Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Blue Valley West evened its record at 2-2 with a 21-7 win over Staley (Mo.). Sage Huffman carried 28 times for 192 yards to lead the Jaguar ground attack. Junior quarterback Tate Nagy completed 12 of 17 passes for 117 yards. Huffman has now rushed for 580 yards this season and pushed his career total to 3,422 yards.

Lawrence Free State remained unbeaten with a dominating 41-12 victory over Shawnee Mission Northwest. After falling behind 6-0 early, the Firebirds scored the game’s next 41 points. Quarterback Wesley Edison rushed for three touchdowns as part of his 114-yard night. He also passed for 98 yards including a long touchdown to Devon Hamilton.

Olathe East defeated Lawrence High 24-6 in a game that began on Thursday night before being suspended until Friday because of lightning. The Hawks rushed for nearly 250 yards in the game led by Gerard Reed’s 101 yards rushing. Reed rushed for a score and caught a touchdown pass form Jack Cornell. The Hawks also got a defensive score when Milo Burton returned an interception for a touchdown.

Olathe West picked up its first win of the season and the first in the John Wiemers era by defeating Olathe Northwest, 27-7. Freshman quarterback Cameron Kruse completed 10 of 17 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown that went to Elijah Hakim. Sophomore Josh Foland led the Owls with 123 yards on the ground and two scores.

Olathe South won for the third consecutive week by topping Shawnee Mission West, 50-6. The Falcons led 50-0 at halftime as three of Bryce Noernberg’s four completions went for touchdowns. Jackson Skeens caught two touchdown passes totaling 35 yards and Cooper Warren hauled in a 60-yard bomb. Warren, Noernberg, and Reid Stainbrook each added rushing scores.


Class 5A:

Great Bend scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters in rolling past Wichita Southeast, 55-0. Senior Cody Miller rushed for 198 yards and five touchdowns on 23 attempts. The Panthers racked up 308 yards on the ground. Daxton Minton and Maddox Spray each threw touchdown passes in the game. Great Bend (2-2) will host Dodge City next week.

Lansing handed Topeka Seaman a second consecutive loss with a 28-21 decision on Friday night. Lion quarterback Dalton Jorgensen passed for 246 yards and three touchdowns – two of which went to Lexton Grafke who had nine catches for 125 yards. Caden Howell rushed for a score and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jorgensen. Callen Barta led Seaman with eight catches for 87 yards rushing and two scores.

Liberal defeated Dodge City, 21-7, to remain unbeaten on the season. Redskins quarterback Brooks Kappelmann passed for 241 yards and two touchdowns and added 64 yards rushing and another score. Kappelmann connected with Zayden Martinez eight times for 148 yards and both touchdowns. Dodge City’s score came on a Ryan Gonzalez touchdown run.   

Drew Kemp passed for 266 yards and two touchdowns as Maize defeated Salina South, 45-13. Kemp threw touchdown passes to Bryson Hayes and Jaeden Martin. Kemp also added a rushing score. Elijah Cross led the Eagle ground game with ten carries for 54 yards, while Augie Fast added 30 yards on six carries. Salina South has now dropped 19 consecutive games.

Pittsburg improved to 3-1 by defeating rival Fort Scott, 32-22. Wyatt Rink had a huge night with 250 yards rushing on 20 carries. Rink scored four rushing touchdowns, while Tucker Askins also added a rushing score.  Rink’s big night pushed his season total to 523 yards and ten touchdowns in four games.

Salina Central scored with :01 remaining in the game on a touchdown pass from Jack Gordon to Hunter Mowery to pull within 21-20 of Andover. The Mustangs then lined up for the PAT, but Mowery faked the hold and hit Sam Payne on a game-winning conversion for the 22-21 victory. Gordon passed for 156 yards and the final touchdown and added a rushing score. Elijah Wilson led the ground game with 121 yards and a touchdown.


Class 4A:

Basehor-Linwood scored 21 points in the second quarter to knockout Shawnee Heights, 42-14. It was the second straight win for the Bobcats which opened with competitive losses to Tonganoxie and KC Piper. Brady Van Donge passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns for the Bobcats, but was intercepted three times. Kaleb Scott hauled in ten receptions for 155 yards and two scores. Scott also added a 10-yard touchdown run. Allen Baughman led Shawnee Heights with 70 yards rushing and two scores.

McPherson won for the second time this season by doubling-up Towanda-Circle, 32-16. The Bullpups got out to a 32-0 lead in the game before Circle battled back. The McPherson defense forced five turnovers including three interceptions. Circle scores on a Conner Chadwell touchdown run and a pass form Chadwell to Nick Ahles.

Coffeyville shut out rival Independence, 35-0, to improve to 3-1. The Golden Tornado were led by Aaron Tunstall who rushed for 186 yards and three scores. Joshua Shobe added 50 yards and a score on the ground. Axel Erne also threw a touchdown pass to Jeremy Colbert, Jr. covering 18 yards. Coffeyville will take on fifth-ranked Wamego this week.

Atchison remained unbeaten with a 54-8 win over KC Schlagle. The Pheonix scored 47 points in the first half of the win. Jaden Carter led Atchison with 99 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Trey Carter, Xiomar Hernandez, and Chris Bennett each added rushing touchdowns. Trey Carter added 147 yards and a score through the air with his touchdown going to Jeter Purdy.


Class 3A:

Prairie View controlled things on the ground in a 44-19 win over Pioneer League rival Burlington. Sophomore Parker Schwarz rushed 11 times for 237 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Buffaloes. Prairie View rushed for 392 yards on the night. Schwarz’s classmate, Josh Goodwin, added 81 yards and a score on 14 carries.

Holcomb exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to turn a 21-0 halftime lead into a 55-14 lopsided decision over Goodland. Keegan Johnson passed for 203 yards and four touchdowns for the Longhorns in the win. Johnson connected with Braydon Bastin on two touchdowns covering 92 yards, and also hit Korbin Johnson and Manny Reyes on scoring strikes. Reyes added 100 yards and a score on the ground, while Holcomb was led by Damon Mesa’s 104 yards rushing with two scores.

In a battle of 3-0 teams, Parsons blasted Baxter Springs, 58-0. Jahmarion Washington rushed for 146 yards and three scores to lead the Vikings on the ground, while Trey Logan added a 46-yard scoring run. Tra Mack passed for 227 yards and three touchdowns – two going to Nasir Hagood. Landon Wheat caught two passes for 116 yards. The Viking defense held Baxter Springs to 34 yards of total offense on 45 plays.

Hesston picked up its second win in as many weeks in blasting Wichita Trinity, 49-14. Reed Friesen passed for 121 yards and three touchdowns and added 117 yards and a score on the ground for the Swathers. Friesen threw touchdown passes to Jackson Fry, Karter Gonzalez, and Jack Gash. Gonzalez also rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Asher Deutschendorf rushed for two scores.

Wellsville rolled to a 56-6 win over Osawatomie to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Eagles were led by senior quarterback William Dorsey who completed all ten of his passes for 214 yards and five touchdowns. Calvin Dwyer caught two touchdown passes and had 84 yards receiving to lead Wellsville. Dezmond Winton, Kenyon Gillins, and Brody Lee each also caught touchdowns, while Jace Troutman rushed for two scores.


Class 2A:

Haven won for a third consecutive week and posted a second consecutive shutout. The Wildcats blanked Lyons to improve to 3-1. Quarterback Nash Wray passed for 147 yards and connected with Aiden Hoopes on a touchdown pass. Van Loop added 76 yards on the ground for the Wildcats.

Osage City remained unbeaten with a 61-0 win over Eureka. The Indians scored 47 points in the first half and got started with a Cooper Parsons kickoff return for a touchdown. Kasen Parsons completed 8 of his 9 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns – one each to Jess Reece, Noah Schrader, Daityn Meek, and Cooper Stokes.

Caney Valley rode a strong defensive effort to improve to 3-1 by defeating Cherryvale, 42-6. The Bullpup defense held Cherryvale to 124 yards of total offense including only 45 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Caney Valley also picked off a pass and forced four punts. Caney will host Neodesha (2-2) this week.

Larned picked up a third consecutive victory by handling Nickerson, 56-12. The Indians were led by Luke Fischer on the ground with 166 yards and five touchdowns. Carson Shaver added 121 yards and a score on 12 attempts. Ty Smith and Cordell Hammeke each also scored rushing touchdowns.

Garden Plain shut out Chaparral 49-0 thanks for nearly 350 yards on the ground. The Owls were led by Gage Lee’s 160 yards and two scores, while quarterback Brady Brack passed for 170 yards and three scores. Brack connected with Seth Dugan on two scores totaling 107 yards and one to Ty Scheer.

Last year, Council Grove defeated Humboldt in a game that came down to the final play. This time, Humboldt edged Council Grove, 14-7. Humboldt had 63 plays for 258 yards, while Council Grove posted 42 plays for 201 yards. Humboldt ran for 198 yards, while Council Grove passed for 119 yards. Humboldt had eight passes defended and picked off three passes – two from junior Asher Hart and one by junior Logan Page. One of Hart’s interceptions went for a pick-six. Humboldt quarterback Blake Ellis accounted for 123 yards of total offense.

Beloit defeated Russell, 30-12. Beloit had its normal outstanding running game with 49 carries for 310 yards and three TDs. Senior Brodie Schroeder ran for 24 carries for 174 yards and three scores. Beloit held Russell to 16 carries for minus-24 yards. Russell junior Mason Rohr passed for 209 yards, while sophomore Walker Middleton had 10 catches for 110 yards and a score.


Class 1A:

Valley Heights shut out Republic County 52-0 to win for the third consecutive week. Senior Carson Spoonts passed for 99 yards and a touchdown and added 56 yards and two scores on the ground for the Mustangs. Jayden DeWalt also added two rushing scores. Since a Week 1 18-16 loss to Centralia, Valley Heights has scored 152 points over the last three weeks.

Ellis picked up its first win of the season by racing past Stanton County, 57-20. Logan Russell passed for 366 yards and threw seven touchdown passes. Russell connected with Mason Younger seven times for 207 yards and three touchdowns and Caleb Noble added 78 yards and two touchdown catches. Owen Richards and Ben Byers each added receiving scores.  

Conway Springs held off Central Plains League rival Medicine Lodge, 40-34, in a key 1A District 7. Cardinal standout Brayden Kunz rushed for 322 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. The Cardinals rushed for 438 yards in the game with Nathan Berntsen and Isaac Winter adding rushing scores. Medicine Lodge quarterback Ke’Veon Ruiz passed for 360 yards and three touchdowns and added 80 yards rushing and two scores.

Sterling, a Kpreps Potential Breakout Team, won at Inman, 35-18. Sophomore Zane Farney rushed 28 times for 247 yards and two scores for the Black Bears. Sterling improved to 3-1. Sterling rushed for 317 yards.


Class 8-man I

Atwood-Rawlins County improved to 4-0 and defeated highly depleted Hill City, 54-6. Rawlins County held the Ringnecks to 37 plays for 174 yards. The Ringnecks have missed key offensive players in QB Aiden Amrein and RB/ATH Dayton Stephen nearly all season. Rawlins County posted 414 yards of total offense. Junior Ryan Sramek had 15 carries for 219 yards and three scores. Senior Braxton Dixson completed 5 of 6 passes for 94 yards with two TDs. Sramek also had one reception, a 41-yard touchdown.

Quinter moved to 4-0 with a 44-6 win over Oberlin-Decatur Community. Rawlins County and Quinter will play each other in Week 6. Trace Kinderknecht continued his impressive season with 20 carries for 181 yards and three scores. Shea Salyers completed six of 12 passes for 116 yards and four TDs. Kinderknecht scored from 12, 43 and 56 yards. Ethan Gruenbacher caught receiving scores from 56, seven and 18 yards. Camden Polifka had a huge contest with 14 tackles, four sacks and two tackles for loss. Dashiell Brown had two sacks.

South Sumner County rolled over Udall, 52-0, and has still never lost a regular season game since Caldwell and South Haven formed a football co-operative agreement last year. Senior Alex Smith had five carries for 63 yards and two scores. Senior Jackson Risley had one reception, a 63-yard TD pass. Mak Blosser had four of six passes for 100 yards with two scores.

Little River won at Solomon, 54-8. Senior Andrew Smith rushed 14 times for 247 yards and four touchdowns. He also completed two of four passes for 69 yards with a score. Jaren Garrison had one catch, a 60-yard touchdown.

West Elk won at Sedan, 64-30. Junior Trent Haag completed 12 of 13 passes for 204 yards and two scores. Junior Creyo Koop had 19 carries for 189 yards and two scores. Haag rushed 11 times for 78 yards and three scores.


Class 8-man II

Thunder Ridge defeated Logan-Palco, 62-26. TR back Mason Baker leads eight-man in rushing yards. He rushed 31 times for 344 yards and six TDs. Plus, Baker completed seven of 12 passes for 112 yards for two scores.

Hodgeman County defeated Dighton, 58-30. Senior Owen Reece completed 27 of 37 passes for 312 yards with five touchdowns against no interceptions. He accounted for 22 carries for 75 yards and three scores.

Hutchinson Central Christian improved to 3-1 with a 52-6 win over Fairfield. Quarterback Nathan Reed passed for 161 yards and two touchdowns – one each to Justus Huff and Luke Eigsti. Ry Kooiman led Central Christian with 196 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. The Cougars have a challenging couple of week as they host No. 2 Kinsley in a non-district game before a road district showdown with No. 4 Canton-Galva the week after.

Marmaton Valley opened district play with a 60-0 blanking of Marias des Cygnes Valley. The Wildcats were led by Dre Ellis who rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Brayden Lawson passed for 71 yards and threw touchdown passes to Jaedon Granere and Tyler Lord. Brevyn Campbell also scored for Marmaton Valley. MdCV will move to 6-Man during the next cycle.

Beloit St. John’s-Tipton picked up its first win of the season by outscoring Pike Valley, 58-22. The Blujays led 38-16 at halftime before outscoring the Panthers 20-6 in the second half. Chance Jermark rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns for the Blujays, while Edward Horinek tossed a pair of touchdown passes to John Mick. Miles Rickard rushed for 75 yards and a score for Pike Valley.


6-Man

Peabody-Burns defeated Pawnee Heights, 76-58. Freshman Aiden Hurst paced Peabody-Burns with 13 of 23 passing for 345 yards with six scores against two interceptions. Hurst had 11 carries for 153 yards and two scores. For Pawnee Heights, senior Devin Hamby had 16 carries for 194 yards and five scores. Junior Jimmy Gardner delivered 12 rushes for 261 yards and two TDs.

Burrton improved to 2-2 with a 53-0 win over Chase. The Chargers were led by Ricky Diehl who passed for 103 yards and three scores. Noble Phillips rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns and Jude Barnes had a pair of touchdown receptions.
