On this week’s Subway Friday Fresh Take, we’ll take a look at a few key results that helped shape Week 2 including the state’s longest current winning streak coming to a screeching halt.

Goddard blasts Derby behind Sullivan’s big night
Last season Derby cruised past Goddard 35-6 in a game that was called final at halftime due to severe weather. One can make an argument that Friday night’s game was over even sooner than that.
Class 5A’s second-ranked Lions throttled 6A No. 1 Derby 50-20, ending the Panthers’ and the state’s longest current winning streak at 24 games.
Lion quarterback Blake Sullivan rushed for three touchdowns and threw three touchdown passes in the win.
Goddard jumped out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter behind scoring runs from Sullivan and Darius Russell, and a touchdown pass from Sullivan to Zack True.
Derby responded with a touchdown pass from Hunter Igo to Jack Taylor to pull within 22-6.
Sullivan would answer with a 25-yard run to make it 29-6, then after recovering a Derby fumble on the ensuing kickoff, he would add his third rushing touchdown for a 36-6 lead.
Sullivan would go on to throw two more touchdown passes as Goddard eventually led 43-6 at the half, and 50-14 in the third quarter.
If there was any question as whether the Lions were talented enough to get back to the Class 5A title game, those were answered on Friday.

Aquinas doubles-up Blue Valley North in battle of ranked EKL teams
Class 5A’s top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas Saints used two third-quarter touchdowns to pull away and beat 6A No. 3 Blue Valley North, 28-14.
Cameron Jackson rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns with his second score putting the Saints up 28-7 late in the third quarter.
Blue Valley North’s Graham Mertz tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Grant Hamel in the fourth quarter to get within 14 points, but the Mustangs could get no closer.
Mertz’s touchdown to Dylan Freberg tied the game at 7 in the first quarter, but Aquinas quarterback Will Swanson would score on a 6-yard touchdown to put the Saints up 14-7 at the half. Swanson would add another short run midway through the third quarter for a 21-7 lead.
Aquinas rushed for more than 250 yards in the game, while holding the Mustangs to less than 20 yards rushing.

4A-I: No. 3 Maize South shuts out No. 2 McPherson, 9-0
For the third time in the past two seasons, Maize South was pull out close victory over McPherson. The Mavericks, as they have so many times in the other 53 wins in school history, rode their defense on Friday night to a 9-0 win over McPherson.
Maize South tackled McPherson quarterback Kyler Hoppes in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
The ensuing free kick set up the Mavericks in good field position, and a few plays later Ryan Grabman hit Corey Minks on a 14-yard touchdown pass to end the half with a 9-0 lead.
The Maverick defense held serve during the second half and still has not given up a point this season.

Top-ranked Collegiate holds off Hoisington, 35-20
Wichita Collegiate, the No. 1 team in Class 4A-II, went on a late run to defeat Hoisington 35-20 and end the Cardinals 27-game regular-season winning streak.
The game turned out much like last season’s matchup in Hoisington where the Cardinals scored the 23 unanswered points in the second half to win 31-22.
On Friday, after Hoisington took a 20-14 lead in the third quarter, and the Spartans scored the game’s final 21 points to claim the 15-point win.
Collegiate senior quarterback Cody McNerney rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another 170 yards and another score. Meanwhile, Hoisington started freshman Mason Haxton who added a short touchdown run to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.

De Soto rolls past Bonner Springs, 36-0
On paper, this one looked like a good challenge for Class 4A-I No. 5 De Soto before returning to the Frontier League schedule with consecutive games against traditional powers Louisburg and Paola.
Instead, De Soto methodically pulled away from Bonner Springs, shutting out the Braves for a second consecutive season. The Wildcats beat Bonner Springs 28-0 last season.
The game was scoreless until Leo Oplotnik’s touchdown run early in the second quarter. De Soto would go on to score twice more in the quarter, including a Jack Barger touchdown run with less than 20 seconds in the half.
In the second half, Bryce Mohl threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Wildcats continually pulled away. Meanwhile, De Soto’s defense was shutting down a Bonner Springs team that put up 56 points in a win over KC Turner last week.

Galena holds off a Frontenac rally for a key CNC win
Galena built a 28-7 lead on visiting Frontenac, but needed a late interception from Michael Helton to seal a 28-21 win.
The Bulldogs led 28-7 early in the fourth quarter before Frontenac scored on a long touchdown pass from Peyton Brown to Gage Clothier to pull within 14. The Raiders then converted an onside kick and eventually scored on Jake Wilbert’s second touchdown of the game to make it 28-21.
The Raider defense got a much-needed stop, any of Frontenac tying the game ended with Helton’s interception.
JC Shelton rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Galena, while the Helton brothers, Michael and Joseph, each added one scoring run.

Sabetha shuts out Holton, 21-0
Sabetha knocked off the Holton Wildcats for a second consecutive season, but this time didn’t need the dramatics of last year.
The Bluejays took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a short Joe Gruber touchdown run and were right back in the end zone a couple of minutes later.
Sabetha returned a Holton punt to the 1-yard line and Gruber added his second score for a 14-0 lead.
The Bluejays would tack on one more touchdown before halftime to lead 21-0.
In the game last season, Sabetha recovered a Holton fumble at the Wildcat 11-yard line with nine seconds left in the game to set up the winning 28-yard field goal. The Blue Jays won, 25-22.
Sabetha has now won two straight against Holton after not beating the Wildcats in the nine years prior to the 2016 season.

Phillipsburg bests Smith Center again, 29-16
Another Mid-Continent League showdown between Phillipsburg and Smith Center again went the way of the Panthers. Class 3A No. 3 Phillipsburg shut out Class 2-1A No. 1 Smith Center, 23-0 for a seventh consecutive win over the Redmen.
Friday’s game remained scoreless until midway through the second quarter when Phillipsburg junior quarterback Trey Sides scored on an 8-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers would take that lead into the break, but extend it on the second half kickoff as John Gower returned the kick 85 yards for a touchdown. Kirk Coomes hauled in a long touchdown pass from Sides later in the quarter for a 20-0 lead.
The Panthers would later add a field goal after thwarting Smith Center’s scoring threat with a stop on fourth down and goal.

Scott City rallies to beat Holcomb, 23-14
After falling behind 14-0, Scott City scored the game’s final 23 points to beat Holcomb, 23-14. The Beavers put a stop to Holcomb’s two-game win streak in the series.
Early on Holcomb looked in control as Trey Gilbert’s short touchdown run gave the Longhorns a 6-0 lead. Shortly after, Chance Rodriguez scooped up a Scott City fumble and returned it for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Scott City answered right back on a long touchdown pass from Parker Gooden to Marshal Faurot, then tied the game on a Nick Nowak touchdown run.
By halftime, the Beavers had grabbed a 17-14 lead on a Moses Hinojos field goal.
The game would stay that way until the fourth quarter when a Wyatt Hayes touchdown run gave the Beavers’ a two-score lead.

Hays shocks Great Bend in overtime
An extra point proved to be the difference as Hays High scored on a Hunter Brown touchdown and Logan Clark converted the PAT in overtime to defeat Great Bend, 21-20.
The game between the WAC rivals was scoreless at halftime, and Hays led 7-0 after three quarters.
After the Panthers scored to open the fourth quarter, Brown scored to give the Indians a 14-7 lead.
A late Dalton Miller interception would give Great Bend new life and the Panthers would tie the game at 14 with under two minutes to go in regulation. Great Bend would then miss a long field goal forcing overtime.
The Panthers took two plays to score on their overtime possession, but missed the extra point allowing for Brown and Clark’s heroics.

Rossville loses a second straight, 42-26 to Rock Creek
Rock Creek used a big third quarter in pulling away for a 42-26 win over Rossville. The three-time, Class 3A champion Bulldawgs have lost consecutive games for the first time since the 2010 season.
The Mustangs led 14-12 at halftime, but used a 21-7 third quarter to take control, 35-19. Taybor Vetter rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass.
Rossville will look to get on track against Riley County (2-0) next week.

Other results to note:
Ellsworth defeated Beloit, 28-22 in overtime, on Friday night ending a string of nine straight losses to the Trojans. Since 2004, Ellsworth had gone just 1-14 against Beloit with the lone victory coming 42-6 in 2009.
Thomas More Prep’s point total in its 49-13 road win against county rival Ellis tied the most for the Monarchs since a 49-0 victory at Russell in Week 7 of the 2013 season. Before then, the previous point high was a 54-20 game versus Larned in Week 3 of the 2011 season.
Marysville’s 43-20 win versus Abilene marked the Cowboys’ first defeat in North Central Kansas League play since Week 5 of the 2013 season. That season, Abilene lost 49-35 to Wamego at home. Abilene had won 17 straight conference games since. It marked the first win for Marysville against Abilene since ’08 and ended an eight-game losing skid versus the Cowboys.
Logan-Palco defeated Northern Valley, 70-14, in the annual rivalry matchup. The Trojans outscored the Huskies, 44-0, in the first quarter. David Thompson had 10 carries for 176 yards and three scores. The Trojans ran the ball on every play and finished with 21 carries for 389 yards and seven TDs. Logan-Palco is now 3-1 against its rival (three in a row) since the two schools formed the co-operative agreement for football.
Yates Center picked up a 20-14 win over Northeast-Arma in a Three Rivers League game between a pair of struggling programs. The win was the Wildcats fifth in the past three seasons, but just Yates Center’s 16 victory since the beginning of the 2004 season. Northeast has won only 22 games during that period, but the Vikings have now lost their last 14 games.
Southern Coffey County is now 2-9 in the last two seasons, but both wins have come against Waverly. Waverly reached the playoffs last year, defeated Hartford in Week 1, and is 7-5 since the start of the 2016 season. On Friday, the Titans beat Waverly, 24-18. Last year, SCC won 30-28.
Otis-Bison defeated Ellinwood 56-0 in a Central Prairie League matchup on Friday night. That may not seem unusual, but what if we told you that the Cougars scored all 56 points in the first quarter!
Speaking of unusual, the Rolla Pirates’ game at Balko (Okla.) was delayed for a bit in the third quarter because of a rattlesnake on the field! Balko went on to defeat the Pirates 42-26.
