Around the Classes: Week 7 Recap

Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Blue Valley West built a 24-3 halftime lead in defeating Blue Valley Southwest 44-10 last Thursday night. Senior quarterback Greg Riddle passed for 195 yards and two touchdowns – one to Scott Riddle and another to Omar Stanley. Scott Riddle caught nine passes for 95 yards. Greg Riddle also rushed for 96 yards and a score, while Riley Cummings added 89 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Manhattan scored 35 points in the first half in routing Topeka West, 62-0. B.J. Young and Mason Reid each rushed for two touchdowns in the game and had 80 and 79 yards, respectively. Dayne Aschenbrenner passed for 70 yards and a score. Young pushed his season total to 897 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Aschenbrenner has rushed for 742 yards and 14 scores. Aschenbrenner has also passed for 588 yards and four touchdowns.

Blue Valley Northwest scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to top Blue Valley North, 33-28. Sophomore quarterback Mikey Pauley passed for 269 yards and two touchdowns on the night, and added three rushing scores. Edward Thomas II led the Huskies with 98 yards on the ground. Evan Ranallo had five catches for 98 yards and two scores for the Huskies.

Shawnee Mission West stopped a four-game losing streak with a 35-0 shutout of Shawnee Mission North. Junior quarterback Weston Moore passed for 124 yards including touchdown passes to Wesley Clark and Luke Jones. Jones and Jaylen Rucker each rushed for touchdowns as well for the Vikings.


Class 5A:

Maize South defeated Goddard, 7-0, in a defensive battle that kept the Mavericks undefeated on the season. Maize South’s defense pitched a shutout for the second consecutive week and made a first-half touchdown from Justice Morris stand up. The Mavericks swept the city of Goddard in consecutive weeks in beating Eisenhower 10-0 the week prior.

Mill Valley scored 24 consecutive points on Friday in rallying past Blue Valley, 24-20.The Jaguars trailed 13-0 in the second quarter before getting on the board with a Chris Tennant field goal and a touchdown pass from Cooper Marsh to Ty Reishus. Blue Valley led 13-10 at halftime before Marsh tossed touchdown passes to Jacob Hartman and Zach Mills to give the Jaguars a 24-13 lead. Chase Jans would later add a touchdown for the Tigers to pull within the final margin. Marsh passed for 200 yards and three scores, while Quin Wittenauer led Mill Valley with more than 150 yards rushing, while Marsh added 136 more yards on the ground. Jans rushed for 157 yards and two scores for Blue Valley.

KC Washington won the Kansas City-Atchison League outright with a 42-6 victory over KC Schlagle on Thursday night. The Wildcats rushed for 366 yards in the victory led by Thomas Anderson’s 110 yards and three scores on the ground. Cory Macon added 75 yards and two touchdowns, while James Black added 85 more rush yards. Macon also passed for more than 100 yards in the game. Washington improved to 5-2 with the win and remains in the mix for a top 3 seed on the east side of Class 5A.

Olathe West improved to 4-3 with a 14-7 victory over Olathe South. Sophomore running back Anthony Favrow carried 31 times for 222 yards to lead the Owl offense. Quarterback Alex Birge added 90 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and passed for 81 yards and a score that went to Favrow. For the season, Favrow now has 947 rushing yards and nine scores.


Class 4A:

Another week, another huge game for Bonner Springs senior back Bryce Krone. Krone (6-1, 220) rushed 37 times for 305 yards and three touchdowns as the Braves outlasted Leavenworth, 40-35. Johnny Tapia added a pair of touchdown passes in the win, including a 74-yard bomb to Armani Washington. For the season, Krone now has 1,586 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns and is averaging 10 yards per carry.

Basehor-Linwood scored in each quarter in defeating Atchison, 39-20.  The Bobcats showed great balance on offense in passing for 244 yards and rushing for 228 more yards. Curtis Ingram led the Bobcats with 129 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while sophomore Zack Sisemore added 102 yards and a score. Chase Torkelson passed for 244 yards and two scores. Connor Younger led Basehor-Linwood with seven catches for 94 yards and a score.

Mulvane won its third straight game in defeating El Dorado, 41-6. Mulvane’s Tanner Claar rushed for 186 yards and three scores, while Mason Ellis rushed for 105 yards and three scores. Ellis also threw a touchdown pass. El Dorado was led by Zach Wittenberg’s 90 yards on the ground.

Spring Hill went on the road and pulled out a 7-6 victory at KC Piper. The win stopped a four-game losing streak for the Broncos after consecutive losses against opponents that are now a combined 26-2 (Bonner Springs, Paola, De Soto, Tonganoxie). Piper was led by junior La’James White’s 224 yards rushing on 27 attempts.


Class 3A

In District 8, Russell earned its first victory of the year with a 25-0 home win versus Goodland in a game that was called with 9 minutes, 42 seconds left in the game. Russell led 14-0 at halftime after touchdown runs of 45 and 29 yards from Jesse Whitmer and Rhett Pospichal, respectively. Russell held a 236-77 edge in total yards. Pospichal delivered 11 carries for 101 yards, and Whitmer had 17 carries for 92 yards. Gavin Ewers had a nice game with a blocked punt and an interception, according to Russell Radio.

Also in District 8, Concordia delivered a 34-24 victory against Beloit after the Panthers trailed 16-0 after the first quarter. The Panthers are 4-3 under first-year coach Jordan Echer. Wyatt Trost earned the team’s overall and offensive player of the game, Hunter Schroeder collected defensive honors, and Stryker Hake was the special teams award winner. Trost, the quarterback, threw for 77 yards. He rushed 22 times for 116 yards and three scores. Schroeder rushed 21 times for 101 yards and a score. Junior Chas Carlgren and Schroeder tied with seven tackles. Schroeder picked off a pass. He has delivered a complete season with 902 rushing yards and four offensive TDs. Schroeder has cleared 100 yards in the last four contests. He has picked off three passes, including a pair for touchdowns.

Hugoton beat Larned, 39-15, and set a three-way tie across the top of District 7. Sawyer Harper accounted for six touchdowns, including five passing. Hugoton built a 32-7 lead.

Prairie View improved to 7-0 with a 41-0 victory against Anderson County. The Buffaloes tallied 14 points in the first and second quarters, six in the third and seven in fourth. Prairie View had the longest pass in school history on a 93-yard play from Justin Scott to Dilan Schweer. Prairie View won District 2.

Santa Fe Trail defeated Bishop Ward, 55-8. The Chargers scored 20 points in the first, 14 in the second, and 21 in the third. Senior Andrew Berckefeldt completed 11 of 21 passes for 140 yards with three touchdowns against one interception. He delivered three carries for 118 yards. Junior Zachary Baker rushed five times for 105 yards and three TDs, while junior McClain Weekley finished with four rushes for 107 yards and a score. Santa Fe Trail is 4-3 in District 3. Coach Jayson Duncan noted the Chargers are 38-20 in the last six seasons, and 2-52 in the six years before then.


Class 2A

Riley County defeated Southeast of Saline, 33-29 and won District 4. SES junior quarterback Jackson Gebhardt completed 15 of 26 passes for 165 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Riley County limited the Trojans to 34 carries for 138 yards and four touchdowns. SES led by two, but RC quarterback Garrett Harmison threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Avrey Brokenicky. Southeast of Saline led 22-15, though Harmison threw a 15-yard touchdown pass just before the second quarter expired.

In District 8, Minneapolis defeated Thomas More Prep-Marian, 34-8. The Lions led 21-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime. Minneapolis had more than 300 yards of total offense. Daniel Watson tallied a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter.

Eureka won District 5 with a 33-14 victory against Belle Plaine. The Tornadoes have won four straight games, all at home, in its first home contests since 2017. Eureka tallied 18 points off non-offensive plays. As well, the game featured three consecutive special teams returns. Eureka junior Brennan Lowe scored in all three phases with an interception and a punt return for TDs, along with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

In District 8, Norton defeated Ellsworth, 36-14, and won its fifth straight contest. Ellsworth and Norton are each 5-2 after losing seasons in ’18.


Class 1A

Ell-Saline improved to 6-1 with a 42-19 victory versus rival Sacred Heart. In District 5, E-S led 14-6 at halftime, and 28-6 after three quarters. However, Sacred Heart had a scoring run from Mac Hemmer, then recovered an onside kick and then scored again. Owen Bradley, though, delivered two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and finished with four for the game.

Elkhart won its sixth straight contest with a 49-8 win against Stanton County and clinched District 8.  The Wildcats will be off in Week 9, and will be at home for the first round of the playoffs. Senior Chace O’Hair had 20 carries for 258 yards and five touchdowns and led the team with eight tackles. This season, O’Hair has 148 carries for 1,417 yards and 25 rushing scores, along with 81 tackles.

Oakley defeated La Crosse, 47-34 in District 6. The Plainsmen outscored La Crosse, 20-14, in the first quarter and 7-6 in the second. The teams each scored six third quarter points, and Oakley held a 14-8 advantage in the fourth. Entering the game, Oakley had two wins, while La Crosse was 5-1. Oakley ended a 10-game district losing streak with the victory. La Crosse sophomore Colby Stull went over 1,000 yards with another big game with 30 carries for 272 yards and three scores. La Crosse held a 390-274 yardage edge. Junior Ethan Abell rushed 17 times for 115 yards and three scores and threw a 41-yard touchdown pass on his only pass attempt. Senior Ellis Slack hauled in five catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, and also returned a kickoff for a score. Christian Koch recorded 20 tackles.

Hillsboro improved to 5-2 and clinched its second straight winning season with a 71-0 victory versus Leon-Bluestem. Hillsboro, playing in District 2, led 34-0 after the first quarter and tallied 37 second half points. Bluestem recorded only 110 yards of total offense. Hillsboro finished with 466 total yards. Matthew Potluck rushed for 155 yards, and Caleb Potluck had 144 yards. Each of them recorded a pair of rushing touchdowns. Matthew Potluck completed 5 of 7 passes for 66 yards and three scores.

St. Mary’s-Colgan has won three straight after a 1-3 start. Colgan, in District 1, has only played one home game in the last five weeks, and defeated Pleasanton, 33-16, on the road. Colgan had a 14-point lead after the first quarter with a three-yard run from Blaise Dawson, and a 17-yard run from Domenico Bevilacqua. After a Pleasanton touchdown, Gianni Piccini threw a 14-yard touchdown to Andrew Lomshek for a 21-8 halftime lead. In the second half, Bevilacqua scored from a yard, and Kannon Keller recorded a 50-yard interception return for a score.


Eight-Man, Division I

In District 6, Ness City improved to 7-0 with a 24-0 victory versus Kiowa County in a game that started the second half just past 10:30 p.m. because of a long weather delay. Jose Guzman passed for 32 yards and he rushed for 105 yards. Kiowa County had a slight 72-69 edge in total plays, though Ness City held a 278-232 advantage in yards. Guzman rushed for a three-yard run in the first quarter, the only scoring until the fourth quarter. Then, the Eagles scored on a 17-yard pass from Guzman to Easton Seib, a three-yard run from Nate Gabel and a two-yard run from Casen Marshall. Gabel has 17 carries for 81 yards, as KC limited Eagle standout running back Hector Rodriguez to 16 carries for 58 yards.

Hodgeman County clinched one of the top two seeds out of District 6 with a 46-28 road victory at Spearville. Eli Salmans rushed for 158 yards on 22 attempts to pace the Longhorns. Sophomore Drew Dansel rushed for 35 yards and three touchdowns and added a kickoff return for another score for Hodgeman County. The Longhorns will host undefeated Ness City to decide the District 6 title this week. Spearville will travel to South Gray with a chance to secure a playoffs spot.

Cedar Vale-Dexter improved to 6-1 and captured District 1 with a 56-8 win versus Oswego in a game that was called after three quarters. The Spartans had lost to Oswego last season and was 5-4 in ’18. The Spartans outscored Oswego, 16-8, after the first quarter, and tallied 18 unanswered in the second and 22 in the third. Standout Spartan running back Brogan Myers finished with 11 carries for 209 yards and five rushing scores. He also scored on a pair of fumble recoveries for touchdowns. Four of Myers’ rushing touchdowns came on 37, 51, 40 and 41 yards. Cedar Vale-Dexter forced four turnovers and was plus-three in turnover margin.


In a minor District 7 upset, Hill City defeated Victoria, 30-22, in a game that had the first three quarters Friday and the fourth quarter Saturday because of weather. The game was 6-6 after the first quarter. Hill City led 24-22 at halftime and tallied the final margin in the third quarter. Dalen Journigan earned overall and offensive player of the game honors. Justice Clark collected the defensive award, and Kaleb Atkins picked it up on special teams. Journigan rushed 38 times for 261 yards and four scores.


Leoti-Wichita County improved to 6-1 with a 58-8 home win versus Atwood-Rawlins County in a game that was called in the third quarter. Wichita County led 24-0 after the first and 38-8 at halftime. The Indian defense limited Rawlins County to 41 plays for 183 yards. All of the offense came on the ground. Leoti had another big day from junior quarterback Kayde Rietzke. He completed four of seven passes for 55 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. Rietzke also rushed 12 times for 170 yards and two scores. Junior Teagan Bishop led with eight tackles. Wichita County plays in District 8 where St. Francis has earned the title.


Eight-Man, Division II

Hutchinson Central Christian standout quarterback Caleb Lambert returned as the Cougars defeated Stafford, 62-18, in a game that was called with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter. Central Christian outrushed Stafford, 221-183, and held a 72-0 edge in total passing. Lambert had six rushes for 102 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed five of nine passes for 72 yards and three scores. Garrett Burns returned a kickoff 75 yards for a score. Lambert had six solo tackles, and Dawson Urwiller recorded five solo and three assisted. HCC is in second place in District 7 behind South Barber.

Beloit St. John’s-Tipton defeated Lakeside-Downs, 54-0, in a game that ended at halftime. BSJT scored 30 points in the first quarter. Junior Blake Perez has 11 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Brayden Perez delivered five carries for 66 yards and a pair of scores. Senior Wyatt Darnell recorded nine tackles. BSJT has now posted a winning season every year from ’12-19.

Mankato-Rock Hills improved to 6-1 with a 48-12 victory against Pike Valley. Rock Hills scored 14 points in the first quarter and outscored the Panthers, 34-12, in the second. Rock Hills limited Pike Valley to 26 carries for 145 yards, and 16 pass attempts for 53 yards. Rock Hills picked off two passes. The Grizzlies and Beloit St. John’s-Tipton will play for the District 5 title this week.

In District 8, Minneola improved to 6-1 with a 58-14 road win versus Ingalls that was delayed because of weather. The Wildcats led 14-0 after the first quarter and 36-8 at halftime. Senior Tuck Lang had 36 carries for 299 yards and six touchdowns. Minneola threw just one pass for an incompletion and delivered 61 carries for 414 yards and eight touchdowns. Minneola has won the district.

Also in District 8, Otis-Bison defeated Chase, 54-6, with 36 first quarter points in a game that was called at halftime. Sophomore Kaden Foust completed four of eight passes for 38 yards and two scores. Four players delivered a rushing score, including three from sophomore Logan Thille.


KCAA 

Cair Paravel stopped a three-game losing streak with a 58-34 win over Veritas Christian. The Lions overcame a big night form Veritas’ Andrew Windheuser who rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns on 40 attempts.
