Let’s take a look at several of the outcomes that caught our attention from Friday night.
Derby scores late to put away Carroll, 54-45
Derby got a late turnover and touchdown to hold off Bishop Carroll, 54-45 in a matchup of the No. 3 teams in Class 6A and Class 5A.
Grant Adler and Brody Kooser each rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Panthers built a 26-10 lead early in the second quarter.
Carroll would respond on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Braden Howell to Joseph Holthusen to pull within 26-17, but Adler’s third touchdown quickly extended the Derby lead to 33-17. Carroll would add another Howell touchdown pass before half to trail 33-24.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter before Howell hit Holthusen again to pull the Eagles within 47-45 with five minutes left.
Carroll’s defense then forced a Derby punt, but Hunter Igo forced a Howell fumble on Carroll’s ensuing possession giving the ball back to the Panthers.
Shortly after, Adler would add his fourth touchdown run to seal the win.
Adler rushed for 160 yards and four touchdowns, while Kooser added 154 yards and two scores.
Howell led Bishop Carroll in throwing for 472 yards and four touchdowns, but the Eagles were held to 51 rush yards on 32 attempts.
Silver Lake wins the “War” in a defensive struggle
Silver Lake defeated rival Rossville 14-0 in a defensive struggle in the “War on 24”.
Mason Jones rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns for Silver Lake. His touchdown late in the second quarter would prove to be all the Eagles would need.
Silver Lake’s offense compiled more than 400 yards of total offense, but was slowed by penalties and two turnovers.
Rossville generated 191 yards against the Silver Lake defense and committed two turnovers.
St. James holds off Blue Valley to win the battle of No. 4 teams
St. James Academy improved to 5-0 with a 35-28 win over Blue Valley. The Thunder entered Friday’s game ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, while the Tigers were No. 4 in 6A.
Jack Petz led the way for the St. James in rushing for all five of the Thunder’s touchdowns.
The Thunder built a 21-0 lead before an Eric Olson run pulled the Tigers within 21-7 late in the second quarter.
Alex Totta would then score from a yard out to bring Blue Valley within 21-14 in the third quarter.
But Petz would answer with a 63-yard run that eventually set up his 5-yard score to give St. James a two-score lead back.
Luke Bernard hit Cameron Green on a 25-yard touchdown pass to once again pull the Tigers within 28-21 after three quarters.
But Petz would again have the answer with a short TD run early in the fourth quarter to put the Thunder up 35-21.
Schurr’s carries defending champion Osborne past Solomon
Osborne picked up a key win in 8M-I, District 4, by outscoring Solomon, 58-40.
Osborne senior running back Denton Schurr carried 49 times for 465 yards and seven touchdowns in the win. Schurr carried on 49 of the Bulldogs’ 67 carries on the night as Osborne played without the Holloway brothers: sophomore running back Darrien and junior quarterback Darnell due to a team violation.
For the season, Schurr pushed his season total to 807 yards and 14 touchdowns. He earned Kpreps all-state honors last season after rushing for 1,788 yards and 31 scores. Darnell and Darrien Holloway had combined for 801 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in Osborne’s first four weeks.
Sophomore Steele Wolters stepped in at quarterback and completed 6 of 7 attempts for 34 yards. Kade Miller added 61 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. Senior Roxton Brown delivered 14 tackles, four for loss.
Osborne led 18-12 at halftime and 34-24 after three quarters before outscoring the Gorillas 24-16 in the fourth quarter.
Ell-Saline wins battle of unbeatens over Hutch Trinity
Much like last season this game was a defensive battle. Ell-Saline improved to 5-0 with a 14-6 victory over Hutchinson Trinity in the Fan’s Choice for the Kpreps Game of the Week.
Trinity got on the board first on an Aaron Guerrero touchdown run late in the second quarter.
The Cardinals would answer right back as Nick Davenport connected with Sawyer Kramer on a long pass that set up Davenport’s short touchdown run. Ell-Saline led 7-6 at the break.
Davenport added his second touchdown run on a 22-yard sprint in the second half for the 14-6 lead.
Last season, Trinity scored with less than a minute to go to beat Ell-Saline, 8-0.
Wichita Northwest hands Kapaun first loss, 26-14
Wichita Northwest shut out Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the second half en route to a 26-14 win on Friday night.
Breece Hall rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, while Austin Anderson passed for 278 yards and a touchdown and added a touchdown run.
Kapaun led 14-13 at halftime before Anderson then hit Jaxson Reynolds on a long touchdown pass to give Northwest a 19-14 advantage. Anderson then broke an 11-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to go up two scores.
It was a unique victory for the Grizzlies in relying heavily on their defense. The 26 points scored are the fewest points scored in a Wichita Northwest victory since a 16-8 win over Wichita East during the 2013 season.
Bonner Springs turns over Basehor-Linwood, 33-21
Entering Week 5, much had been made of Basehor-Linwood being the only team in Kansas yet to allow a point on the season. The Bobcats had outscored their first four opponents 223-0.
But Bonner Springs wasn’t worried about that. The Braves broke through on the scoreboard on a touchdown pass from Dalton Blakemore to Tristin Eddy in the second quarter to tie Basehor, 7-7, and would go on to intercept five passes in a 33-21 win.
Devante Washington returned an interception for a touchdown shortly after to give Bonner Springs a 13-7 lead and the Braves never looked back.
Blakemore then hit Jamison Jackson on a short touchdown pass for a 20-7 lead, but Basehor-Linwood would respond when Dylan Mussett tossed a touchdown pass to cut the lead to 20-14 at halftime.
Noah Villarreal extended Brave lead to 26-14 mid-way through the third quarter on a 40-yard touchdown, and then basically put the game away with a 75-yard score later to make it 33-14.
Basehor-Linwood would add a touchdown in the final 4 minutes, but the Bobcats couldn’t overcome six turnovers in the loss.
Labette County gets statement win, 34-7, over Fort Scott
Labette County grabbed the momentum in the SEK League race with a 34-7 victory over Fort Scott.
Easton Dean passed for 165 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 104 yards and two scores to lead the Grizzlies.
Parsons transfer T.J. Mayhue added a pair of touchdown runs to help the Grizzlies.
Labette County led 20-0 at the half before Zarek Fewell scored to pull the Tigers within 20-7.
Mayhue then added his second touchdown run to extend the lead to 26-7 late in the third quarter.
Pratt has just enough to escape Hoisington
The Pratt Greenbacks extended their win streak to 13 games with a 35-28 road win at Hoisington.
Pratt appeared to take control in jumping out to a 20-6 lead in the second quarter, but Hoisington pulled within 20-14 on a short Sean Urban touchdown. The Cards then took a 22-20 lead into halftime as senior Rudy Gearhart returned an interception more than 70 yards for a score.
In the third quarter, freshman quarterback Mason Haxen scored on a short touchdown run to extend the Hoisington lead to 28-20.
The defending 4A-II champs would answer as quarterback Landen Studer scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to tie the game.
Eventually the Greenbacks would take lead on a Travis Theis 11-yard run which would prove to be the winning score.
Nemaha Central wins battle over Centralia
Nemaha Central, the top ranked team in Class 3A, shut out Centralia 13-0 on Friday night.
The Thunder scored single touchdowns in the first and second quarters to complete the scoring.
Junior Dalton Schmelzle scored on a 13-yard run and threw a short touchdown pass to Mitchell Henry.
While this goes on the Thunder resume as another quality win, it may actually say more about the strength of Centralia. After a struggling through a 1-8, injury riddled 2016, Centralia looks to be a real contender in Class 2A.
Sabetha holds off Perry-Lecompton, 28-21
Sabetha picked up a key Big 7 Conference victory, 28-21 over Perry-Lecompton. Both teams entered Friday’s game unbeaten and the Perry-Lecompton Kaws came in averaging 63 points per game.
Sabetha took a 14-7 lead into halftime as Joe Gruber rushed for a pair of touchdowns.
Gruber would score again as Sabetha built a 28-7 lead before the Kaws rallied with two, fourth-quarter touchdown passes by Dalton Kellum.
Gruber rushed for three scores while Gabe Garber added the fourth touchdown.
St. Francis escapes Hoxie in battle of top-5 teams
The top-ranked St. Francis Indians overcame all of the week’s distraction of special school board meetings and players quitting to hold off No. 5 Hoxie, 16-8.
Sainty scored its points in the first half and held off a talented Hoxie team.
The victory is key in 8M-I, District 8 where St. Francis, Hoxie, and Atwood-Rawlins County figure to be the three serious contenders for the two playoff spots. Hoxie defeated Rawlins County 22-6 last week, while St. Francis hosts the Buffaloes next week in their annual battle for the Yoke.
Pittsburg overcomes injuries, win at Andover Central
Pittsburg High overcame injuries to two quarterbacks but held off Andover Central 12-7. Senior quarterback Chase Curtis was carted off with a leg injury on the Purple Dragon’s first offensive series. Junior Ty Roark came in and hit Jhalani Long on a 76-yard swing pass for a 6-0 lead late in the third quarter.
Pittsburg would hold that 6-0 lead until late in the fourth quarter when emergency quarterback Chase Johnson tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Tye Cicero. But after missing the PAT earlier, Nathan Neef’s extra point was blocked this time.
Andover Central got on the board with a Reagan Jones touchdown run with under two minutes remaining to pull within 12-7. The Jaguars had one last shot at the Pittsburg 31-yard line on the game’s final play, but Neef registered a sack to end the game and preserve the win.
Yellow Jackets outlast Bluestem in double overtime, 55-49
Fredonia improved to 3-2 with a 55-49, double-overtime win over Leon-Bluestem.
This one had a wild finish to regulation as Fredonia scored with less than 1:30 left and got a two-point conversion to tie the game at 41. Bluestem attempted to move the ball down the field, but turned the ball over on downs with three seconds left. Fredonia heaved a pass into the end zone on the last play of regulation that was dropped.
Fredonia scored first in overtime and took a 49-41 lead, but Bluestem would answer with a touchdown pass on 4th-and-9. The two-point attempt forced a second overtime with the game tied at 49.
This time Bluestem got the ball first and the Yellow Jacket defense held. Fredonia would score on the first play of double overtime to win 55-49.
Bluestem quarterback Coy Moran passed for 306 yards and four touchdowns, and added 113 yards rushing and two more scores.
Another week, another huge performance by Schlagle’s Webb
Not to be outdone by Schurr, Schlagle’s Ivan Webb also put up big numbers on the ground on Friday night and seems to one-up his prior performances each week.
A week after rushing for 378 yards and seven touchdowns in a win over KC Washington, Webb tallied 411 yards on Friday night with four more touchdowns.
In the Stallions’ five games, Webb has now rushed for 1,645 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Schlagle remained unbeaten with a 41-13 win over KC Wyandotte. The Stallions remain in the running for a top seed on the east side of Class 5A. Schlagle earned the No. 1 seek last season and slipped by No. 16 Topeka Highland Park 24-16 in the first round.
Otis-Bison opens district play by beating Sharon Springs-Wallace County
Otis-Bison trailed 16-14 after the first quarter but pulled away to beat Wallace County, 70-24, at home in a key Eight-Man, Division II, District 6 matchup.
The Cougars had lost in the first round of the playoffs to Wallace County in 2015 and in district play last year by scores of 65-20 and 28-20, respectively. Before then, the two teams hadn't met up since '09 when Otis-Bison won 60-30 in the first round of the playoffs.
On Friday, the Cougars outscored the Wildcats, 48-8, in the second and third quarters combined.
