Playoff brackets for 6A & 5A now set
The first eight weeks of the regular season are now complete and Class 6A and Class 5A has reached the single-elimination bracket round.

Let’s take a look at some of the most significant results from Friday night.
Top-ranked Pratt goes down at Holcomb
Defending Class 4A-II champion Pratt saw its 15-game winning streak come to an end at No. 4 Holcomb on Friday night.
Trey Gilbert’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Chance Rodriguez mid-way through the fourth quarter provided the winning points for the Longhorns.
After Pratt grabbed a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a Travis Theis touchdown run, Holcomb responded with two touchdowns in the final 1:35 before halftime. Gilbert hit Carter Blackburn on a 14-yard touchdown pass, then after a Pratt punt and a penalty, Gilbert hit Andrew Morss on a 17-yard strike in the final 15 seconds before halftime.
The Longhorns led 13-7 until Pratt quarterback Landen Studer broke a 45-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to put the Greenbacks up by one.
Theis led Pratt with 169 of the Greenback’s 301 rush yards. Meanwhile, Gilbert passed for 232 yards and three scores for the Longhorns.
Last season it was Pratt that upset the Longhorns, 35-28, ending Holcomb’s 16-game win streak. Holcomb was the defending Class 4A, Division II champions at the time, and the No. 1 ranked team in the classification.
Bishop Miege wins the No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown, 31-0 over De Soto
Bishop Miege won the battle of top-ranked teams in Class 4A, Division I, beating No. 2 De Soto, 31-0 on Friday night.
Sophomore receiver Daniel Jackson caught three touchdown passes to lead the Stag offense.
Miege grabbed a 7-0 lead mid-way through the first quarter on a Carter Putz 17-yard touchdown pass to Jackson. A.J. Brady’s field goal extended the lead to 10-0 in the second quarter.
Putz provided the separation late in the second quarter, going untouched on a 73-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 lead.
The score remained 17-0 until the fourth quarter when Putz hit Jackson for another 17-yard touchdown following a short De Soto punt.
Sophomore running back Brison Cobbins then hit Jackson for a touchdown pass out of the “Wildcat” formation to provide the final points for Miege.
Hayden shuts out Holton in second half to win 27-13
Topeka Hayden shut out Holton in the second half to claim a 27-13 win and the District 1 title in Class 4A, Division II.
Holton led 13-7 at halftime thanks to touchdown runs from A.J. Haussler and Dylan Aeschliman. Meanwhile, Hayden’s offense struggled in the “red zone” in coming away empty on four trips thanks to an interception and three failed fourth-down conversions.
Brent Peavler’s short touchdown run in the third quarter gave Hayden a 14-13 lead.
Shortly after, DeShawn Hanika broke a short pass from Sampson Huston for an 85-yard touchdown
Hanika later added another score from Huston as part of his 211-yard, two-touchdown receiving night.
Carroll wins “Holy War” over Kapaun, 30-22
Bishop Carroll scored nine points in the fourth quarter to top rival Kapaun Mount Carmel, 30-22, for a 20th consecutive victory in the series.
Kapaun jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a pair of Preston Williams field goals and a long touchdown pass from Jack Hacking to Mark Hutton.
Carroll would respond with 21 points in the second quarter to take the lead at halftime.
Braden Howell threw touchdown passes to Clay Cundiff , Desmond Smith, and Thomas Helten to rally the Eagles.
But in the third quarter, the Crusaders would force a safety and get a touchdown pass from Hacking to Jacob Schmitz to put Kapaun up 22-21.
Carroll would respond with Howell’s fourth touchdown pass of the night, this one to Cade Becker to give the Eagles a 27-22 lead. Bishop Carroll would later add a field goal for the eight-point advantage.
Free State remains unbeaten, 24-21 over rival Lawrence
Lawrence Free State junior kicker Kameron Lake connected on a 28-yard field goal with one second remaining as the Firebirds beat rival Lawrence, 24-21.
Free State seemed in control holding a 21-7 lead over the Lions entering the fourth quarter. But Lawrence, pulled closer thanks to a Dante Jackson touchdown pass to Jalen Dudley and a 44-yard scoring run by Jackson.
Jax Dineen once again led the Firebird offense in rushing. Dineen finished with 183 yards on 23 carries, while quarterback Gage Foster added 142 yards and two scores on 19 attempts.
Jackson led Lawrence with 160 yards rushing and a touchdown, while passing for 71 yards and another score.
Lake also kicked an eventual game-winning field goal last season in the 6A playoffs, propelling the Firebirds past Washburn Rural, 17-14.
Nickerson uses big fourth quarter to drill Collegiate, 48-14
Nickerson scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Wichita Collegiate, 48-14. It was just the second time in school history that Nickerson has defeated Collegiate in football.
Nickerson led 14-7 at halftime and 21-14 after three quarters.
Quarterback Tanner Schrag broke a 40-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for a 28-14 lead. After holding Collegiate on downs, Peyton Kuhns scored from 35 yards away to push the lead to 35-14.
Schrag would then ice the game by picking up a Collegiate fumble and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown.
Nickerson rushed for nearly 500 yards in the game. Kuhns led the way with 200 yards, while Schrag added more than 180 on the ground.
Frontenac upsets Columbus, 20-8
Frontenac knocked off Columbus, 20-8 on Friday night behind a strong defensive performance.
The Raiders scored on their opening drive culminating in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Brown to Broc Ginavan.
Frontenac would then expand the lead to 14-0 by halftime thanks to a Jake Wilbert touchdown run.
Columbus finally go on the board with 3:24 remaining in the game on a swing pass to Keenan Stanley. The Titans converted the two-point conversion to pull within 14-8.
Frontenac was unable to grind out the clock and had to punt back to Columbus. The Titans chance at taking the lead ended when Brendan Ishimura intercepted an overthrown Columbus pass. Wilbert went 60-yards to the house on the next play to seal the game for the Raiders.
Aquinas defeats Blue Valley, 47-20
St. Thomas Aquinas used a barrage of points late in the second quarter to roll past Blue Valley, 47-20.
The Saints led 21-6 in the second quarter before a Tristan Davis touchdown run with 4:47 left until halftime extended the lead to 22 points.
Shortly after, Cameron Jackson broke a 97-yard touchdown run to put the Saints up 34-6.
Blue Valley would score on a touchdown pass with 1:25 left in the first half, but Aquinas would respond as quarterback Will Swanson would add his third rushing touchdown for a 40-13 halftime lead.
Chaparral uses defense, special team scores to beat Garden Plain
After a loss to Cheney last week, Chaparral got back into the Class 3A, District 10 race with an 18-14 victory over Garden Plain. The Roadrunners defeated the Owls despite scoring only one offensive touchdown on the night.
Chaparral took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after blocking a Garden Plain punt that was recovered by Jaden Eslinger for a Runner touchdown. Less than a minute later, Garden Plain drew even on a Nick Dooley touchdown run.
Matt Pauly put the Owls up 14-6 at halftime with a short touchdown run and two-point conversion.
In the third quarter, Chaparral got a nine-yard touchdown run from Jake Burke, but the two-point attempt was no good leaving Garden Plain in the lead, 14-12.
Chaparral’s defense would put the ‘Runners back on top as Iverson Bello intercepted Garden Plain’s Matt Pauley and returned it for a touchdown and an 18-14 lead and, what would ultimately be the game-winning score.
The Roadrunner defense forced four Garden Plain turnovers on the night.
Conway Springs wins battle of unbeatens over Cheney, 41-0
Conway Springs won the latest unbeaten showdown in Class 3A, District 10 with a 41-0 shutout of Cheney. The victory assures the Cardinals one of the two playoff spots out of District 10 where the four teams entered Week 7 with a combined 23-1 record.
On Friday, Conway Springs led 14-0 at halftime thanks to touchdown runs from Trenton Jones and Colton Terhune. The Cardinal defense also came up big in denying Cheney on four attempts inside the Conway 10-yard line.
The Cardinals came out of the halftime lock room with a Jones touchdown to cap a 60-yard drive and extend the lead to 20-0. Terhune added another score in the third quarter as Conway Springs pulled away.
Jones rushed for three touchdowns, while Terhune added two more scores for Conway Springs.
Maize holds off Hutchinson, 14-13
Maize jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter and held on to beat Hutchinson, 14-13.
Dalyn Johnson rushed for 118 yards and both Eagle touchdowns in the first quarter. Hutchinson had closed the gap to within 14-7 at halftime on a short touchdown run by Trevor Rhoades.
Brody Smith scored mid-way through the fourth quarter, but the extra point hit the upright leaving Hutchinson still chasing a point, down 14-13.
But the Salthawks ultimately couldn’t overcome four turnovers in the game including a Maize interception that sealed the victory for the Eagles.
Fort Scott’s two-point stop beats Paola
Fort Scott clinched the 4A-I, District 3 title with a 27-26 win at Paola thanks to a late stop on a two-point conversion attempt.
The Panthers scored on a 1-yard run from Colton Gleghorn with 26 seconds remaining in the game, and decided to go for the win instead of kicking the extra point to tie.
Fort Scott’s Zarek Fewell tackled the Panther ball carrier short of the goal line preserving the one-point Tiger win and the district title.
The game was tied at 20 in the fourth quarter when Fort Scott’s Jesse Jones connected with Matt Campbell on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 3:23 remaining.
Fewell also led the Tigers on offense with 189 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Paola was led by Gleghorn’s game-high 190 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
Silver Lake beats Perry-Lecompton 40-35
Silver Lake escaped another close matchup with Perry-Lecompton, defeating the Kaws 40-35 on Friday night.
Perry-Lecompton grabbed an early 14-0 lead before the two teams went into the locker room tied at 21 at halftime.
Silver Lake exploded for three consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 40-21 lead, part of a string of 33 consecutive points scored by the Eagles in the game. Mason Griffin threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another score during the barrage.
Perry-Lecompton would respond, however, with a pair of touchdowns to close the gap. Colton Mallonee returned the ensuing kickoff from Silver Lake’s final touchdown 97 yards for a score.
Later Shane Quinlan hauled in a long touchdown pass from Dalton Kellum to pull the Kaws within 40-35, but they could get no closer.
Silver Lake had won the past two meetings over Perry-Lecompton 21-19 last season, and 39-38 in overtime in 2015.
Salina South wins Mayor’s Cup
In Class 5A, Salina South held off Salina Central, 38-14, to win the seventh straight Mayor’s Cup. South moved to 2-6, while Salina Central is 0-8.
Casey Lanoue had 18 carries for 126 yards and two scores, and completed 6 of 12 passes for 70 yards. Senior Tanner Parret had 138 rushing yards and two scores. South led 17-0 at the break.
The Mustangs have lost 17 straight contests.
Price leads Mulvane
In Class 4A-I, District 5 play, Mulvane (5-3, 2-0) locked up the district title with a 35-7 win at Wellington on the Crusaders’ Homecoming. Mulvane standout quarterback Jayden Price, a North Dakota State commit who has been banged up this season, ran for 145 yards and passed for 60. He had four rushing scores, including a key 61-yard burst in the fourth quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.
Plainville wins fifth straight
In Class 2-1A, District 7 play, Plainville defeated Ellis 47-14 on the road for its fifth straight victory. Plainville (5-3, 2-0) and La Crosse (6-2, 2-0) have clinched the two district positions entering their game next week. The Cardinals led 21-7 at halftime and 27-14 with 8:27 left in the third quarter after Ellis scored. Plainville scored the game’s final 20 points.
Undefeated Ell-Saline narrowly wins again
For the second straight week, Ell-Saline narrowly escaped an upset in Class 2-1A, District 6 action. The Cardinals needed to score late to pull away from winless Republic County in Week 7. On Friday, Ell-Saline trailed one-win Sacred Heart late in the second half before a 28-21 road win.
Junior quarterback Nick Davenport had 81 passing and 111 rushing yards. Ell-Saline took its first lead with an 11-yard run with1:48 left to play. Sacred Heart reached the 13-yard line before time ran out.
The Cardinals tallied 21 unanswered points for the victory. E-S (7-0) will play host to No. 1-ranked Smith Center (7-1) for the district title. Smith Center defeated Sacred Heart 78-0 last week.
Ness City scores 52 straight in comeback win
In a wild game, Ness City scored 52 unanswered points and defeated Satanta, 80-50, in Eight-Man, Division I, District 7 action. Satanta led 28-6 before the Eagles scored 22 unanswered points and tied the game at 28 at halftime. Ness City, helped by a pick-six, moved the score to 58-28 in the third quarter.
Spearville has won the district, while Satanta, Ness City and South Gray are in close competition for the runner-up slot. South Gray is 7-1, 3-1, Ness City is 4-4, 2-2 and Satanta has dropped two straight after a 6-0 start. South Gray will play host to Satanta next week after a 32-24 win against Ness City earlier this season.
Caldwell, Central Christian win to set up undefeated Week 9 matchup
Caldwell (8-0, 4-0) earned a 69-6 win against South Haven and will match up against Hutchinson Central Christian (8-0, 4-0) for the two playoff berths in Eight-Man, Division II, District 2 next week. Caldwell led 49-0 at the end of the first quarter.
