Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
After stopping a 21-game losing streak last week with a 29-22 victory over Wichita South, Wichita North went on the road and knocked off the Liberal Redskins, 13-6.
North led 7-0 for most of the game before adding a late score to take a 13-0 lead. A late touchdown pulled Liberal within the final one-score margin. North, which hadn’t won two games in a season since 2009, will not go for a third win next week against Wichita Southeast. The Redskins’ last three-win season came in 2004.
Shawnee Mission South defeated rival Shawnee Mission West, 27-6. The Vikings, which also call Shawnee Mission South Stadium their home, opened the scoring late in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead. SM South would then tie the game at six at halftime. The Raiders would add another touchdown in the third quarter and two more scores in the game’s final four minutes to seal the victory. The Raiders have now won consecutive games for the first time since the 2013 season.
Wichita South rushed for more than 200 yards in a 36-7 victory over Wichita Southeast. The Titans were led on the ground by senior Antwain Scales’ 70 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Sophomore Antoin Alston added 53 yards rushing, while Payton Collins rushed for 35 yards and a score. South quarterback Jashun Grant completed 7 of 10 passes for 112 yards and two score, both of which went to Damion Wells covering a total of 88 yards.
Shawnee Mission East rebounded from a Week 1 loss to Gardner-Edgerton with a 43-13 victory over Lawrence. The Lancers scored on their first five possessions as quarterback Andy Maddox three of his four touchdowns passes in the first half. East kicker Parker Willis kicked two of his three field goals and Tyler Stottle returned an interception for a touchdown as part of the Lancers’ 33-0 halftime lead. Maddox passed for 136 yards and four scores, including two to Deonte Carroll.
Class 5A:
KC Washington opened their home schedule with a 29-0 shutout of KC Harmon behind a big performance from quarterback Alex Howard. Howard completed 3 of 7 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown, and rushed 24 times for 121 yards and three more scores. The Wildcats led 6-0 after one quarter and scored 14 points in the second quarter to build a 20-0 halftime lead. Washington then added nine points in the final quarter to provide the final margin. The Wildcats have now beaten Harmon three straight seasons.
After a close loss against Washburn Rural, Emporia bounced back with a 56-7 win versus Topeka West. Spencer Stewart had multiple big plays, including an 86-yard kickoff return for a score and a 25-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-5. Beau Baumgardner had a 30-yard interception return for a TD. Emporia’s defense permitted just two first downs. Emporia led 28-0 at halftime.
Great Bend defeated Hays, 15-7, in the longtime WAC rivalry. The Panthers outgained Hays, 274-263, with a 205-85 advantage in the second half. Hays High drove to the Panthers’ 28-yard line but couldn’t convert a Hail Mary at the end of the game. For the Panthers, Dalton Miller had a 46-yard TD run in the third quarter. Later, Great Bend moved the lead to 15-7 on a 25-yard field goal from Dani Franco.
Lansing defeated Basehor-Linwood, 14-13. Dylan Mussett completed 11 of 23 passes for 105 yards with a rushing touchdown, a passing score and an interception for Basehor-Linwood. Also for the Bobcats, Marlon McDaniel delivered 17 carries for 127 yards. Basehor-Linwood outgained Lansing 283-173. Lansing junior quarterback Luke Schneider delivered 12 carries for 36 yards and two TDs. The Lions had dropped four straight and eight of their last nine to the Bobcats.
Valley Center scored in each quarter as part of a 41-20 victory over Garden City. The Hornets let 27-14 at halftime and kept the pressure on with touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters. Senior back Larry Wilson led Valley Center with 151 rushing yards and two scores on 17 attempts. Parker Schrater passed for 309 yards and three scores. Zach Williams caught four passes for 129 yards and a score. Garden City was led by Holcomb-transfer Reece Morss who rushed for 140 yards on 21 carries.
Class 4A:
After a big season-opening loss to Pittsburg in a battle of ranked teams, Labette County defeated Independence, 36-0. On a muddy field, Easton Dean completed 8 of 18 passes for 181 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Chase Evans delivered nine carries for 44 yards and a score. Nathan Smith recorded four catches for 133 yards and two scores. Labette County led 22-0 at halftime and limited Independence to eight passing yards overall.
Louisburg beat Tonganoxie, 27-7, after 12 points in the first quarter. Louisburg had a 51-39 edge in plays and 14-7 in first downs. Tonganoxie senior quarterback Hayden Robbins completed 7 of 10 passes for 124 yards with a 1/1 TD/INT ratio. Sophomore Dallas Bond delivered a 74-yard run for his only carry.
After a 41-0 season-opening loss against Paola, Bonner Springs defeated Eudora, 40-0. The Braves tallied 407 yards, including 333 rushing and finished 9 of 11 on third down. This marked the first matchup between the two teams since Bonner Springs beat Eudora, 28-14, in ’15.
Mulvane rebounded from a Week 1 loss to Andale with a 42-14 victory over Clearwater. The Wildcats built a 14-0 lead after one quarter on a pair of Tab Creekmore touchdown runs. Creekmore added a touchdown pass to Jacob Walker late in the second quarter for a 28-7 halftime lead. Creekmore passed for 113 yards the night, while the Mulvane offense was led on the ground by Cole Diffenbaugh’s 146 rushing yards and two scores. Clearwater managed just 45 rush yards on 30 attempts on the night.
Class 3A:
Concordia beat Abilene, 14-6, on a muddy field in North Central Kansas League play. Abilene had 38 carries for 239 yards, while Concordia recorded 33 carries for 117 yards. The game was scoreless until 3 minutes, 37 seconds left in the third quarter when Concordia defensive back Wyatt Trost recorded a 30-yard interception return for a score. Then, Abilene closed to 8-6 on an 80-yard run by Jackson Randle but missed the two-point conversion. Concordia scored the game’s final touchdown with 32.6 seconds left on a 1-yard run from Hunter Schroeder. Abilene drove to the Concordia 38-yard line but its final pass was intercepted.
Smoky Valley defeated Haven, 44-0, on the road. The Vikings outgained Haven, 366-13. Tim Lambert Jr. opened the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown run. He added a 30-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead. Overall, he finished with eight carries for 136 yards. Quarterback Lane Schrag tallied six carries for 97 yards. All of the scoring was done by early in the third quarter.
Marysville started the season with a loss to Chapman and then recovered with a 30-6 win at Clay Center. The Bulldogs led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs converted four of five fourth-down conversions. Brandon Schroedl completed 5 of 10 passes for 135 yards and three scores. Marysville had a 298-262 edge in total yards.
Caney Valley picked up its second win of the season with a 41-0 shutout of Eureka. The Bullpups rushed for more than 340 yards on the night led by Matthew Simpson who totaled 124 yards and scored a touchdown. Cole Ellis rushed for 75 yards and two scores and Brendon Buoy rushed for a score and caught a touchdown pass from Trey Richey. Richey passed for 92 yards on the night, and added 78 yards rushing.
Class 2A:
Cimarron defeated Meade, 44-6, in Hi-Plains action. The Bluejays led 16-0 at halftime, and then outscored Meade, 22-6, in the third quarter. Sophomore Tate Seabolt had 26 carries for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Overall, Cimarron rushed 43 times for 431 yards and five scores.
Minneapolis defeated Sacred Heart, 20-17, in overtime. Junior Derek Freel threw the winning touchdown pass to junior Kaden Griffin. Minneapolis led 14-0 early in the second quarter. However, Sacred Heart tied the game at 14 mid-way through the third quarter, and the game went to overtime with the same score. Sacred Heart took a 17-14 lead on a 24-yard field goal from Kobe Douglas. Minneapolis then scored on the first play of overtime. Minneapolis had just three wins in the previous two seasons, though is 2-0 to start this fall. Minneapolis outgained Sacred Heart, 302-241.
Southeast of Saline, a 4-5 team last fall, has opened 2-0 after a 14-13 win against Beloit. The Trojans had the only points in the first half on a safety. Beloit led 7-2 entering the fourth quarter. Then, Southeast of Saline scored twice at the 10:23 and 6:39 marks of the fourth quarter to grab the lead. Sophomore Jaxson Gebhardt completed 11 of 21 passes for 135 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. Southeast of Saline lost 35-14 to Beloit last year.
Maur Hill-Mount Academy captured its second straight win with a 48-0 win against Oskaloosa. Junior quarterback Jack Caudle rushed four times for 64 yards and a score, and passed completed 7 of 10 passes for 138 yards with a TD. Overall, Maur Hill went 8 of 13 for 189 yards with two scores, and rushed 24 times for 274 yards and five TDs, one each by five different players. Senior running back James Steichen had 85 rushing yards and a score. The Junior Ravens gets a key home game against Jackson Heights this week.
Osage City earned a big win against Lyndon, 41-0, and has not permitted a point through the first two weeks. Osage City had dropped eight straight to the Tigers. Last year, Lyndon defeated the Indians, 30-17, to clinch the Flint Hills League crown.
Humboldt defeated Fredonia, 42-7, in Tri-Valley League action in a game moved to Saturday and moved locations to Humboldt because of heavy rains. Dagen Goodner finished with 168 passing and 74 rushing yards. He rushed for three scores and passed for two. Conor Haviland rushed for 88 with a pair of scores and tallied 52 receiving yards. Taylor Lassman recorded a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
Thomas More Prep-Marian captured the first win of the David Bowen era and defeated county rival Ellis, 14-7, at Fort Hays’ Lewis Field Stadium. Ellis has battled injuries, namely to starting sophomore running back Konnor Pfeifer. Kaleb Hagans, one of the state’s leading tacklers last year and a former lineman, moved to the backfield. He delivered 28 carries for 166 yards and a score. TMP led 6-0 with 25 seconds left in the first half when Carson Jacobs threw a TD pass on 4th-and-11. Ellis had the ball at midfield with under a minute left, but TMP’s defense held strong. TMP moved to 3-2 against Ellis since the matchup resumed five years ago.
Class 1A:
Jackson Heights defeated Atchison County, 38-0, with all the points in the second half. Jackson Heights scored 30 points in the third quarter. Junior Cooper Williams had three rushing scores of 60, 90 and 53 yards. The Cobras have opened with a total score of 80-0. Jackson Height’s schedule is expected to get much more challenging the next several weeks, starting with a game at Maur Hill and against Olpe. Both of those upcoming opponents are currently 2-0.
Troy opened 1-4 last season en route to a 4-5 mark. This year, the Trojans have opened 2-0 and permitted just 12 points after an 18-0 muddy victory at Pleasant Ridge. Troy scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters.
Sedgwick won 52-14 at Wichita Independent in its first of three straight road games. Senior quarterback Hooper Schroeder cleared 500 passing yards in the opener and threw for 353 yards with seven TDs accounted for (four passing, three rushing).
Pleasanton moved to 2-0 with an 8-0 victory against Southeast-Cherokee. The game was moved to Pleasanton because of issues with Southeast’s facility. The Blu-Jays scored on the contest’s first play from scrimmage when Ben Hockman tallied a score off a double move. Both squads struggled in a wet, muddy field due to heavy rains the previous two days. Pleasanton had several drops that likely would have been scores.
Class 8-man I
Hill City delivered a 48-18 win against WaKeeney-Trego. Both teams moved to 1-1. WaKeeney opened the scoring before Hill City rattled off four straight touchdowns and led 24-12 at halftime. Dalen Journigan had a 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and rushed for 147 yards with a pair of TDs. Connor Born went over 300 yards in Week 1, and had 161 passing yards, 95 rushing and accounted for three TDs last week.
Madison moved to 2-0 with a 20-0 victory against Waverly. It marked the first time Waverly had been shutout since 2013 when the Bulldogs didn’t score in a playoff loss to Baileyville B&B. Madison scored six points in the first quarter and 14 in the third. Nasun Wasson had two scoring runs of 21 and five yards.
Bennington held off Moundridge, 28-22, in a game featuring the only two 8-Man teams from the Heart of America League. The Bulldogs held leads of 12-0 and 20-8 before Moundridge rallied to go ahead 22-20 on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns by Daniel Kaufman. The Bulldogs then pushed across the winning score in the final four minutes. Most of the scoring came in the second half as Bennington broke the scoreless tie with a Tyler Stanley touchdown run late in the first half to lead 6-0 at the break. Javon Allen then returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown to put Bennington up 12-0.
In its first year of eight-man football, Oswego moved to 2-0 with new coach Matt Fowler. The Indians defeated Marmaton Valley, 30-22, after a 24-6 halftime lead. Junior Jace Wilson had another big game with 27 carries for 205 yards and three scores. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 48 yards. Oswego outgained the Wildcats 361-284 and had 55 plays, 16 more than Marmaton Valley.
Sedan moved to 2-0 with a 54-6 win at Oxford. The game was tied at six after the first quarter. Then, Sedan tallied 12 points in the second, 16 in the third and 20 in the fourth. Tayte Halderman had a 55-yard touchdown run, and TD passes of five, 10 and 20 yards. Cody Joslin recorded a receiving and rushing TD.
Class 8-man II
Northern Valley defeated Triplains-Brewster, 62-22. The Huskies have scored 112 points in the first two weeks. Nick Stutsman continued his solid play in his first year as the starting quarterback. He delivered 16 carries for 138 yards and two scores, and passed for 78 yards and a TD.
Axtell had another huge offensive output with a 64-12 win against Blue Valley Randolph, which forfeited its Week 1 contest versus Mankato-Rock Hills. Hunter Koch accounted for five receiving scores from Quinn Buessing, who tossed six touchdowns. Koch has 10 touchdown receptions in two contests. Axtell ended the game at halftime after a 30-6 margin in the first quarter and 34-6 in the second quarter.
Thunder Ridge alum Joel Struckhoff, eight-man’s record holder in career rushing yards, touchdowns and points, has enjoyed great success in his first year as head coach. The Longhorns have opened 2-0 after just three wins in the last three years, including a 2-7 mark last season. Thunder Ridge defeated Washington County, 12-0, with all the points coming in the second quarter. The Longhorns have outscored teams 80-0 in back-to-back road contests. Landon Gering scored both touchdowns on a five-yard run and a 30-yard reception.
Logan-Palco bounced back after a Week 1 loss and defeated Wheatland-Grinnell, 50-18. Micah Thompson paced the Trojans with 12 carries for 126 yards and three scores. Logan White and Cody Brown each had a rushing touchdown.
6-Man
Pawnee Heights extended its win streak to 11 games with a 39-37 victory over Weskan. The Tigers led 20-0 early before Weskan scored two consecutive touchdowns to get within 20-12. Another Tiger touchdown pushed the lead to 26-12 before Weskan pulled to within 26-19 at halftime. The Coyotes got as close as 26-25 in the third quarter before Pawnee Heights answered. The lead never reached double digits again in the second half. Pawnee Heights (2017) and Weksan (2016) are the first two winners of the Wild West Bowl – the 6-Man State Championship.
Cheylin sophomore quarterback Colton McCarty accounted for six total touchdowns in the Cougars 74-43 victory over Rolla. McCarty rushed for 254 yards and six touchdowns on 26 attempts and added 130 yards through the air including four more scores.
KCAA / Other
Wichita Homeschool rolled to a 59-8 victory over Cair Paravel. Junior Luke Johnson rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries to lead the Warriors. Will Day passed for 107 yards and three more scores, one of which went to Johnson.
