Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
In his first ever game at running back, Marcivies Grayson rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead Wichita Southeast to a 27-12 victory over previously-unbeaten Wichita North. Larry Cherry and Quintin Thomas each rushed for touchdowns as the Golden Buffaloes churned out 246 rushing yards while only attempting two passes.
The Wichita South Titans rushed for 354 yards in beating Arkansas City, 38-28. Sophomore Jordan Huggins led the Titan ground game with 137 yards and a score on 11 carries. Antwain Scales added 98 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Jashun Grant and Antoin Alston each rushed for touchdowns. Grant also passed for 125 yards and a score as the Titans put up 479 yards of total offense.
Shawnee Mission Northwest improved to 3-0 with a 27-21, overtime victory over Olathe South. Freshman quarterback Blake Reeder tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ty Lindenman in overtime to put the Cougars up six points. The PAT was blocked meaning Northwest would need a stop to win. Payton Carder knocked down the Olathe South fourth-down pass to secure the victory for Shawnee Mission Northwest. Northwest quarterback Ty Black and Olathe South quarterback Evan Foster both left the game with injuries. Sophomore Reed Smith entered the game and passed for more than 250 yards for Olathe South.
Hutchinson scored in each quarter in picking up its first win of the season, 28-24 over Garden City. Garden City failed to convert on four two-point conversion attempts. Hutchinson’s Patrick Graebner rushed for more than 160 yards and a touchdown and hauled in a touchdown catch. Carlos Acosta led Garden City with 111 rushing yards and 119 passing yards and a touchdown. Reece Morss added two rushing scores.
Class 5A:
Andover took advantage of early Goddard-Eisenhower turnovers and held on for a 30-22 victory on Thursday night. The Trojans were led by sophomore quarterback Eli Fahnestock who passed for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
Salina Central knocked off crosstown rival Salina South, 27-3, to win the Mayor’s Cup for the first time since 2010. Taylon Peters rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown and added a touchdown catch in the win. Jackson Kavanagh threw touchdown passes to three different receivers in the win.
Blue Valley West edged St. James Academy, 35-32, to pick up its first win of the season. Abe Lawrence rushed for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown, while Edgar Hunley added 128 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. The Jaguars rushed for 358 yards in the game. Quarterback Greg Riddle passed for 172 yards and three touchdowns – all of which went to David Brown who had five receptions for 123 yards. St. James was led by Mike Tujage’s 120 yards on the ground, including three touchdowns.
Valley Center held off Maize South, 23-13, to pick up its second win of the season. Hornet senior running back Larry Wilson rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries in the game. Sophomore Hunter Sharp also connected on a 28-yard field goal to complete the scoring.
Class 4A:
Spring Hill scored on a 24-yard touchdown run by in the fourth quarter and Brennen Feeback added the two-point conversion to lift the Broncos to a 24-23 victory over Bonner Springs. Zade Barker led Spring Hill with 99 rushing yards and two scores on 26 carries. Bonner Springs was led by Bryce Krone’s 222-yard, two-touchdown night.
Korbin Riedel carried 33 times for 151 yards and four touchdowns as Tonganoxie defeated Eudora, 34-6. Tongy quarterback Hayden Robbins added 26 rushing yards and a score, while passing for 122 yards on the night.
KC Piper moved to 3-0 with a 56-28 rout of Atchison. Atchison led the Pirates 12-8 early in the second quarter before Piper scored three consecutive touchdowns to lead 31-12 at halftime. Dalton White then rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to provide separation. Dalton White rushed for three scores in the game, while LaJames White added two scores on the ground.
Wellington picked up win number 600 in school history on Friday night, defeating Clearwater, 47-26. Grey Hatfield rushed for 196 yards and four touchdowns and quarterback Michael Ledbetter added more than 200 yards through the air to lead the Crusader offense. DeAndre Washington hauled in six receptions for 140 yards and a score for Wellington.
Quarterback Easton Dean passed for 324 yards and two touchdowns as Labette County doubled-up Coffeyville-Field Kindley, 28-14. Dean added 129 yards on the ground, with a touchdown, on 27 attempts. Senior receiver Anthony Lee caught four passes for 135 yards and both Dean touchdowns.
Class 3A:
After Mulvane opened the game with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Tab Creekmore to Cole Schmidt, Wichita Collegiate’s Paxon Meares returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans went on to score three more time in the first quarter and eventually cruise to a 42-22 victory over Mulvane. Jacob Chugg returned an interception 85 yards for the final Collegiate touchdown of the first quarter. Quarterback Gabe Fisher passed for 131 yards and two scores and added a touchdown run.
Cade Ross threw three touchdown passes to Zeth Unruh to lift Jefferson West to a 25-7 victory over Hiawatha. Jeff West led 12-0 after three quarters before scoring twice to secure the win. Joe Anderson added a fourth-quarter touchdown run for the Tigers. Hiawatha’s score came on a touchdown pass from Isaac Kaiser to Tyler Brockhoff.
Girard scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ty Norris to Evan Troike with :34 seconds remaining to top Columbus, 23-16. Columbus had just taken a 16-15 lead on a 30-yard screen pass from Patrick Cassidy to Shawn Robinson with 1:12 remaining. This was the first game on the new field turf at Frank Jamison Field in Girard.
Trailing 27-22 late in the game, Royal Valley got a 9-yard touchdown run from Chance Lyming to top Riverside, 28-27. Riverside led 27-14 in the fourth quarter before the Panthers scored twice to come out on top. Dawson Dick rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Riverside.
Chapman beat rival Abilene 26-0 on Friday, stopping a streak of five consecutive wins in one of the nation’s oldest rivalries. Dalton Harvey carried the load for Chapman with 32 carries for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Izek Jackson added 110 yards rushing and a score. Chapman and Abilene have met on the gridiron since 1892 and is believed to be the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi River.
Class 2A:
Norton beat Oakley, 26-24, needing a score with seven seconds left to hold on for the win. The Bluejays were in control virtually all contest before a late Plainsmen run. Norton’s Kade Melvin scored with 7.2 seconds. Norton led 14-7 after the first quarter and 20-10 at halftime. The score remained the same entering the fourth quarter. Oakley tallied 14 points, including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:44 remaining, before the Bluejays’ touchdown. Melvin had a big game with 23 carries for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed eight of 17 passes for 98 yards. For Oakley, senior Kade Hemmert was 14 of 25 for 265 yards with a 2/1 TD/INT ratio.
After a 4-5 mark last season that included a one-point loss to Russell, Southeast of Saline is now 3-0 with a 28-14 win against the Broncos on Friday. The Broncos entered the contest 2-0 for the first time since 2004. Southeast’s Bryant Banks rushed for 156 yards and three TDs. Russell’s opportunistic defense picked off two passes. The Trojans led 21-6 at halftime and 21-14 in the third quarter before adding another TD.
Hutchinson Trinity defeated Ell-Saline, 8-6, and ended the Cardinals’ seven-game Heart of America winning streak. Entering the contest, neither first-team defense had permitted a point. Early in the second half, Isaac Miller scored on a five-yard touchdown run. Kaleb Hammeke scored on the two-point conversion. Ell-Saline scored its only touchdown in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Davenport threw an 86-yard touchdown pass to Treyton Peterson, but the Cardinals’ two-point conversion fell short. Late in the contest, Ell-Saline drove to the Trinity 35-yard line, but the Celtic defense held. Davenport completed 7 of 15 passes for 159 yards with one score against an interception.
Fredonia defeated Leon-Bluestem, 28-14. The Yellowjackets had more than 360 rushing yards. Owen Blandamer delivered 154 rushing yards and Logan Baker had 95 yards.
Class 1A:
La Crosse defeated Republic County in its home opener with a 44-14 victory. Freshman Colby Stull had another big game with 20 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Morgan completed 7 of 9 passes for 108 yards and two scores. La Crosse will play Ellis (0-3) for the first of two meetings this fall.
Uniontown defeated Northeast-Arma, 52-12, for its first victory of the season. The Eagles led by 40 points after three quarters. Northeast-Arma has dropped 24 straight contests. Ty Davidson had a strong game with 10 of 17 passing for 218 yards and four scores. He delivered 85 rushing yards and three rushing TDs. Andrew Reed had 16 rushes for 139 yards and a touchdown, along with 11 tackles and an interception. Hayden Miller caught five passes for 135 yards and a pair of scores. For Northeast, Karter Dugan completed 16 of 32 passes for 194 yards and two scores.
Pleasanton moved to 3-0 with a win against Jayhawk-Linn and took control of the Three Rivers League with a 36-12 victory. The Jayhawks had won 12 in a row in Three Rivers League play. The game was tied at six at halftime. Jayhawk-Linn led 12-6 early in the third quarter. Then, quarterback Kaden McKee passed to his brother Kasen for a score and 14-12 advantage. Later in the game, Kaden McKee had a pick-six. Pleasanton has not won any division of the Three Rivers League (11 or 8-man) since 2008, according to Kansas Football History archives.
Hillsboro used a 20-point second quarter to top Haven, 32-24. The Trojans added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-1 on the season. Hillsboro hosts Sacred Heart this week.
Class 8-man I
Victoria bounced back from a road loss to rival Central Plains and rolled over Macksville, 70-24, in its Homecoming game. Cooper Windholz completed 7 of 9 for 164 yards and five scores, all to Caden Oberle. Jayvon Pruitt delivered 17 carries for 134 yards and a pair of TDs. Victoria led 24-0 before Macksville scored. The Knights led 38-18 at halftime. Victoria opens district play at Lincoln (2-1) this Friday.
Hill City continued to churn out points and defeated Thunder Ridge, 53-6. The Longhorns had opened a surprising 2-0. The Ringnecks (2-1) have tallied 177 points in the first three contests and have a high-profile district-opening home contest versus 3-0 Clifton-Clyde this week. The game ended at halftime as Conner Born had 10 carries for 161 yards and four TDs. Jayce Hamel returned a kickoff 68 yards for a score.
Ness City beat St. John, 54-0. Hector Rodriguez and Angel Guzman each delivered a pair of rushing touchdowns. The game ended at halftime. Three other Eagles had a receiving touchdown.
WaKeeney-Trego defeated Triplains-Brewster, 54-14. Sophomore Kobi Shubert had five total touchdowns. He was 11 of 15 for 147 yards and two score. Dallas Schneider had 18 carries for 170 yards and three touchdowns. The Golden Eagles moved to 2-1.
Spearville (2-1) bounced back after its loss against South Central and defeated Ingalls, 72-44. The Lancers led 26-12 after the first quarter and 48-12 at halftime. Carson Rich rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter from 37 and six yards. In the second quarter, he tossed a 31-yard scoring pass and tallied a four-yard TD run. Albert Evins scored off a 10-yard blocked punt return.
Oswego moved to 3-0 and gets a matchup with undefeated Sedan this week after a 48-16 win versus Altoona-Midway. Oswego led 14-0 after the first quarter and 32-0 at halftime. Three quarterbacks combined for 6 of 16 passing for 117 yards with two scores against one interception in the single wing. Junior Jace Wilson was 2 of 5 passing for 27 yards. He led the rushing attack with 18 carries for 169 yards and two TDs. Overall, Oswego rolled up 35 carries for 230 yards and four touchdowns in the rushing attack.
Class 8-man II
Northern Valley defeated Wheatland-Grinnell, 48-0. The 3-0 Huskies scored 30 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second. Senior Caden Bach finished with nine carries for 154 yards and three scores. Overall, the Huskies had 35 carries for 321 yards and six touchdowns. Northern VAlley has captured eight straight regular season contests.
Pike Valley moved to 2-1 with a 50-0 win versus Southern Cloud and set up a key game with Axtell, ranked fifth in Division II. All of the game’s yards came on the ground. The teams combined for 0 of 3 passing. Pike Valley had 25 carries for 228 yards and six scores. Brody Carlgren had five carries for 24 yards and three touchdowns. Tristyn Garman had eight carries for 107 yards and two scores. Kane Johnson finished with nine carries for 100 yards and a TD. The Panthers limited Southern Cloud to 23 plays for eight yards.
Beloit St. John’s-Tipton defeated Tescott, 55-6. Junior Alex Ketter had 54 yards of offense with a passing score and a rushing score. Senior Kail Dubbert tallied eight carries for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Dubbert and sophomore Timmy Greenwood hauled in receiving scores.
In the big Lincoln County rivalry, Sylvan-Lucas defeated Lincoln, 46-0, in a game that was called at halftime. Before the game, Lincoln held a celebration to honor the updating to Mettner Field. Beau Batchman delivered a 63-yard kickoff return touchdown to the start the game. Then, he had a 65-yard rushing touchdown to bump the lead to 14-0. Batchman added a 30-yard scoring run. Batchman tallied an interception later in the first half. He finished with nine carries for 172 yards and two TDs.
6-Man
A highly anticipated matchup between Pawnee Heights and Cheylin never took place on Friday night. The game between the Tigers and Cougars was cancelled without a makeup date given illness and injuries to the Cheylin team.
Golden Plains outscored Rolla, 67-18, to move to 3-0. Quarterback Jacob Ritter finished a perfect 7 for 7 for 130 yards and a touchdown, while Dylan Spresser rushed for 100 yards and five touchdowns.
KCAA / Other
Wichita Homeschool scored with 15 seconds left to top St. Mary’s Academy, 62-60. The Warriors took over on their own 15-yard line with :34 seconds remaining and scored the winning touchdown with 15 seconds remaining. Junior quarterback Will Day tossed six touchdown passes to lead the Warriors. The win snapped St. Mary’s Academy’s 18-game winning streak.
