Collegiate rides defense to spoil Hesston’s Homecoming, 31-10

It took nearly the entire first half until points were scored at Hesston.

As time expired in the first half, Jack Duarte drilled a 50-yard field goal providing the lone scoring highlight of the first half, as Collegiate went to the locker room leading, 3-0.

The Spartans would hold Hesston to a three-and-out on their first drive of the second half, and Collegiate’s Wesley Fair would score the first of his four touchdowns on the night from four yards out.

Trailing 10-0, Hesston responded with a textbook 75-yard Statue of Liberty play to grab momentum. But Collegiate would force a Swather field goal, and retain a 10-3 lead.

Both teams would trade turnovers as an errant snap would get past Fair with Hesston’s Cooper McCormick recovering. The Swathers were unable to convert as Collegiate’s Jacob Chugg would intercept a tipped pass in the red zone.

A couple of possession later, Fair would haul in another score on fourth down, racing down the Collegiate sideline for another TD with seven minutes to go in the game. Collegiate would later score again off of one play, with Wesley Fair passing to Michael Fair for another score.

Hesston would get on the board with Ryan Eilert connecting with Brayden Schilling for the Swathers only touchdown of the night.

The Spartans then took three minutes off the clock culminating in a Wesley Fair touchdown to make it a three-score game with three minutes left.

Both Fair and Collegiate coach Troy Black attributed the second half scoring surge to coaching and better execution.

“We just stopped making little mistakes, and we came together as a team, and we have great coaches. It just all came together and we all got on a roll.” Fair commented on the second half differences.

“We just settled down and executed. We didn’t execute very well offensively. We called the same plays second half, we just executed better,” Black said.

Collegiate is 4-0 for the second consecutive season and will take on Wichita Trinity next week. Collegiate and Andale are favorites to win the 3A District 7 title, with that showdown taking place on the regular season finale at Collegiate.
