Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

After a three-game losing streak to ranked-powerhouses Bishop Carroll, Wichita Northwest and undefeated Dodge City, the Wichita West Pioneers got back to their winning ways in a Thursday night 59-6 takedown of Wichita North. The Pioneers led 46-6 at halftime, behind rushing touchdowns from Jeremiah Brown, Quentin Saunders, Jaheim Richbow, Ronny Thomas, and Zavion Parks-Clarke. All 600 yards of offence were on the ground, as neither team were able to make a completion, a West interception being the only exception.

Wichita East was able to extend their win streak to four games on Friday with a 46-12 victory over Liberal. The Blue Aces defense held the Redskins to 157 total yards of offence and caused four turnovers. East had 258 passing yards and four touchdowns in the game. The Blue Aces will take on the Golden Buffaloes of Wichita Southeast this week. Southeast defeated Liberal 33-28 back in Week 4.

Blue Valley North was able to use a strong fourth-quarter effort to defeat Blue Valley Southwest, 20-3. The Mustangs led 6-3 heading into the fourth quarter, and had two passing touchdowns in the final twelve minutes to seal the deal. North will take on struggling Blue Valley Northwest next week, while Southwest will take on Blue Valley West in Thursday action.

Sophomore kicker Grant Snowden connected on a 38-yard field goal on the final play of the game to give Manhattan a 31-28 victory over rival Junction City. Manhattan scored the game’s first 14 points and the final ten points in winning back the Silver Trophy after last year’s surprising 9-7 win by Junction City. Dayne Aschenbrenner and B.J. Young each rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Manhattan. Junction City’s Russell Wilkey rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass, and threw a touchdown pass on a halfback pass.


Class 5A:

Lansing evened its record at 3-3 with a 38-0 shutout of KC Harmon. The Lions led 24-0 at halftime and scored twice more in the third quarter. Quarterback Luke Schneider rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to Reece Thomas. Derrick Robinson II led the Lansing offense with 80 yards rushing and a touchdown on only eight attempts.

Wichita Heights pulled away from Wichita South with two touchdowns in the second half for a 42-23 win on Thursday night. The Falcons led the Titans 28-23 at halftime. Junior Joshua Sanders rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns to lead Wichita Heights. Freshman John Randle added 110 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while sophomore Adrian Patterson added a touchdown run. Jordan Huggins led Wichita South with 125 yards rushing, while quarterback Jashun Grant added 115 yards on the ground and 52 yards through the air.

KC Washington edged KC Wyandotte 26-18 to improve to 4-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in the Kansas City-Atchison League. Thomas Anderson rushed for a team-high 173 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats. Sophomore Jason Black added 128 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Junior Cory Macon passed for 93 yards and a touchdown that went to standout receiver MarKeith Grayson, Jr. Washington hosts KC Schlagle this week with the KCAL championship on the line.  

Mill Valley scored three touchdowns in the second half to blow open a 10-0 halftime game in defeating Pittsburg, 31-0. Cooper Marsh passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns – two each to Jacob Hartman and Ty Reishus. Hartman caught three balls for 109 yards and Reishus had five receptions for 99 yards. Tyler Green led the Jaguar ground game with 71 yards on nine attempts. Pittsburg was led by sophomore Caiden Barber’s 50 rushing yards on 11 carries.  


Class 4A:

Bryce Krone had a huge night as Bonner Springs rolled to a 63-6 win over Baldwin. Krone rushed 11 times for 309 yards and four touchdowns as the Braves improved to 4-2 on the season. Bonner Springs ran only 22 offensive plays in the game but racked up 399 yards. Krone now has 1,281 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.

Buhler rebounded from a close loss to McPherson with a 48-3 win over Towanda-Circle. The Crusader defense forced four Circle turnovers and held the T-Birds to 23 rush yards on 17 attempts. Circle could only manage a Trevor Hammer field goal in the game. Buhler will host Hays (2-4) on Thursday night.

Louisburg was victorious for a fourth consecutive week as the Wildcats handled Atchison, 41-12. The Wildcats built a 21-6 halftime lead on the strength of three Ben Wiedenmann touchdown runs. Louisburg added three more scores after halftime on short touchdown runs from Andy Hupp and Maverick Rockers sandwiched around a Madden Rutherford touchdown pass to Weston Guetterman.

Wellington picked up its first victory of the season with a 21-0 road shutout of Labette County. The Crusaders led 13-0 at halftime behind a touchdown pass from Berkeley Wright to Silas Popplewell and a long touchdown run by Zane Cornejo. Trace Rusk added the final points of the game on a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Rusk led the Crusaders with 123 yards on the ground, while the Wellington defense held the Grizzlies to negative rushing yards.


Class 3A:

In District 8, Colby defeated Russell, 55-14, in a home district contest and remained perfect at 6-0. The Eagles led 27-0 after the first quarter. Of the first four touchdowns, Calvin Stapp tallied two, Mason Wright had one and Hagan Booi tallied one. Overall, Stapp had 175 rushing yards and Wright tallied 136, according to Russell Radio. Colby led 41-7 at halftime.

In District 7, Holcomb defeated Kingman, 19-0, with seven points in the first quarter, six in the second and six in the third. Sophomore Kaden Johnson completed 10 of 22 passes for 98 yards with a touchdown against three interceptions. Junior Drew Hill recorded 19 carries for 73 yards with a touchdown.

Also in District 8, Concordia defeated Goodland, 42-34, in a wild game. Concordia led 12-6 after the first quarter. However, Goodland took a 34-28 lead at halftime. Concordia outscored Goodland, 7-0, in the third and fourth quarters. Goodland’s Leyton Cure had 439 passing yards and five touchdowns, along with 42 rushing yards.  Concordia junior Hunter Schroeder recorded 29 carries for 237 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior quarterback Wyatt Trost has 16 carries for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also completed six of 11 passes for 73 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

In District 2, Prairie View moved to 6-0 with a 41-27 victory versus Girard. Prairie View led 12-0 after the first quarter and 20-0 at halftime. PV led 41-14 after three quarters. Senior Hunter Boone had 23 carries for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Damien Kline had nine carries for 87 yards and a score. Boone has 706 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Boone has three straight 100-yard games.


Class 2A:

In District 3, Maur Hill-Mount Academy moved to 5-1 with a 49-0 victory versus Atchison County. MH-MA scored 28 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second at Guy Galley Field. Senior quarterback Jack Caudle delivered another huge game with 15 of 21 passing for 222 yards with four scores against no interceptions. Junior Andrew Schwinn led the team with 10 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

In District 5, Fredonia held a 6-4 lead entering the fourth quarter after Belle Plaine scored twice on safeties after bad Fredonia snaps. BP, though, tallied its only touchdown with 2:41 left in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run from quarterback Luke Baker for a 13-6 victory. The Dragons moved to 6-0 and will face Eureka for the district championship this week. BP took a 7-6 lead on a 27-yard field goal from Caleb Steele, according to the Sumner Newscow.

In District 4, Southeast of Saline defeated Mission Valley, 48-6. SES rushed for 292 yards. Quarterback Jaxson Gebhardt tallied a 19-yard touchdown run, and then returned a punt 64 yards for a score. Bryant Banks had 22 carries for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Gebhardt finished with 19 carries for 128 yards and a pair of rushing scores. Matthew Rodriguez continued a strong defensive season with 12 tackles, four for loss.

In District 8, Ellsworth pulled an upset against defending state champion Phillipsburg, 14-13. Ellsworth and Phillipsburg were tied at seven after the first quarter. The score remained the same at halftime. Ellsworth scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and Phillipsburg tallied six points in the fourth.


Class 1A:

In District 8, Elkhart earned a 35-0 shutout of Syracuse and posted its fifth straight victory. The game was scoreless after the first quarter. The Wildcats outscored Syracuse 14-0 in the second, 14-0 in the third and 7-0 in the fourth. Senior Emmanuel Moreno completed four of six passes for 62 yards with a touchdown. Senior Chace O’Hair had another big game with 17 carries for 140 yards and three scores. He also led the team with 18 tackles. The 6-foot, 200-pound O’Hair has averaged 9.1 yards per carry with 1,159 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns this season. He has at least 135 yards in every game.

In District 5, Republic County remained winless this season but again came close to an upset. Ell-Saline defeated the Buffs, 36-30, on Senior Night and bumped the Buffs’ losing streak to 25 games. Republic County led 30-29 with 1:43 left. E-S had a 4th-and-10 on the 36-yard line, when T.J. Morrical threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Drees. Earlier in the game, Drees delivered a 42-yard touchdown run. After Morrical’s touchdown pass, Sawyer Kramer picked off RC to secure the win. Kramer had six rushes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Morrical finished 9 of 17 passing for 130 yards and two touchdowns, according to E-S radio.

In District 3, Lyndon remained undefeated with a 22-12 home win versus Jefferson County North. Lyndon trailed 6-0 after the first quarter and 12-7 at halftime. However, Lyndon scored eight points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. Senior Ethan Edington had three carries for 101 yards and a score, including an 82-yard run. Senior Shawn Hinck delivered 19 carries for 76 yards and a score.

In District 6, Ellis held off Oakley, 22-14, and improved to 3-3. Junior Tegan Cain continued his solid season with 10 of 16 passing for 89 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Junior Konnor Pfeifer delivered 17 carries for 157 yards and two scores. Junior Ethan Abell had 19 carries for 144 yards and a score for Oakley. He also caught three passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Senior Ellis Slack had three catches for 85 yards.


Eight-Man, Division I:

In District 1, Cedar Vale-Dexter improved to 5-1 with a 58-8 win versus West Elk in a game called at halftime. CV-D led 20-8 after the first quarter and then scored 38 unanswered in the second quarter. CV-D held a 356-95 edge in total yards. Brogan Myers, who had been slowed in some contests this season, had a huge game with 11 carries for 197 yards and six touchdowns. Clayton Henderson completed 1 of 3 passes for 49 yards and a score.

Also in District 1, Central-Burden pulled an upset versus Oswego, 36-20. C-B entered the game 1-4, while Oswego was 4-1. C-B steadily pulled away throughout the contest. The Raiders led 6-0 after the first quarter, 14-6 at halftime, 22-12 after three quarters and 36-20 after four. Oswego senior Jace Wilson had another big game with 24 carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed two of four passes for 35 yards and caught a 26-yard pass. However, Oswego committed four turnovers with a pair of interceptions and two lost fumbles.

In District 6, Ness City defeated Spearville, 32-26, and remained undefeated. NC led 12-0 after the first quarter. The Eagles led 18-14 at halftime. The teams both tallied six points in the third quarter, and NC held a 8-6 edge in the fourth quarter. Spearville had 74 plays for 286 yards, while Ness City delivered 56 plays for 281 yards. All but eight of Ness City’s yards came on the ground. Hector Rodriguez delivered 15 carries for 152 yards and three scores. Jose Guzman has 15 carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Ness City held on to win after Spearville scored its final touchdown with 4:16 left.

Maranatha Academy defeated Burlingame, 44-12, in a District 3 game. Senior Nate Burdette completed 14 of 25 passes for 149 yards with three touchdowns against one interception. Senior Gabe Wiley delivered 25 carries for 194 yards and a score. Senior Brock West recorded five catches for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

In District 5, Little River beat Macksville, 48-0, in a game called in the third quarter. LR led 22-0 after the first quarter and 36-0 at halftime. The Redskins won their fifth straight contest. LR’s junior combination of Graham Stephens and Jayden Garrison had another big game. Stephens completed 1 of 2 passes for a 68-yard pass. Garrison completed 1 of 2 passes for one yard. Stephens rushed nine times for 119 yards and three scores. Garrison had 10 carries for 65 yards and three TDs.


Eight-Man, Division II:

In District 6, Wheatland-Grinnell defeated Gove County rival Quinter for the first time in program history with a 36-18 victory. W-G led 8-6 after the first quarter, 22-12 at halftime and 28-12 following the third quarter. Sophomore Trey Vincent completed six of 16 passes for 66 yards with a touchdown. Sophomore Tyrell Chapin delivered 16 carries for 99 yards and two scores. Junior Trevor Zarybnicky continues his outstanding season with 14 tackles, while Chapin had 10 stops. Freshman Jett Vincent now has 10 interceptions after two more Friday. He leads eight-man football in INTs. Wheatland-Grinnell is 5-1, has a four-win improvement over last year and its first winning season since 2012.

In District 3, Frankfort remained undefeated with a 54-20 non-district road win versus Beloit/St. John’s-Tipton. The game was tied at 14 after the first quarter. Frankfort outscored BSJT, 14-0, in the second quarter, 12-6 in the third and 14-0 in the fourth. Frankfort held a 24-11 edge in first downs. The Wildcats limited BSJT to 93 passing and 101 rushing yards on 48 total plays. Senior Wyatt Darnell and junior Anthony Henke paces the Blujays with 16 tackles apiece.

In District 7, Central Christian defeated Fairfield, 54-0. However, standout quarterback Caleb Lambert is out with injury and coach Lee Smith does not know his return. The Cougars had 18 carries for 161 yards and five scores. CC completed four of six passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars limited Fairfield to 24 plays for 48 yards. Junior Dawson Urwiller stepped in at quarterback. He had all 82 passing yards, and rushed six times for 29 yards and a score. Garrett Burns recorded 96 yards of offense with a rushing touchdown. Sophomore T.J. Bessmer delivered a pair of rushing scores, and a receiving touchdown. Bessmer and Adam Hall each recorded an interception.

In District 5, a week after nearly upsetting undefeated Thunder Ridge, Sylvan-Lucas beat Northern Valley, 52-7, in a road contest. The game lasted into the fourth quarter. S-L led 24-0 after the first quarter. Beau Batchman tallied 244 rushing yards and four scores.

In District 4, Mankato-Rock Hills defeated Southern Cloud, 70-6, in a game called at halftime. Rock Hills led 48-0 after the first quarter. Junior Jerrod Gillett completed four of four passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Rylee Whelchel delivered four carries for 75 yards and three scores. He also caught two passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Junior Davion McDonald returned a punt for a touchdown.

A year after the rare halftime tie, South Barber defeated Otis-Bison, 48-0, in a game called at halftime. SB led 16-0 after the first quarter and scored 32 points in the second quarter. Senior Trevor Rooks has completed eight of 10 passes for 134 yards with two touchdowns. Rooks also rushed 11 times for 67 yards and two scores.


Six-man:

Bird City-Cheylin remained undefeated with a 45-0 victory versus Cunningham. Cheylin rushed for 131 yards and four scores.


KCAA:

Wichita Homeschool exploded for 62 points in the first quarter in a 74-0 victory over Wichita Life Prep Academy. Warrior quarterback Will Day passed for 183 yards and five touchdowns to push his season total to 1,278 yards and 31 touchdowns without an interception. Day through two touchdown passes to Kip Ammons and one each to Luke Johnson, Josiah Gordon, and Carson Emmot. Junior Kiason Snowbarger led the Warriors on the ground with 81 yards and three touchdowns on seven attempts.
