One of the most successful Kansas high school football coaches is leaving the state.
Gregg Webb recently resigned as head football coach at Eudora to take the same position at Truman High School in Independence (Mo.).
Webb’s resignation ended his 11-year run at Eudora that resulted in a 96-30 record, 10 playoff appearances, and back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2012.
Despite returning just seven total starters from the 2011 team that fell 21-0 to Rose Hill in the Class 4A title game, Webb led the Cardinals to a second straight 4A state title game this fall earning the 2012 Kpreps 4A Coach of the Year. Eudora fell to Holton in this year’s championship by an identical 21-0 score.
In Webb’s time at Eudora, he built the Cardinals into one of the elite programs in 4A.
However, Webb’s biggest accomplishments came at Claflin High School. Webb led the Wildcats to a 152-24 mark from 1987-2001, including five state championships and four state runner-up finishes. Webb’s time at Claflin included three straight state championships in Class 2-1A from 1997-1999 where the Wildcats tied the then-state record of 51 consecutive wins. The 1999 Claflin Wildcats are widely regarded as one of the best teams in the classification’s history.
Webb also claimed back-to-back 8 Man, Division II state titles at Claflin in 1991 and 1992.
At Truman High School, Webb will take over a program which has gone just 8-33 over the past four years and is coming off of a 1-9 season.
The Patriots have not posted a winning season since going 6-5 in 2004.
Whoever takes over at Eudora can build upon a talented player in quarterback Andrew Ballock.
Ballock (6-3, 170) rushed for a team-high 1,272 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior last fall, and threw for more than 800 yards and eight scores. He earned 4A All-State honors at defensive back where he registered 64 tackles and eight interceptions.
