Week Two action saw only five of the 40 teams ranked the Kpreps poll fall on Friday night. No classification had more than one ranked team lose last week. So, while you would expect a lot of movement in the Kpreps Rankings for Week 3, let’s find out how our voters have arranged this week’s poll.
Class 6A
Another week, another Derby blowout victory. The Panthers raced out to a 55-0 halftime lead in beating Salina Central on Friday. The Panthers have now outscored their opponents in the first half this season 97-0. Derby hits the road for the first time this season when the Panthers travel to Newton.
Lawrence Free State produced its second consecutive 41-0 shutout of an Olathe school this season. The Firebirds counteracted the wet conditions by rushing for more than 320 yards against Olathe East on Friday. This week, Free State travels to Shawnee Mission North.
In a battle between the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in last week’s poll, Blue Valley outscored Blue Valley North 25-6 in the second half en route to a 31-20 victory. The Tigers got big games from quarterback Walker Kinney (276 yards passing, 2 TDs) and Eric Olson (170 yards rushing, 2 TDs) in erasing an 11-point first-half deficit. This week, Blue Valley takes on Blue Valley Southwest in sort of a home game for both teams. The Tigers and Timberwolves share the field at Blue Valley High School.
Olathe North moves up one spot to No. 4 this week after a 55-27 victory over Shawnee Mission North. The Eagles backfield duo of Daymonn Sanchez and Arland Bruce IV combined to rush for 280 yards and five touchdowns.
Finally, Manhattan enters the poll at No. 5 this week after surviving a controversial 21-20, overtime victory over Topeka High. The Indians trailed for much of the game, but scored in the fourth quarter on an Isiah Childs touchdown run to tie the game at 14 and force overtime. In OT, Childs scored from 10-yards out to put the Indians up 21-14. Topeka responded with a touchdown and decided to go for two and the win. The Trojans Ky Thomas reversed field and dived into the end zone by the right pylon, but was ruled to be down just short of the goal line sending the Manhattan sideline into celebration.
Class 5A
Wichita Northwest remains in the top spot after rolling to a 56-0 victory over Wichita East on Thursday night. The Grizzlies will now host Great Bend (2-0) in a series that has featured a pair of recent high scoring games. Great Bend won the 2016 meeting 58-47 before Northwest pulled away for a 63-27 victory last season.
St. Thomas Aquinas rolled to a 49-8 victory over Blue Valley Southwest on Friday. After rushing for 256 yards and two scores in Week 1, sophomore Tank Young added 151 yards and three more scores to his season total. Aquinas travels to Blue Valley Northwest this week.
Third-ranked Bishop Carroll contained Wichita Heights’ quarterback K’Vontae Baker for a second consecutive season in beating the Falcons, 36-20. Jackson Nichols scored three times for the Golden Eagles.
Fourth-ranked Mill Valley rallied for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to top St. James Academy, 14-13. Jordan Preston’s touchdowns pass to Jayce Zukowski with 90 seconds remaining tied the game and Jack Matchette added the PAT for the 1-point win.
Finally, Maize traveled to Hutchinson and blitzed the Salthawks 49-0. It was the Eagles second consecutive 49-0 victory to open the season. Caleb Grill and company will get a big test this week when they travel to Haysville to take on the Campus Colts (2-0).
Class 4A
Bishop Miege rolled to a 49-7 victory over Blue Valley West as quarterback Sam Pedrotti settled in with a solid performance. Pedrotti, missing all-state wide receiver Daniel Jackson, passed for 175 yards and two scores completing 16 of 21 attempts. Brison Cobbins nearly broke 200 yards rushing for a second straight game in going for 190 and two scores against the Jaguars.
McPherson remains in the No. 2 spot after a 47-7 victory at Winfield. Quarterback Kyler Hoppes threw three touchdown passes and Jace Kinnamon scored three times on the ground for the Bullpups.
The rest of the teams in the top five posted shutouts last week. Third-ranked Pittsburg scored 26 points in each half in blanking Chanute, 52-0. Goddard held Ark City to 26 yards of total offense as part of a 34-0 win, and Paola blanked Fort Scott 42-0. All three teams will be at home this week highlighted by Pittsburg’s home matchup with Blue Valley North.
Class 3A
Andale traveled to Wellington and shutout coach Dylan Schmidt’s former team, 28-0. The Indians will be favorites again this week when they play at home for the first time this season against Rose Hill.
Second-ranked Sabetha rolled to a ninth consecutive victory by blasting Riverside, 55-0. The Blue Jays will get a test this week as they host No. 5 Perry-Lecompton in a Big 7 Conference showdown.
Scott City remains in the No. 3 spot after an impressive 24-0 shutout over Holcomb. The Beavers held the defending Class 4A, Division II state champions to 43 yards of total offense in the victory.
Pratt holds on to No. 4 spot this week after doubling-up Central Kansas League rival Halstead, 32-16. The grueling CKL schedule continues this week as the Greenbacks travel to unbeaten Hesston.
Finally, Perry-Lecompton replaces Topeka Hayden in the No. 5 spot this week after Hayden’s 13-0 loss to rival Topeka Seaman. Perry-Lecompton earned the spot with a 46-0 shutout of traditional-power Holton. Kaw quarterback Dalton Kellum rushed for 230 yards in the victory. Perry-Lecompton travels to No. 2 Sabetha this week in one of the state’s top games.
Class 2A
The voting atop the Class 2A poll has been the closest of any other classification. For now, Phillipsburg continues to barely edge out Conway Springs for the top spot. The Panthers rolled to a 31-3 victory over a Plainville team that was ranked in Class 1A last week. Phillipsburg gets an even bigger test this week when the Panthers visit 1A No. 1 Smith Center.
Conway Springs kept the pressure on Phillipsburg with a 28-7 victory over Cheney on Friday. The Cardinals will host new Central Plains League member Kingman this week.
Silver Lake held off rival Rossville 17-14 in the “War on 24” on Friday night. The Eagles led by ten in the second half before Rossville scored, and recovered a Silver Lake fumble. Eventually Rossville missed a 30-yard field goal that would have tied the game. Silver Lake will host a good Riley County team this week.
Garden Plain stays at No. 4 this week after a 31-0 shutout of Douglass. Fellow Central Plains League member Chaparral stays in the No. 5 spot after a 49-7 victory over Wichita Trinity. Chaparral travels to Cheney this week.
Class 1A
Smith Center rolled to another shutout in defeating Mid-Continent League rival Norton, 40-0. The Redmen may get their biggest test of the season this week when they host 2A No. 1 Phillipsburg. Phillipsburg has beaten Smith Center seven straight times including 23-0 last season.
Colgan won the Black & Blue Bowl over rival Frontenac for a second consecutive season. The Panthers grinded out a 14-0 victory in the wet, muddy conditions despite only attempting one pass. Colgan held a 7-0 lead late in the first half when quarterback Cade Simmons broke an 81-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds remaining.
Elkhart remains in the No. 3 spot after rolling past Southwestern Heights, 45-14. The Wildcats will now take on Sublette; a team struggling in the midst of a 25-game losing streak.
Olpe moves up a spot in this week’s poll to No. 4. The Eagles rolled to a 31-0 victory over Burlington and have posted a pair of shutouts to open the season. Olpe replaces last week’s No. 4 Plainville, which dropped a 31-3 decision to 2A No. 1 Phillipsburg.
Finally, Ell-Saline enters the poll this week after a dominating 48-6 win over struggling Whitewater-Remington. The Cardinals are led by standout quarterback Nick Davenport who passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores in the victory.
Class 8M-I
In Class 8-Man, Division I, defending champion Hoxie scored 24 consecutive points to close out a 52-20 victory over then 8-Man, Division II No. 2 Osborne. The Indians led 28-20 in the third quarter when Jared Kennedy’s touchdown pass put his team up two scores. The Indian defense slowed Osborne quarterback Darnell Holloway to 18 rush yards on eight attempts after he rushed for 356 yards in Week 1.
Central Plains used a strong defensive performance to win the Central Prairie League battle over then No. 3 ranked Victoria, 32-8. The Oilers held Victoria to just over 100 yards of total offense. Central Plains will take on Kinsley this week. The Coyotes snapped a 22-game losing streak on Friday with a victory over St. John.
Hodgeman County moves up a spot to No. 3 this week after a solid 36-24 road-victory over Medicine Lodge. The Longhorns led 28-8 in the game before Medicine Lodge pulled to within 28-24. Hodgeman County added a fourth-quarter touchdown to go up two scores and secure the win.
South Central leaps into the poll at No. 4 this week after an impressive 24-8 win over Spearville. The win by the T-wolves marks Spearville’s first regular-season loss since 2013. South Central will travel to No. 3 Hodgeman County this week. Last season, Hodgeman County pulled out a 30-27 victory at Coldwater.
Finally, Solomon remains at No. 5 in the poll after rolling to a 54-6 victory over Wakefield. The Gorillas should get a test this week as they host new 8-Man member, Moundridge.
Class 8M-II
Hanover won its 27th straight game by dominating new 8-Man member Doniphan West, 52-6. The Wildcats will not host No. 2 Mankato-Rock Hills in one of the state’s top games.
Mankato-Rock Hills moves up a spot to No. 2 this week after picking up its first victory on the field. Remember that the Grizzlies were awarded a forfeit victory in Week 1 when Blue Valley Randolph didn’t want to risk injury to their 9-player roster. Rock Hills got on the field in Week 2 and rolled past Lakeside-Downs, 52-0. Rock Hills will travel to No. 1 Hanover this week.
Osborne falls just one spot to No. 3 in this week’s poll after Friday’s 52-20 loss to Division I top-ranked Hoxie. The Bulldogs will try and rebound with a home date with Stockton this week.
South Barber stays in the No. 4 spot this week after a 50-0 shutout of Fairfield. The Chieftains will host Hutchinson Central Christian this week.
Finally, Otis-Bison narrowly edges out Axtell for the No. 5 spot in this week’s poll. The Cougars rebounded from their Week 1 loss to Victoria with a 50-0 blanking of Bucklin to open district play. Otis-Bison has a key district matchup with Stafford (2-0) this week.
