6-Man Football Playoffs
North-No. 1 Weskan (5-2) - BYE
Weskan, the six-man state champion two years ago, actually lost twice but was undefeated in North Division play. The Coyotes earned the North title with a key 52-46 home win versus Golden Plains three weeks ago. Weskan lost 39-37 versus Pawnee Heights in Week 2, and 58-32 at Moscow in Week 3. Since then, Weskan is 4-0, including a forfeit win, and has scored 75, 52 and 92 points in those contests. Last week, in a 92-46 win versus Cheylin, quarterback Jace Mackley accounted for 11 scores and 425 total yards. Overall, Mackley has completed 124 of 196 for 1,643 yards with a 31/4 TD/INT ratio. Mac Purvis, Zack Box, Dalton Mackley and Tracer Vincent all have between 21 and 32 catches and four to 11 receiving scores.
North-No. 3 Cheylin (4-2) at South-No. 2 Pawnee Heights (6-1) – Pawnee Heights
This is a rematch of last year’s state championship game where Pawnee Heights defeated Cheylin, 62-12. The game was supposed to be played Week 3 in Rozel, but it was cancelled due to illness/injury for multiple Cheylin players. Pawnee Heights senior Kade Scott has delivered another exceptional season with 121 carries for 1,841 yards and 31 scores. He leads the team with 12 catches for 299 yards and six TDs. Defensively, he leads the Tigers with 96 tackles, seven TFLs, three interceptions and a pair of sacks. Cheylin has permitted 92 points in both of its losses. Sophomore quarterback Colton McCarty has passed for 705 yards with a 17/3 TD/INT ratio along with 1,262 rushing yards and 22 scores.
South-No. 1 Ashland (7-0) - BYE
Ashland is six-man’s lone undefeated team after it moved down from the eight-man ranks and won the South Division. Brothers and former Bluejay standouts Ben and Giles Fox have helped Ashland to a six-win turnaround. Ashland has allowed just 12.7 points per game. The Bluejays are the only team to beat Pawnee Heights (67-21) and won at Moscow, 46-43. Senior Cole Lohrding has passed for 428 yards and rushed for 252 with 16 scores accounted for, while sophomore Gage Branson has 664 rushing yards and 12 rushing scores. Ashland has just three turnovers and is plus-18 in turnover margin. Lohrding, a Coldwater-South Central transfer, has four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
South-No. 3 Moscow (4-4) at North-No. 2 Golden Plains (6-1) – Golden Plains
Moscow, in its first year of six-man football, lost 53-25 at Golden Plains in Week 2. Moscow opened 0-2 but is 4-2 since with losses by a combined 17 points to Ashland and Pawnee Heights. The Wildcats also lost 10-0 to Follett (Tex.) to open the season. Golden Plains lost 52-46 at Weskan in Week 6. The Bulldogs are 18-7 in the last three years as one of the original six-man programs. Senior Dylan Spresser has rushed for 1,172 yards with 26 scores, while senior Caleb Korte has 541 yards and 13 scores. Junior Rolis Loya has picked off five passes.
Kansas Christian Athletic Association (KCAA)
No. 1 Wichita Homeschool (8-0) – BYE
The Warriors completed an unbeaten regular season with last Saturday’s 63-14 win over Joplin’s Cornerstone Christian. Wichita Homeschool has been tested twice this season; namely in a 62-60 win over St. Mary’s Academy and an 88-66 win over former KCAA member Sunrise Christian Academy. Junior quarterback Will Day has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 1,784 yards and 29 touchdowns against only five interceptions. Day has also rushed for 346 yards and ten scores. Classmate Luke Johnson has added 737 rushing yards and 14 scores, while grabbing 26 receptions for 405 yards and nine touchdowns. Marshal Masterson is the team’s leading receiver with 34 catches for 637 yards and eight scores.
No. 4 Cair Paravel (3-4) vs. No. 5 St. John’s Military (1-6) – Cair Paravel
Cair Paravel will host St. John’s Military in the first round of the KCAA playoffs this week. The Lions have posted three wins this season, and continued their trend of a one-win improvement in each of the past two seasons. Cair Paravel defeated St. John’s Military, 44-14, in the season opener on August, 31st. St. John’s Military snapped a long losing streak earlier this month with a 50-0 win over Veritas Christian. The Muleskinners had lost 20 consecutive games dating back to 2015 before their dominating win over the Eagles.
No. 3 Manhattan Eagles (3-3) vs. No. 6 Veritas Christian (1-7) – Manhattan Eagles
The Manhattan Eagles will host Veritas Christian in another KCAA first-round playoff game. The Eagles are 3-3 on the season with wins over St. John’s Military, Cair Paravel, and Veritas Christian. The Eagles defeated the Veritas Christian Eagles, 34-0, back on September 14th. Manhattan has averaged 39 points per game, buoyed by last week’s 92-74 win over Cair Paravel. Meanwhile, Veritas Christian did not post a KCAA league win this season. The Eagles lone victory came against KC East Christian (Mo.) on September 21st. Veritas defeated KC East, 30-6. Veritas has been shut out four times this season and averages seven points per game.
No. 2 St. Mary’s Academy (5-1) -- BYE
The Crusaders have captured the KCAA tournament championship the past two seasons, beating Wichita Homeschool in the title game each year. This year, St. Mary’s Academy fell to the Warriors, 62-60 back on September 14th. St. Mary’s has won four straight games since that loss. For the season, the Crusaders have averaged 56 points per game, while giving up 21.
