Class 6A

The rankings remained the same in Class 6A this week as only three ranked teams played.

Lawrence and Derby held on to the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, despite having its games canceled.

Olathe North remains at No. 3 after edging Olathe West 21-17. The Eagles rushed for 250 yards in the win and improved to 3-0. It was the first-ever meeting between Olathe North and Olathe West.

Junction City maintained the No. 4 spot after winning another hard-fought battle. This time, the Blue Jays held off Washburn Rural 34-30. All four of their games have been decided by seven points or fewer.

Shawnee Mission Northwest stays at No. 5 with a 49-0 victory over Shawnee Mission North. The Cougars get a huge challenge this week at Class 5A No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas.

Class 5A

The classification has a new No. 1 in Wichita Northwest, which had an open date in Week Four. The Grizzlies, who had been ranked second, are 2-0 after opening the season on September 12th. Members of the Greater Wichita Athletic League are playing a closed, conference-only schedule this season.

St. Thomas Aquinas moves up one spot to No. 2 after the Saints defeated Raytown (Mo.) 28-14. The Saints earned the win without all-state running back Tank Young. Aquinas hosts 6A No. 5 Shawnee Mission Northwest this week.

Mill Valley, the previous No. 1 and defending state champion, dropped to third after losing its second consecutive game.  After falling 35-28 to Bentonville (Ark.) in Week Three, the Jaguars lost a 28-26 heartbreaker to Gardner-Edgerton. The Mill Valley defense forced five turnovers, but the Jaguars – playing without all-state quarterback Cooper Marsh – couldn’t capitalize.

After a 51-20 win over Dodge City, Bishop Carroll keeps its No. 4 spot. Carroll is scheduled to play at 6A No. 1 Lawrence on Saturday, October 3rd.

Maize remains fifth after crushing Arkansas City 53-8.

Class 4A

Bishop Miege dropped its second consecutive game, but holds on to its No. 1 ranking. The Stags, who have won six straight state titles, fell 41-35 to 5A’s second-ranked Aquinas in Week Three and 49-28 to Missouri powerhouse Rockhurst in Week Four.

The second through fourth spots stay the same. No. 2 Paola crushed Ottawa 62-7. Quarterback Blake Poje returned as No. 3 Tonganoxie bounced back from its previous loss to Paola with a 52-30 win over Eudora. No. 4 McPherson cruised past Winfield 56-13.

St. James Academy stayed at No. 5 after beating Basehor-Linwood 42-35.

Class 3A

The 3A rankings were also unchanged.

No. 1 Andale topped Halstead 42-12. No. 2 Perry-Lecompton shut out Bishop Ward 71-0. Third-ranked Topeka Hayden breezed by Coffeyville 49-0.

Southeast of Saline stayed at No. 4 after earning its third consecutive shutout, a 60-0 win over Russell.

Cheney stayed at No. 5 after topping Hugoton 51-12.

Class 2A

Maur Hill-Mount Academy enters the rankings at No. 5 after improving to 4-0 with a 41-8 win over Republic County. The Ravens used a balanced attack, rushing for 271 yards and passing for 224. Senior running back Andrew Schwinn has already rushed for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns in four games.

Rossville returns to the top spot after a 56-0 win over McLouth. Silver Lake, which was forced to cancel its first two games, improved to 2-0 and maintained its No. 2 ranking with a 96-0 win over Oskaloosa. No. 3 Hoisington topped Phillipsburg 42-21.

Hutchinson Trinity moves up a spot to No. 4 after defeating Lyons 48-0.

Norton, the previous No. 4, dropped out of the rankings after a 30-7 loss to Minneapolis.

Class 1A

The big change is that last week’s No. 2 Valley Heights fell completely out of the rankings following a 28-0 loss to Centralia. Centralia’s victory moved the Panthers up one spot from third to second.

Olpe maintained the top spot after easily beating Uniontown 48-2.

Smith Center moved up a spot to No. 3 after shutting out Sacred Heart 53-0. Meanwhile, Conway Springs moved up one spot to No. 4 following its easy 58-0 win over Ellinwood.

Lyndon entered the rankings at No. 5 after beating Northern Heights 65-16. The Tigers’ only blemish of the season was a 13-7 loss to top-ranked Olpe. The Tigers narrowly edge out Valley Heights and Sedgwick for the final spot in this week’s poll.

Class 8M-I

There are no changes to the 8-Man Division I rankings this week as all of the top-five teams earned victories.

No. 1 Canton-Galva topped Bennington 66-0. Through four games, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 230-6.  Canton-Galva will host No. 5 Little River this week. Little River blanked Lincoln 50-0.

Second-ranked Leoti-Wichita County earned an impressive win at previously-unbeaten Hodgeman County 58-8. No. 3 Madison outscored Udall 70-14.

No. 4 Clifton-Clyde blew past Burlingame 62-12.

Class 8M-II

No. 2 Hanover’s 62-12 victory over last week’s No. 3 Axtell caused a bit of a shakeup in the rankings. Hanover maintains its No. 2 ranking after posting the dominating win over previously undefeated Axtell, which fell to No. 5 in the poll with the loss.

After not playing in Week Three, No. 1 St. Francis crushed Triplains-Brewster 56-6.

Victoria improves two spots to No. 3 with a 54-22 win over Sylvan-Lucas Unified. The Knights barley leap over Lebo in this week’s poll. Lebo beat Hartford 60-14 to maintain its No. 4 ranking.

6-Man Football

Ashland’s 41-32 win over Moscow helped the Blue Jays move from No. 3 in the rankings to No. 2. Moscow, last year’s state champion, dropped one spot to No. 3. Ashland ended the Wildcats’ 13-game winning streak.

Cheylin improved to 3-0 and maintained its top ranking after beating Weskan 74-26. Colton McCarty had another huge game in rushing for 345 yards and eight touchdowns. He also passed for two scores.
