Derby remains in quarantine and missed a second consecutive game. The Panthers are scheduled to return to action this week at Haysville Campus – a team that has also missed the past two weeks due to quarantine.

Olathe North remains in the No. 3 spot after an impressive 28-7 win at Gardner-Edgerton. The Eagles are scheduled to host Shawnee Mission East this week before a showdown with No. 1 Lawrence on October 16th.

Junction City stays put at No. 4 this week. The Blue Jays routed Topeka West, 63-13, on Thursday night and will take on Topeka High this week.

Finally, Shawnee Mission Northwest remains at No. 5 this week despite their 35-34 loss at Class 5A No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas. The Cougars led 28-7 at halftime, then fell behind 35-28 late. Shawnee Mission Northwest rallied for a late touchdown, but their two-point conversion attempt was incomplete.

The Cougars remain at No. 5 this week only one vote ahead of Blue Valley Northwest.

Class 5A

We have some change at the top of this week’s Class 5A poll.

St. Thomas Aquinas assumes the top spot this week by barely edging out No. 2 Wichita Northwest. The voting has been extremely close among the Saints, Grizzlies, and No. 3 Mill Valley for the past few weeks. Aquinas picked up a 35-34 win over Class 6A No. 5 Shawnee Mission Northwest on Friday.

Meanwhile, Wichita Northwest blasted Wichita North, 92-0. Third-ranked Mill Valley rolled to a 52-0 win over Lawrence Free State.

Maize switches spots with Bishop Carroll in this week’s poll. The Eagles routed Salina South, 58-13, ahead of this week’s showdown with rival Maize South.

Meanwhile, Bishop Carroll lost on the road at Class 6A No. 1 Lawrence, 37-28 on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles’ two losses have come to the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Class 6A.

Several teams sit just outside the top five including, De Soto, Topeka Seaman, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Maize South, Goddard, Hays, and Hutchinson.

Class 4A

Bishop Miege picked up its first victory of the season with a 38-28 decision over last week’s No. 5 St. James Academy. Quarterback Timothy Dorsey and receiver Mack Moeller continue to be one of the top passing combinations in the state at any level. Dorsey passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns, including 210 yards and three scores to Moeller. St. James Academy falls out of this week’s poll after the loss.

Second-ranked Paola cruised to a 48-7 win over Wamego. The Panthers will host KC Piper this week. Piper will be coming off a 29-0 loss to No. 3 Tonganoxie on Saturday. The game was moved from Friday until Saturday amid some concern from the Wyandotte County Health Department. Tonganoxie is searching for a game this week given their originally scheduled opponent, Spring Hill, had to cancel due to COVID-related issues.

McPherson remains at No. 4 this week despite a 41-35 loss against a solid De Soto team. The Bullpups fell behind by 20 points in the second half before rallying to pull close late. McPherson gets a tough road test this week at Buhler.

Lansing enters the poll at No. 5 this week. The Lions did not play due to a cancellation by their scheduled opponent Leavenworth. Lansing is 3-1 and will travel to Pittsburg this week.

Class 3A

In Class 3A, top-ranked Andale rolled to its 18th consecutive victory 66-7 over Hesston. The Indians will be heavily favored this week at Wichita Trinity before closing out the regular season with district games against Clearwater (5-0) and Wichita Collegiate (5-0).

Second-ranked Perry-Lecompton had to scramble to find an opponent after district-opponent Baldwin went into quarantine. The Kaws traveled to Winfield and defeated the Class 4A Vikings, 41-13. Perry-Lecompton returns to district play this week against Osawatomie.

Topeka Hayden is also apart of District 3 with Perry-Lecompton. The third-ranked Wildcats cruised past Osawatomie, 43-6, on Friday and will host Santa Fe Trial this week.

Hoisington picked up a solid 27-6 win at Minneapolis on Friday. The Cardinals are the lone unbeaten team in District 8 as the other five teams have at least one district loss with last year’s state runner-up Norton sitting at 0-2.

Fourth-ranked Hutchinson Trinity Catholic joins Hoisington as the only two unbeaten teams on the western half of Class 2A. The Celtics improved to 5-0 with a 41-0 win over Marion – their third consecutive shutout.

Class 8M-I

Top-ranked Canton-Galva won its showdown with No. 5 Little River, 56-38. The Eagles pulled away in the second half to extend their win streak to 18 consecutive games. Despite the loss, Little River (3-2) secured just enough votes to stay in the poll at No. 5 this week. The Redskins’ two losses have come to top-ranked Canton-Galva and fourth-ranked Clifton-Clyde.

Speaking of Clifton-Clyde, the Eagles stay in the No. 4 spot this week after a 46-0 shutout of Valley Falls. Clifton-Clyde will travel to Doniphan West this week.

Third-ranked Madison rolled to a 53-8 win at Oxford. Madison will take on Chase County this week in a game that should decide the top two spots in District 2.

Second-ranked Leoti-Wichita County is part of arguably the toughest district in eight-man football. District 7’s six member schools have combined for an overall record of 21-6 this season. Still, the Indians won their second straight district game by the same 58-8 score. Wichita County will travel to Meade this week.

Class 8M-II

The top four teams in the Eight-Man, Division II poll remained the same this week. The lone change came in the No. 5 spot as the Frankfort Wildcats take over the final poll position by virtue of their 36-14 victory over previously fifth-ranked Axtell. Frankfort will travel to No. 2 Hanover this week in another Twin Valley League showdown that will likely decide the District 3 champion. Hanover posted a 54-6 blowout of defending state champion Osborne last week in a non-district contest.

Third-ranked Victoria picked up a key win in District 5 by doubling-up Central Plains, 28-14, in Claflin. The Knights now join Wilson at 3-0 in district play. The Knights and Dragons will meet this week in Victoria.
