Week Two action saw only five of the 40 teams ranked the Kpreps poll lose, including one classification’s top-ranked team. Let’s find out how our voters have arranged this week’s poll.
Class 6A
There is movement in this week’s Class 6A poll as two ranked teams lost on Friday.
Top-ranked Derby continued its dominance with a 49-0 road win at Salina Central. Senior Tre Washington rushed for more than 130 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.
Gardner-Edgerton moved to 2-0 with a 34-7 win over Olathe West on Thursday night. The game was shortened due to weather. Gardner-Edgerton has a big test with unbeaten Lawrence this week.
Olathe North moves up one spot to No. 3 this week thanks to a 68-22 victory over Shawnee Mission North. Caleb Nelson stepped in at quarterback and had a huge game – passing for more than 280 yards and two scores. Arland Bruce, IV added four touchdowns from the backfield.
Topeka High debuts in the top five at No. 4 this week after a 32-27 win over Manhattan. The Trojans took their first lead with just over a minute remaining on a Ky Thomas touchdown run. Thomas finished with nearly 300 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns.
Blue Valley moves back in the polls this week after a 34-7 win over last week’s No. 3 Blue Valley North. The game was postponed from Thursday night when Blue Valley led 14-7 at halftime. When things resumed on Friday afternoon, the Tigers scored immediately when Chase Jans returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Blue Valley has beaten Blue Valley North in eight of the past ten meetings.
Class 5A
The Class 5A poll remains the same as last week. Top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas had little trouble in a 62-7 victory over Blue Valley Southwest. The Saints were led by junior back Tank Young’s 141 yards and three scores.
Wichita Northwest stays in the No. 2 spot after blasting Wichita East, 75-8. The high-scoring Grizzlies will travel to Great Bend (2-0) this week.
Third-ranked Bishop Carroll rolled past Wichita Heights, 55-12. Carroll has another big city league showdown this week against unbeaten Wichita West.
Fourth-ranked De Soto rolled to another big win – 66-14 over KC Wyandotte. The Wildcats will face KC Turner this week. De Soto’s first three opponents are each 0-2 to start the season.
Finally, Maize drilled Hutchinson 55-14 to remain in the No. 5 spot. The Eagles will take on Haysville Campus this week.
Class 4A
There were no changes in this week’s Class 4A poll.
Bishop Miege stays on top after a 48-21 win over Blue Valley West. Quarterback Tim Dorsey passed for 296 yards and five scores in the win. The Stags will travel to Mill Valley (1-1) this week.
Second-ranked Goddard shut out Arkansas City, 48-0. Kyler Semrad had a huge night in passing for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns. Semrad connected with Blake Mitchell eight times for 243 yards and three scores.
Sticking with the shutout theme, No. 3 McPherson held Winfield scoreless in a 47-0 win, and No. 4 Paola blasted Fort Scott, 58-0.
Fifth-ranked Pittsburg received a challenge from Chanute before the Purple Dragons prevailed, 41-27. Pittsburg will travel to Blue Valley North (0-2) this week.
Class 3A
There were no changes in this week’s Class 3A poll. Top-ranked Sabetha extended its win streak to 22 consecutive games with a 50-7 win over Riverside.
Second-ranked Andale rolled to 35-7 win over Wellington despite quarterback Easton Hunter missing the game due to an injury. The Indians scored all 35 of their points in the first half.
Marysville remains in the No. 3 spot after outscoring Clay Center, 56-31. Atreyau Hornbeak rushed for 175 yards and scored seven touchdowns in the victory.
Fourth-ranked Topeka Hayden beat Topeka Seaman, 54-7, to stop a three-game losing streak against the Vikings. Hayden scored 40 points in the second half to pull away. The Wildcats will be on the road at Washburn Rural this week.
Finally, Scott City remains at No. 5 this week after a 14-3 victory over Holcomb. The Beavers still have not allowed a touchdown this season.
Class 2A
Class 2A features the most changes to the top five this week as three ranked teams went down on Friday night.
The Hoisington Cardinals will have their home-opener this Friday, and will enter as the new, unanimous No. 1 team in Class 2A. The Cardinals’ 40-13 win at Nickerson coupled with Phillipsburg’s loss to Plainville has propelled Hoisington into the top spot. On Friday, the Cardinals earned coach Zach Baird his 50th career victory.
Phillipsburg fell just one spot this week to No. 2 after the close loss to Plainville (No. 2 in Class 1A). Plainville scored with 1:08 remaining in the game to end the Panthers’ 14-game win streak. Phillipsburg must rebound quickly as they host Class 1A’s No. 1 team, Smith Center, this week.
Silver Lake held off rival Rossville 14-13 in the “War on 24” on Friday night. After being tied 7-7 at halftime, the Silver Lake defense stuffed Rossville three times from the 1-yard line in the third quarter. Silver Lake then went 99 yards, taking a 14-7 lead on a 22-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass from Cody Hay to Trey Koelzer. Rossville answered with a touchdown pass, but the PAT snap was bobbled and never had a chance. Despite the loss, Rossville remains at No. 4 in this week’s poll.
Garden Plain enters the poll at No. 5 this week after outscoring Douglass, 50-31. The Owls’ led 44-0 at halftime and 44-8 entering the fourth quarter. Garden Plain quarterback Matt Pauly accounted for five total touchdowns on the night - passing for four scores and rushing for another.
Conway Springs drops out of this week’s poll after a 49-19 loss at Cheney.
Class 1A
Smith Center stays in the top spot after a 41-18 win over rival Norton. The Redmen will get a big test this week when they travel 2A No. 3 Phillipsburg. Phillipsburg has beaten Smith Center eight consecutive times including 42-14 last season, but the Panthers will be coming off a loss for the first time in 15 games.
Plainville handed Phillipsburg that loss on Friday, scoring late to beat the Panthers, 21-14. Cardinal quarterback Jordan Finnesy scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:08 remaining to end Phillipsburg’s 14-game win streak. Plainville travels to Hays this week to take on Thomas More Prep.
Jackson Heights remains in the No. 3 spot after rolling past Atchison County, 41-8. The Cobras should get a test this week when they host Maur Hill-Mount Academy and the Ravens standout quarterback Jack Caudle.
Olpe stays at No. 4 in this week’s poll after a dominating 42-0 win at Burlington. The Eagles have won three-straight against the Wildcats, including the last two by a combined score of 73-0. Olpe gets a tough this week when they travel to Christ Prep Academy. The Patriots (3-0) have yet to allow a point this season, and captured the National Homeschool Football Association National Championship last fall. Olpe defeated Christ Prep, 13-8 last season.
Finally, Valley Heights rolled to another big victory on Friday – shutting out Horton, 54-0. The Mustangs will travel to Atchison County this week.
Class 8M-I
Top-ranked Canton-Galva went on the road and had little trouble with Chase County. The Eagles won 46-0 in a game that ended at halftime. Quarterback Landon Everett had a hand in five touchdowns including two rushing and three passing scores.
Second-ranked Saint Francis stepped out of state and shutout Holly (Colo.), 62-0. The Indians were initially scheduled to play Tribune-Greeley County, but the Jackrabbits cancelled the game prior to the season starting given a lack of available players.
Hodgeman County stays in the No. 3 this week after 48-28 win over a solid Medicine Lodge team. Eli Salmans rushed for 185 yards and scored three touchdowns in the win. This week, the Longhorns travel to take on No. 4 South Central in a huge matchup in 8-Man, Division I. South Central rolled to a 45-0 victory at traditional contender Spearville. Chayde Snyder passed for four scores and rushed for three more in the win.
Finally, Madison remains at No. 5 in the poll after rolling to a 57-0 shutout of Waverly. The Bulldogs scored four touchdowns in the first quarter to quickly take control. Madison has now outscored its two opponents 121-8.
Class 8M-II
Hanover won its 40th consecutive game by handling Doniphan West, 44-8, to open district play. It’s been well documented that the Wildcats lost a of great talent off of last year’s team, but thus far, Hanover is unscathed. Both wins have been challenging with the Wildcats gradually pulling away. Hanover gets a tough test this week when the Wildcats step away from district play to travel to Mankato-Rock Hills in one of the state’s top games.
Axtell opened district play with a 58-6 victory over Blue Valley Randolph. The Eagles were led by Quinn Buessing’s 232-yard passing night with 5 touchdown passes. Buessing also added 89 yards and a score. Mitchell Buessing caught five passes for 145 yards and three scores.
Osborne remains at No. 3 in this week after a 54-26 win over Hoxie. The Bulldogs rushed for 310-yard sin the game led by senior Darrien Holloway’s 157-yard, three-touchdown performance.
Saint Paul stays in the No. 4 spot this week after a 58-12 at Wichita Life Prep Academy. Early in the week it looked as if this game might not happen as Life Prep planned to play a school in Oklahoma instead, but, thankfully, the game was played as scheduled and the Indians put out a young Fire team.
Finally, Hutchinson Central Christian cruised to a 52-0 shutout of Norwich. The Cougars have a big district showdown this week with South Barber that will likely decide the District 7 championship. South Barber defeated the Cougars 70-68 in three overtimes last season.
