Last week proved to not be a good week to be ranked second. Three teams ranked No. 2 in last week’s Kpreps polls lost last Friday night. How did their losses impact the top five? Find out with the Kpreps Week 4 Rankings.
Class 6A
We have more movement in this week’s Class 6A poll as Lawrence High traveled to Gardner-Edgerton and defeated the then second-ranked Blazers, 35-34. As a result, the Chesty Lions leap into the poll at No. 4 this week, while Gardner-Edgerton falls from No. 2 down to No. 5.
Derby stays at the top after another dominating victory in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League. The Panthers throttled Newton, 63-7, to set up this week’s showdown with Class 5A No. 3 Bishop Carroll. Derby won at Carroll, 24-6, last season.
Olathe North moves up one spot this week to No. 2. The Eagles beat Shawnee Mission West, 30-10, behind a big performance from Arland Bruce, IV. Bruce rushed for more than 250 yards and three scores in the win. The Eagles will host Columbine (Colo.) this week at the College Boulevard Athletic Complex (CBAC). Columbine is 4-0 and ranked No. 1 in Colorado Class 5A. Columbine won last year’s meeting, 48-12.
Topeka High climbs to No. 3 this week after a 60-8 rout of Topeka Highland Park. Senior back Ky Thomas, a Minnesota commit, did not get tackled in the game in rushing for 144 yards and five touchdowns on five carries. The Trojans will host unbeaten Junction City (3-0) on Thursday this week at Hummer Park.
Despite a 31-13 win over Blue Valley Southwest, the Blue Valley Tigers get pushed out of the poll this week with Gardner-Edgerton’s loss and Lawrence’s entry to the poll. The Tigers get a big interstate showdown with Missouri power Rockhurst (3-1).
Class 5A
Once again, the Class 5A poll remains the same as last week. Top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas rolled to a 68-16 win over Blue Valley Northwest. Tank Young led the Aquinas ground game with 216 yards rushing and five touchdowns. The Saints will travel to Mill Valley (1-2) this week to take on a Jaguar team that nearly upset Bishop Miege on Friday.
Second-ranked Wichita Northwest went on the road and posted an impressive shutout of Great Bend. The Grizzlies won 31-0 and will host Wichita West (2-1) this week.
Third-ranked Bishop Carroll pulled away from Wichita West, 34-7. Carroll’s Hunter Trail scored four touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles to victory. Bishop Carroll travels to Class 6A No. 1 Derby this week.
De Soto stays at No. 4 this week after a 71-0 blowout of KC Turner. The Wildcats’ schedule will get more difficult this week when they take on an improved Lansing team.
Finally, Maize rolled to another big victory, 49-12 over Haysville Campus. The fifth-ranked Eagles will travel to Newton this week.
Class 4A
Just like Gardner-Edgerton in Class 6A, another No. 2 team went down in Class 4A. Goddard fell three spots from No. 2 to No. 5 this week after a 38-21 loss at Andover Central. The Jaguars controlled the game and earned the No. 4 spot in this week’s poll – just ahead of the Lions.
Bishop Miege remains atop the 4A poll this week after surviving an upset bid from Mill Valley. The Stags led 35-10 late in the third quarter only to see the Jaguars rally to tie the game at 35 with under a minute to go. Daniel Jackson then returned the ensuing kickoff 80-yards for a touchdown to allow Miege to escape with a 42-35 win.
McPherson replaces Goddard in the No. 2 spot this week after a 55-16 win over El Dorado. The Bullpups will travel to winless Abilene this week.
Paola moves up one spot to No. 3 this week after another blowout win. The Panthers blasted fellow Frontier League member Ottawa, 56-3. Paola hosts Spring Hill (2-1) this week.
Fifth-ranked Pittsburg falls out of the poll after a 27-3 loss at 6A contender Blue Valley North.
Class 3A
There were no changes in this week’s Class 3A poll. Top-ranked Sabetha extended its win streak to 23 consecutive games with come-from-behind win at Perry-Lecompton. The Blue Jays trailed 14-0 but rallied for the 41-21 victory. Sabetha hosts No. 3 Marysville this week to open district play.
Second-ranked Andale cruised to 63-0 win over Rose Hill. The Indians return home this week to open district play against Haven.
Marysville remains at No. 3 spot after at 28-12 victory at Concordia. The Bulldogs enter a key district stretch where they will travel to No. 1 Sabetha this week before next week’s trip to unbeaten Wamego.
Fourth-ranked Topeka Hayden cruised to a 41-7 win at Washburn Rural. The Wildcats hadn’t defeated the Junior Blues since 2014. Hayden opens district play this week at Santa Fe Trail (2-1).
Finally, Scott City started district play a week early by blowing out Goodland, 55-0. The week-early start of district play will allow the Beavers to travel to Ulysses this week to take on the Tigers.
Class 2A
Defending state champion Phillipsburg has dropped from the top spot to completely out of the poll in the last two weeks. The Panthers dropped a 27-7 decision to Class 1A No. 1 Smith Center on Friday, ending a streak of eight consecutive wins over the Redmen.
Hoisington remains in the top spot after pulling away from a solid Larned team, 41-19. The Cardinals lead 26-19 after three quarters before adding a pair of scores. Wyatt Pedigo had a huge game with nearly 275 yards rushing, five rushing scores, and an interception for another touchdown.
Silver Lake moves up to No. 2 this week after a 25-0 shutout of Riley County. With the victory, the Eagles earned coach C.J. Hamilton his 425th career win against only 92 losses.
Third-ranked Rossville is up a spot this week after a 44-16 victory over Rock Creek. The Bulldawgs open district play this week against last year’s state runner-up, Riley County.
Garden Plain climbs another spot this week to No. 4 after a 49-0 shutout of Wichita Trinity. The Owls got a big game from senior Matt Pauly who accounted for more than 230 yards of total offense and five total touchdowns. Garden Plain will be heavily favored at home this week against winless Whitewater-Remington.
Southeast of Saline enters the poll for the first time this season at No. 5. The Trojans narrowly edge out Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Lakin for the final spot in this week’s poll. Southeast of Saline moved to 3-0 with a 52-10 win over Russell.
Class 1A
Top-ranked Smith Center stopped a string of eight consecutive losses to Mid-Continent League rival Phillipsburg with a 27-7 road win. The Redmen led 27-0 at halftime and handed the Panthers their second consecutive loss. The Redmen will now host No. 2 Plainville this week.
Plainville followed-up back-to-back close victories with a 16-0 win at Thomas More Prep. The Cardinals had defeated Norton (29-22) and Phillipsburg (21-14) before Friday’s win over the Monarchs. Plainville now will travel to Smith Center this week.
Olpe moves up one spot to No. 3 this week as a result of Jackson Heights’ 18-14 loss to Maur Hill-Mount Academy. Olpe defeated a solid Christ Prep Academy team, 21-14, and will now take on Jackson Heights this week. The Cobras fell just outside the top five this week after their close loss to the Ravens.
Valley Heights rolled to another big victory on Friday, 66-19 over Atchison County. The Mustangs exploded for 44 points in the first half. Cole Coggins had another huge performance with 211 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Valley Heights hosts winless Republic County this week.
Finally, Centralia moves back in the poll after a 40-0 win over St. Marys. The Panthers’ only loss came in the season-opener at 3A No. 3 Rossville. Centralia will travel to St. Mary’s Colgan this week in clash of two perennial small-school powers. This will be the 12th meeting all-time between the two sets of Panthers with Colgan holding a 7-4 advantage, however, Centralia has won three of the past four in the series.
Class 8M-I
Top-ranked Canton-Galva cruised to another shutout – blasting Centre-Lost Springs, 48-0. The Eagles will travel to Bennington this week to take on a Bulldog team that is capable of putting up points.
Second-ranked Saint Francis had no issue with a short week of preparation. The Indians cruised to a 46-0 win at Dighton on Thursday night. Saint Francis will now host unbeaten Oberlin-Decatur Community this week.
The showdown between No. 3 Hodgeman County and No. 4 South Central went the way of the Timberwolves. South Central got a huge night from Chayde Snyder in beating the Longhorns, 48-14. As a result, South Central moves up to No. 3 this week and Hodgeman County drops out of this week’s poll. The Timberwolves will look to keep things rolling on a road trip to Udall.
Madison moves up a spot to No. 4 this week after a dominating, 63-0 win over Hartford. Nasun Wasson scored five touchdowns in the first quarter for the Bulldogs. Madison will get a huge district challenge this week from Maranatha Christian Academy. The Eagles come in unbeaten having won their three games by a combined margin of 164-0.
Finally, Victoria leaps into the poll at No. 5 this week. The Knights, despite being a relatively young team, have posted impressive wins over three Central Prairie League opponents. Victoria has beaten Otis-Bison, defending-champion Central Plains, and Macksville this season.
Class 8M-II
Whenever people begin to think that Hanover is vulnerable, the Wildcats rise to the occasion and set everyone straight. Hanover won its 41st consecutive game on Friday with a dominating 66-16 win at high-scoring Mankato-Rock Hills. Hanover’s 41-game win streak ties a state-record for eight-man football with Northern Valley’s run from 1985-88.
Axtell moved to 2-0 in district play with a 60-14 win at Onaga. Eagle quarterback Quinn Buessing’s passed for 314 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for two more scores. Axtell will travel to Pike Valley (2-1) this week for a non-district game.
Osborne remains at No. 3 in the poll after beating Stockton, 46-8. The Bulldogs will host Sylvan-Lucas Unified (2-1) this week to open play in District 5.
Saint Paul remains ranked fourth after a 52-6 win over West Elk. The Indians built a 36-8 halftime lead in handing the Patriots their first loss of the season. Saint Paul begins competition in District 1 this week where the Indians’ four other district opponents have a combined 1-14 record.
Finally, Thunder Ridge enters the poll at No. 5 this week replacing Hutchinson Central Christian. Central Christian fell 34-20 to South Barber on Friday, while Thunder Ridge picked up a solid 48-22 win over Hill City. The Longhorns were led by Reece Struckhoff’s 234-yard, five-touchdown night on the ground. Struckhoff also returned a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns in the win.
