Class 4A
KC Piper 20, Spring Hill 14 – Piper scored 14 points in the third quarter to take a 20-7 lead and held off Spring Hill 20-14. Colton Beebe led the Pirates with 91 yards rushing, while Sterling Owens added 82 yards and Travon Jones 65 more. Quarterback Tanner Eikenbary passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third for the Pirates.
Paola 42, Independence 13 – Independence converted an early Paola turnover into points, but after that the Panthers rolled to the quarterfinals with 42 consecutive points. Drew Henn rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to Mitch Sloan to lead Paola. Corey Stallbaumer, Jake Robison, and ExZavier Miller also ran for touchdowns for the Panthers. Paola has eliminated Independence the past three times the Bulldogs have reached the playoffs (2009, 2010, & 2013).
Baldwin 28, Tonganoxie 10 – Cornell Brown and Jake Katzer scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure an 18-point Baldwin win at Tonganoxie. The Bulldogs rushed for more than 300 yards on the night led by Brown’s 126 and Joel Katzer’s 96. Jake Katzer scored two touchdowns on the night, while Joel added a third. The Baldwin defense held Tonganoxie to less than 50 rushing yards.
Coffeyville 42, Chanute 21 – Coffeyville led 28-21 in the final minutes before a penalty on a fake punt attempt gave Chanute new life in Golden Tornado territory. Chanute drove to the Coffeyville 6-yard line and appeared to be going in to tie the score when Coffeyville’s James Newton intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining. Coffeyville got another pick-six in the final 10 seconds to win 42-21.
Holton 35, Mulvane 14 – Holton racked up more than 450 yards on the ground in a 35-14 win at Mulvane on Saturday afternoon. Brenden Hampton rushed for 218 yards and a touchdown to lead Holton, while Drake Ewing twice as part of his 80-yard day. Michael Mason managed 84 yards on the ground on 26 carries for the Mulvane Wildcats.
Andale 36, McPherson 7 – Hunter Knoblauch returned the game’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown as Andale eliminated McPherson 36-7. Jared Smarsh scored two of this three touchdown runs in the second quarter as the Indians led 22-7 at halftime. Smarsh finished with 90 yards rushing, while Knoblauch rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown.
Topeka Hayden 35, Winfield 27 – Hayden built a 35-7 lead after three quarters and withstood a furious Winfield rally to win 35-27. The Vikings scored 20 points in the fourth quarter aided by a couple of onside kick recoveries. Zach Smith led Hayden with 81 yards rushing, while J.C. Menke added 68 yards and three touchdowns before leaving with an injury. Jordan Johnson led Winfield with 117 rushing yards, while Will Adler passed for 175 yards and three scores.
Buhler 56, Abilene 22 – Buhler dominated Abilene for a second consecutive road playoff win. Riley Allen rushed for 183 yards and two scores and Denton Branscom added 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns as Buhler built a 42-7 halftime lead. Branscom also hauled in a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jace Williams.
Class 3A
Silver Lake 41, Hiawatha 7 – Silver Lake scored two touchdowns late in the second quarter to break open a 13-7 lead into a 28-7 lead at halftime. Dailin Kruger passed for 242 yards and three scores – all to Isaac Pridey who caught three passes for 75 yards. Cody Renfro rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles.
St. Mary’s Colgan 17, Wellsville 8 – Colgan intercepted Wellsville quarterback Shamus Kearney five times and forced six total turnovers during a hard-fought 17-8 win. After scoring in only two plays to open the game, the Panthers trailed for much of the game 8-6 to the Eagles. Quarterback Luke Marquardt hit Christian Cedeno for 27 yards on a key fourth-and-11 play to set up a 9-yard TD pass from Marquardt to Ian Duncan. Colgan held the slime 14-8 lead until Aaron Twarog booted a 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Rossville 25, Nemaha Valley 15 – Nemaha Valley pulled to within 18-15 in the third quarter on a Caleb Meyer touchdown run, but Rossville immediately answered back with Thatcher Horak long touchdown run and a 25-15 lead. Tucker Horak led the Bulldogs with 150 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He also passed for 135 yards in the game.
Cherryvale 31, Humboldt 0 – Cherryvale built a 10-0 halftime lead thanks to a field goal by Tristan Thornton and a 41-yard touchdown run by Zach Trim. Thornton rushed for two touchdowns in the second half as the Chargers beat Humboldt for the second time this season.
Conway Springs 34, Kingman 23 – Kingman jumped out early 8-0 and Conway Springs scored with under 20 seconds in the half to take a 13-8 lead. Luke Fischer scored his second touchdown run in the third quarter as the Cardinals extended their lead to 27-8.
Scott City 24, Phillipsburg 21 – Defending champion Scott City came up with a crucial fourth-down stop to win at Phillipsburg 24-21. The Panthers went for a fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line trailing 24-21 in the fourth quarter, but the Beavers came up with a tackle for loss to preserve their lead and the win. Scott City led 16-7 at halftime, and scored on a Trey O’Neil touchdown pass to Brayden Strine in the third quarter.
Sedgwick 35, Marion 0 – Sedgwick scored 21 points in the third quarter to pull away in defeating Marion for a second time this season. Dalton Brandt rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals. Brylie Ware added 101 yards on the ground and passed for 130 yards and two scores.
Beloit 57, Holcomb 30 – After an early Peyton Vetter touchdown, the Beloit defense returned a fumble for a score to take a 16-0 lead. Holcomb answered with two touchdowns by Heath Tucker to pull within 16-14, but Beloit’s Bowe Behymer returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 22-14. Vetter then hit Behymer on a touchdown pass to make it 30-14 Trojans, and Beloit would score twice more in the first half to lead 41-14.
8-Man, Division I
Clifton-Clyde 42, Yates Center 28 – Clifton-Clyde built a 30-12 halftime lead and held on to beat Yates Center 42-28 to advance to the state semifinals. The Eagles used a 63-yard punt return by Caleb Gelino to extend their lead in the second quarter. Yates Center began the second half by returning the kickoff for a score to pull within 30-20, but the Wildcats later lost a fumble in their end zone which the Eagles recovered for a 36-20 lead. Yates Center pulled to within 36-28 late in the third quarter, but the Eagles added a touchdown before the scoreless fourth quarter. The Wildcats turned the ball over on downs at the Clifton-Clyde 10-yard line in the fourth quarter.
Osborne 68, Marais des Cygnes Valley 52 – Top-ranked Osborne won a shootout over No. 4 Marais des Cygnes Valley, 68-52 on Saturday. A pair of Bulldog touchdowns late in the second quarter allowed Osborne some separation with a 36-20 halftime lead. Jake Tiernan passed for 170 yards and three touchdowns and added 70 rush yards and three more scores. Trey Irey passed for four touchdowns for MdCV, while Kaden Vanderpool accounted for four total touchdowns for the Trojans.
Hodgeman County 44, Central Plains 36 – Hodgeman County remained unbeaten with an impressive 44-36 win over Central Plains. The Longhorns led 22-14 at halftime and opened up a 38-14 lead in the third quarter before the Oilers rallied. Central Plains pulled to within 38-28 with just under nine minutes remaining, but the Longhorns pushed the lead out to 44-28 on a Kolt Washburn touchdown right after an Oiler fumble. The Oilers scored again with 3:50 remaining as Braeden Crites connected with Layne Bieberle, but could not get in the end zone again to tie the game.
Hoxie 38, Kiowa County 8 – After a scoreless first quarter, Hoxie scored 30 points in the second and third quarters combined to top No. 2 Kiowa County 38-8. The Indians rushed for more than 265 yards in the game led by junior Josh Heim’s 110 yards and a touchdown. Chase Kennedy scored twice on the ground and rushed for 66 yards, while Connor Katt added 91 yards and a score. Trever Powell ended his stellar career at Kiowa County with 194 yards rushing on 37 carries.
8-Man, Division II
Baileyville B&B 50, Waverly 0 – Dustin Rottinghaus threw five touchdown passes as Baileyville B&B rolled to a 50-0 road shutout of Waverly. The Falcons led 44-0 at halftime before ending the game mid-way through the third quarter. The win sets up a final showdown between Twin Valley League rivals Hanover and Baileyville B&B in Hanover next week. The Falcons beat the Wildcats 34-22 during the regular season.
Hanover 60, South Barber 6 – Hanover dominated a second consecutive playoff opponent by ending the game at halftime. Quarterback Andrew Bruna passed for more than 230 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for four more scores for Hanover. Bruna added more than 220 yards rushing on the day as well.
Beloit St. John’s-Tipton 22, Victoria 16 – St. John’s-Tipton built a 22-0 halftime lead and held off Victoria 22-16. Trey Dubbert threw touchdown passes to Luke Eilert and Parker Gates and Connor Eilert added a touchdown run for the Blujays. Victoria score on a Brady Dinkel touchdown pass to Tanner Hobbs, and a scoring run by Bryan Dome.
Sharon Springs-Wallace Co. 51, Dighton 6 – Dighton grabbed an early lead, but it was all Wallace County from then on as the Wildcats picked up their second win over the Hornets this season. Kyle Gfeller rushed for 152 yards and two scores on only 11 attempts. He also passed for a touchdown to Cayden Daily.
