Shawnee Mission East High School had its best football season in school history in 2013. The Lancers (11-2) would go punch-for-punch with state power Derby in the 6A state title game, but came up short losing 28-21 to take 6A state runner-up honors.

The Derby Panthers won their first state football title since 1994, 28-21 over Shawnee Mission East. Travis Young returned a punt 35 yards deep into Lancer territory to set up the winning score with just over two minutes remaining.
