Garden City wins the Hatchet, 14-8

After a scoreless first half, Garden City defeated Western Athletic Conference rival Dodge City, 14-8 to win the Hatchet Game, one of the state’s most prestigious rivalries.

Alden Knedler’s three-yard touchdown run provided the only points for Dodge City.

Dodge City had won the last two in the series by scores of 27-7 and 17-7. This is the lowest point total by a winning team since Dodge City won 14-6 in the ’09 season finale. This marked the 83rd annual Hatchet contest.

According to Dodge City broadcaster Sean Boston, this was the earliest the rivalry was played in a season since 1964. The teams have played every year since ’07. Both teams stand at 1-2, though Garden City was very competitive in a 21-7 road loss to Manhattan, then ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, in the season opener.

Garden City lost 21-20 to Hutchinson, a surprise 3-0 squad, in Week 2. The win also ended a six-game losing streak for the Buffs, which dated back to Week 5 of last year.

Hutchinson slips by Maize South

After two weeks of just three ranked teams losing to non-ranked teams, Week 3 brought several ranked teams losing to non-ranked/out of state foes. That included Mill Valley, No. 1 in 5A, which lost to Arkansas powerhouse Bentonville, and depleted Blue Valley, ranked third in 6A. Blue Valley fell to Blue Valley Northwest in its season opener Thursday.

Class 5A Hutchinson, though, delivered arguably the state’s biggest upset with its second straight one-point victory. Part of the Kansas’ trend of much more one-point victories in the first three weeks of 2020 compared to ’19, the Salthawks beat Garden City (21-20) in Week 2, and Maize South, 34-33, on Friday.

Hutchinson rode a huge night from Alec McCaun in upsetting Maize South, 34-33. The Mavericks were ranked No. 5 in Class 5A and had not lost in the regular season since Week 3 of 2018. Additionally, Maize South, long known for defense, allowed its most points since a 35-21 season-opening loss to Wichita Heights in ’18.

The Salthawks rushed for 375 yards on the night led by McCaun’s 292 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries.

Colin Shields passed for 211 yards and three scores to lead Maize South. The Mavericks were led on the ground by Hunter Niemann’s 107 yards and two touchdowns.

CLASS 4A

No. 2 Paola tops No. 3 Tonganoxie with late score

Second-ranked Paola topped third-ranked Tonganoxie, 35-28, in a tremendous high school football game between two contenders in Class 4A.

Garrett Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run with :55 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as Paola regained the lead after Tonganoxie scored two consecutive times in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

The Chieftains got one last attempt with under a minute to go, but quarterback Gabe Bailey’s pass was intercepted by the Panthers. Tonganoxie played without starting quarterback Blake Poje for a second consecutive week.

The Chieftains did have senior running back Tyler Bowden, who dazzled with his quickness and power for much of the night. Bowden took the handoff on the game’s first play from scrimmage and raced 60 yards for a touchdown to put Tonganoxie up 7-0.

Paola answered as Williams hit Bo Robinson on a fourth-down touchdown pass to tie the score. The Panther defense then came up big as Jack Earlywine picked off Bailey and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

Bailey responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Sam Kleidosty to pull the Chieftains even at 14-14.

Williams answered again for Paola with a 76-yard scoring run to put the Panthers up 21-14 at halftime.

Paola opened the second half with a 7-minute drive that resulted in Williams scoring over left tackle on 4th-and-goal to give the Panthers a 28-14 lead.

Bowden then went to work.

The senior, who was an 6A all-state selection at Lawrence Free State last year, broke a 7-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to cut the Paola lead to 28-21.

Tonganoxie then successfully covered a short kick, and Bowden again found the end zone to tie the game with 9:37 remaining. But the Chieftains wouldn’t get the ball back until the final minute as Paola went on another long, time-consuming drive that resulted in Williams’ game-winning TD plunge.

Bowden finished with 35 carries for 239 yards and three touchdowns to push his season total to 758 yards and 10 scores.
