Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Wichita East forced five turnovers and led 70-0 at halftime in rolling past Wichita Southeast 84-6. The Blue Aces had 324 yards of total offense, while holding Southeast to 54 yards and five first downs. Southeast broke the drought in the second half with a touchdown, but failed on the two-point conversion.

Gardner-Edgerton bounced back from their 28-7 loss to Olathe North with an 50-0 shutout of Shawnee Mission North. The Trailblazers had 376 yards, 287 of them through the air. SM North was held to 111 yards and gave up two turnovers. Carter Dewey and Tyler Butash both scored two rushing touchdowns apiece. Davonte Pritchard added a pick six.

Wichita West gained their third straight victory with a 53-2 decision over Wichita North on Friday. Pioneer quarterback Malachi Rogers went 9 of 14 passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns on one interception. Rogers also ran for 44 yards and three touchdowns as well. North was held to -17 yards of offense as Wichita West had ten tackles for loss. Leon Dixon and Jerome Ragin both had three tackles for loss.


Class 5A:

Hutchinson turned a big second half into a dominating 42-17 victory over Salina South. The Cougars led 17-14 at halftime, but Hutch would score on four consecutive drives after an early second-half turnover. Noah Khokhar had three touchdowns in the second half for the Salthawks. Weston Fries would connect with Brandt Cox and Tejon McDaniel in the first half for Salina South.

Liberal scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Great Bend 22-14. Great Bend led 14-8 off of a Gavin Haberman run and a Paco Hernandez pass from Joseph Moeder. Liberal scored in the first quarter from a Trey Kerr pass to Malcolm Wiltshire. Liberal would strike in the fourth quarter with touchdown passes from Kerr to Izzy Garcia-Rotolo in the fourth quarter to seal a Liberal victory.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel scored their second straight shutout with a 56-0 victory over Garden City. Cale Curtis, Doug Bates, Brandon Burr, and Kai Kunz scored in the first half to build a 34-0 lead after the first half. The Crusader defense held Garden City to 276 yards of offense and the Buffaloes went 0-9 on third down.

Andover had to hold off a valiant Valley Center rally to win 35-27. Andover led 21-0, but had their lead cut to 21-13 after two touchdown passes from Preston Looney. Andover would tack on two more touchdowns before Braxton Mooney would take a kickoff return 94 yards to the house. Preston Looney would throw another touchdown pass, but time would run out on the Hornets comeback bid.

 

Class 4A:

Senior quarterback Isaac Stanton passed for 263 yards and three touchdowns as Basehor-Linwood topped Atchison 42-26. The Bobcats clung to a 22-20 lead at halftime but then outscored Atchison 20-0 in the third quarter to improve to 3-3 on the season. Senior Ethan Huber was Stanton’s top target with 10 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. Junior Zack Sisemore led the Bobcats’ rushing attack with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Senior Xavier Cushinberry and sophomore Jesse Greenly led the Atchison rushing attack with 124 and 115 yards, respectively.

Labette County earned its first win of the season and snapped a nine-game losing streak by beating Coffeyville 16-13. Coffeyville took a 13-6 lead with 3:42 left in the first half when Brady White scored on a 4-yard run. The Grizzlies fired back with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Griffin Eaton to Tray Vinson with 20 seconds left in the half and followed with the two-point conversion to take a 14-13 lead. The Grizzlies defense recorded a safety late in the third quarter to push the lead to three points. Coffeyville has lost four straight after opening the season with a win at Augusta.

Eudora earned a 29-3 win over a depleted Ottawa team that fielded only 18 players. The Cardinal offense rushed for 263 yards in the win. The Cyclones were short on players after their junior varsity team was placed on quarantine earlier in the week.

Malachi Vann scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Fort Scott held off Chanute 20-14. The win moved the Tigers to 4-0 on the season. Chanute had previously tied the game at 14 on the first play of the fourth quarter. Jordan Johnson and Luke Bradbury also scored TDs for Fort Scott. Chanute’s touchdowns came on an 81-yard kick return to open the second half by sophomore Ty Leedy and a 22-yard run by senior Garrett Almond.

Rose Hill improved to 3-3 and won its third game in a row by defeating Mulvane 46-6. Rockets quarterback Bryson Evans threw four TD passes, connecting with Bryce Bischler twice and Spencer Nolan and Trevor Kiser once each. Rose Hill has already matched last season’s win total and will try to win more than three games in a season for the first time since 2013.

Andover Central overcame five turnovers to beat Salina Central 27-7. The Jaguars were able to do so by forcing Salina Central to commit five turnovers of its own. Andover Central senior Jack Bell intercepted three passes and junior Isaac Sheeran recovered two fumbles. Andrew Central senior quarterback Chase White completed 15 of 22 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown but threw four interceptions. The Jaguars improved to 4-1.


Class 3A:

Lakin Farmer put together a historical performance when his Halstead Dragons needed it. Farmer rushed for 533 yards and six touchdowns on 35 carries as the Dragons outlasted Hesston 48-34. Halstead and Hesston both entered the contest winless in District 7 and trying to chase frontrunners Andale, Wichita Collegiate, and Clearwater.

Columbus shut out Galena 23-0 in the second half to claim a key district victory, 36-20, in a battle of unbeaten teams. Galena led 20-13 at halftime thanks to a pair of Brett Sarwinski touchdown passes. Columbus would take the lead in the third quarter on a Cole Minor pick-six and extend their lead later when Brett Hamilton tossed a touchdown pass to Lynn Shallenburger put the Titans up 29-20. Gabe Martin led the Titan offense with 113 yards and a late touchdown that put the game out of reach.  

Riley County scored 41 points in the first quarter and all 61 in the first half of Friday’s 61-0 rout of Council Grove. Senior Conner Holle passed for 205 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Nic Allen led the ground game with 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns on ten carries. Trey Harmison and Avery Holle each caught a pair of touchdown passes with Harmison pulling in a team-high 98 yards on three catches.

Burlington scored 28 points in the second quarter to pull away from Girard in a 52-34 district victory. The Wildcats were led by senior Braden Sloyer’s 172 yards rushing including five touchdowns. Gavin Price also added a touchdown rushing for the Wildcats.

Hugoton forced four Pratt turnovers and held off the Greenbacks, 22-16, to earn a key victory in District 8. The Ealges led 16-0 at halftime before adding a touchdown in the third quarter. Pratt was led by Devon Weber’s 143 rushing yards on the night.

Marysville built a 12-0 first-quarter lead and held on to defeat Concordia, 30-24. Junior Patrick Smith rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldog offense. Ayden Price passed for 83 yards and three scores on the night, including two to sophomore Peyton Smith. Wyatt Trost led Concordia with 158 rushing yards on 28 attempts.

                                                          

Class 2A:

Cimarron beat Lakin, 45-12. Cimarron led 28-6 at halftime and 45-6. Junior Braxton Harrison completed 4 of 7 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Junior Mason Eskam had 27 carries for 133 yards and four TDs. Harrison also intercepted a pass and blocked a punt. Cimarron again played with senior Tate Seabolt, who has rushed for 159 yards in four games. Harrison is up to 660 passing, 506 rushing and 13 TDs accounted for.Both of Lakin’s TDs came off Cimarron’s miscues. Dawson Aller forced a fumble that was recovered by Tanner Hattabaugh. That led to a one-yard run. Late, Lakin blocked a punt and fell on it in the end zone. Cimarron has won four straight district titles and will play at Thomas More Prep at Lewis Field Stadium for likely the district title this week.

Republic County beat St. Marys, 40-0, and won its Homecoming game for the first time since 2003, according to RCHS broadcaster Jesy Strnad. Republic County improved to 4-2 and has doubled its win total from last year. The Buffs played without standout Jared Baxa, one of the state’s leading rushers through the first several weeks. Senior Kaleb Talkington rushed 13 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Garrett Siemsen delivered 13 rushes for 100 yards and a TD. Baxa has rushed 92 times for 888 yards and six touchdowns with four 100-yard rushing yard games.

Phillipsburg beat Minneapolis, 20-15. The Panthers have won two in a row and three of its last four. Ty Sides had touchdown runs of 45 and 65 yards.

St. Mary’s Colgan scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions in a 52-14 rout over Neodesha last Thursday night. Junior quarterback Jake Wright completed 12 of 16 passes for 187 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Gianni Piccini caught five passes for 100 yards and a score, while tight end Kannon Keller hauled in the other touchdown reception. The Panther ground game contributed 290 yards and five rushing scores. Domenico Bevilacqua rushed for 150 yards and three scores and Blaise Dawson added 112 yards and two scores on nine carries. The Bluestreaks were led by senior Phoenix Carpenter’s 123 rushing yards including a touchdown.

Ellis rushed for more than 300 yards as part of a 60-14 win over Syracuse. The Railroaders were led by junior Mason Gottschalk’s 212 yards and two scores. Senior quarterback Tegan Cain added three rushing score and passed for two more touchdowns. Syracuse freshman quarterback Jay Gould passed for 178 yards and a score.


Class 1A:

Sedgwick missed seven of 22 starters and beat Whitewater-Remington, 42-21, to move to 6-0. Sedgwick and Olpe are the only 6-0 teams left in 1A. Lance Hoffsommer completed 15 of 26 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns. He also delivered 15 carries for 127 yards and two scores. Henry Burns finished with 28 tackles, along with five catches for 145 yards and three scores.

Elkhart beat Stanton County, 14-10. Sophomore quarterback Kage Ralstin threw a 43-yard touchdown pass for his only completion. Junior Emmitt Espinoza had a rushing score. Senior Tyler Reeves delivered a team-high seven tackles, including a TFL.

Wabaunsee led 20-8 after the first quarter, but Jefferson County North won 38-20. Wabaunsee quarterback Cade Oliver returned to complete 17 of 27 passes for 297 yards with a touchdown. In five games, Oliver has 1,217 passing yards with a 10/3 TD/INT ratio.

Sacred Heart won its second straight game with a 20-12 victory versus Wichita Independent. Sacred Heart running back Jared McCartney rushed for a one-yard touchdown. Freshman Michael Matteucci had a 55-yard receiving score. Mason Richards also delivered a 44-yard TD run.

 

Class 8-man I

Ness City’s strong defense returned with a 30-6 road win versus Hodgeman County. Ness City scored the game’s first 30 points with eight in the first, eight in the second and 14 in the third. Hodgeman ran 69 plays for 117 yards, and Ness City posted 55 plays for 237 yards. Edwin Rodriguez had a three-yard scoring run, and Jose Guzman threw a 3-yard pass to Jackson Seib. Then, Jose Guzman threw touchdown passes of three and 51 yards to Danny Guzman. Overall, Edwin Rodriguez rushed 21 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. Taylor Cable delivered seven tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks.

Hoxie won its fourth straight game and improved to 4-1 with a 24-0 home win versus Hill City. The game was scoreless after the first quarter, and Hoxie led 2-0 at halftime, and 16-0 after three. Junior Ashton Dowell completed 12 of 21 passes for 198 yards and two scores against one interception. Senior Aidan Baalman collected five catches for 104 yards and a score. Sophomore Derek Johnson led with 10 tackles, and senior Harlan Obioha, with Division I offers in football and basketball, had seven tackles, a game-best five for loss.

La Crosse defeated Kinsley, 74-26, in a game that was 8-8 after the first quarter. However, the Leopards outscored Kinsley, 24-0, in the second quarter to pull ahead. A week after he set the school record with seven touchdowns, junior running back Colby Stull delivered 12 carries for 249 yards and five TDs. Freshman Gage Burk had 12 rushes for 163 yards and three scores. Both of sophomore quarterback Bryce Conner’s completions went for touchdowns. Stull had 82 carries for 802 yards and 17 TDs. Isaac Bowman finished 11 of 25 passing for 195 yards and three touchdowns for Kinsley. Bowman has completed 58 of 112 passes for 1,098 yards with a 16/4 TD/INT ratio this season.

Kiowa County scored in each quarter and steadily pulled away for a 53-34 upset of previously-unbeaten Pratt-Skyline. The Mavericks picked up their second win of the season after entering this contest at 1-4. All five of Kiowa County quarterback Luke Ballard’s pass completions went for touchdowns and totaled 163 yards. Ballard threw two touchdowns each to Caydan Pore and Brady Deterding and another to Jordan Smith. James Black led the Maverick’s ground game with 97 rush yards and two scores. Jesus Casas led Skyline with 145 yards rushing and two scores. Freshman Brayden Berens rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown and also threw a touchdown pass for the Thunderbirds, but was also intercepted two times.


Class 8-man II

Wheatland-Grinnell beat depleted Logan-Palco, 52-16, and moved to 5-1 with its fifth straight victory. Quarterback Trey Vincent earned the team’s offensive player of the game award. Ryan Heier picked up the defensive honor, and Treven Humphries earned special teams. Wheatland-Grinnell will face No. 1 St. Francis for likely the district title this week. Vincent completed 14 of 22 for 262 yards and five touchdowns versus zero interceptions. Sophomore Jett Vincent recorded six catches for 127 yards and three scores.  Humphries finished with 209 all-purpose yards. Three players had at least 20 tackles, led by 30 stops, four for loss, from Heier. Jett Vincent picked off two passes and has eight for the season and 21 in his career. Logan-Palco standout running back Micah Thompson is out for the year with injury.

Colony-Crest improved to 6-0 with a 62-12 home victory versus Chetopa and has nearly locked up the District 1 title. Crest leads Division II with 350 points, 26 ahead of runner-up Stafford. Victoria, Crest and Lebo are the only 6-0 teams in Division II. Senior quarterback Jacquez Coleman continued his fine year with 5 of 5 passing for 120 yards and three TDs. He rushed five times for 118 yards and two TDs. Senior Stratton McGhee had five carries for 97 yards and two scores. Overall, Crest rushed 19 times for 312 yards and five TDs.

Lakeside-Downs trailed 14-12 after the first quarter but rallied to beat Pike Valley, 82-50. Junior Kylan Cunningham completed 15 of 21 passes for 252 yards with five touchdowns. He also rushed 15 times for 113 yards and five scores. Lakeside is 4-2 overall, 4-1 in District 4.

Peabody-Burns beat Caldwell, 38-18, and gave the Bluejays its second straight defeat. Caldwell had opened 4-0. Peabody-Burns led 22-6 at halftime. Caldwell played without both of its standout backs, Keiondre Smith and Jude Stow. Warrior running back Noal Reynolds rushed 13 times for 117 yards and a score. Peabody-Burns is 3-3, 3-1 in its last four games. The Warriors were 2-7 last year.

South Barber moved to 4-2 and beat Otis-Bison, 68-18. Junior Gatlin Jewell completed 5 of 9 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for 221 yards and four scores. Senior Emilio Perez had 13 carries for 153 yards and two TDs. Junior Caden Rathgeber caught one pass, for 62 yards. Sophomore Brent Duncan delivered a pair of sacks. South Barber won its fourth straight game after an 0-2 start with a pair of losses by a combined six points. The Chieftains average 50 points a game and are fourth in Division II in scoring offense.

Osborne held on to beat Thunder Ridge, 18-12, in a key District 4 matchup. Osborne scored late, and then held the Longhorns in the red zone as time expired. Thunder Ridge sophomore quarterback Dylan Bice completed nine of 20 passes for 96 yards with zero touchdowns against three interceptions. He rushed 22 times for 118 yards. Sophomore Connor Schurr had 16 carries for 111 yards and a TD. This marked the second straight year Osborne beat Thunder Ridge by six points or fewer.
