorns since ’04. Bucklin ran 71 plays, 20 more than Hodgeman County. Senior Nathan Bowman rushed seven for 16 passes for 113 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Bowman also rushed 24 times for 140 yards and three TDs. Senior Scott Price had 21 carries for 74 yards and two scores. HC ran for 394 yards. Senior 6-foot-3 back Brayden Bergkamp had 24 carries for 234 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Drew Dansel delivered 20 carries for 157 yards and a TD.


6-Man

Ashland beat defending champion Cheylin 42-32 in a battle of No. 1 versus No. 2 in the 6-Man rankings. The Blue Jays snapped the Cougars’ 11-game win streak. Ashland held the Cougars to 67 yards rushing and forcing a pair of turnovers. Cheylin sophomore quarterback Logan McCarty passed for 395 yards and five touchdowns on the day, including two to freshman Harley McPherson.

Kayden Martinez rushed for 265 yards and five touchdowns as Natoma handled Weskan, 67-19 on Friday to remain unbeaten.
