WATCH – 2018 Kansas Shrine Bowl Selection Show
KANSAS - The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors would like to announce the East and West teams for the 2018 Kansas Shrine Bowl. These players have been invited to participate in the 45th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl to be played at Carnie Smith Stadium on the campus of Pittsburg State University on July 28th, 2018 at 7:00 pm.
The 2018 Head Coaches for Kansas Shrine Bowl are Nemaha Central’s Warren Seitz, leading the East Team and Goddard’s Scott Vang, leading the West. Both coaches will bring a unique perspective into this year’s game, as both competed in the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Warren Sietz played for the East in the 1981 game representing Topeka West and Scott Vang played for the West as a graduate of Wichita Northwest. “There are players from every level and they get the chance to shine at the Kansas Shrine Bowl,” said Coach Seitz. “That’s one of the many things that makes this such a special game.”
The Assistant coaches for the East team are; Walt Alexander, Topeka High; Tom Nickelson, Pittsburg; Mark Smith, Frontenac; Garrett Michael, Sabetha and Shawn Seematter, St. Mary’s-Colgan (Pittsburg). “We are very excited about the great group of young men selected for this year’s game,” Said B.J. Harris, Executive Director of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. “These players and coaches now have an incredible opportunity ahead of them, one that is sure to have a lasting impact in their life.”
All Shrine Bowl events are produced and presented to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children [SHC]. SHC is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay. The 45 th Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played Saturday, July 28 th, 2018, in Pittsburg, Kansas, at Carnie Smith Stadium on the campus of Pittsburg State University. Kickoff will be at 7:00 pm. The Kansas Shrine Bowl is an all-star high school senior, East vs. West, football game put on each year in Kansas, by the Kansas Shrine. It is a 501(c) 3 non-profit charity that produces annual events and related activities, with net proceeds benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Kansas Shrine Bowl has sent over $2M to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The game has been played throughout Kansas each July, host cities have included Lawrence, Manhattan, Wichita, Topeka, Hays, Emporia, Pittsburg and for the first time, Dodge City in 2019. The West football team practices at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, Kansas, and the East football team practices at Emporia State University, in Emporia, Kansas. The East Camp Director is Jack Call, current President of the Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors. The West Camp Director is Myron Converse, a past Shrine Bowl All-Star Player in 1982, a Shrine Hall of Famer, and Past President of the Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors.
Beginning in 1974, the flagship event has been the East/West All-Star Football Game. As of 2017, the West leads the series with 27 wins, the EAST has 16 wins, and there has been one tie. Notable alumni include current Green Bay Packers All-Pro Wide Receiver Jordy Nelson, NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, former Kansas State and Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Gary Spani, former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl Champion Linebacker Mark Simoneau and many others.
The Kansas Shrine Bowl also includes the Kansas Masonic All-State Marching band camp, held annually at each host site. The week also includes the Kansa Shrine Bowl Cheer Camp, which culminates with performances at each game.
Other bowl weekend activities include, the Kansas Shrine Bowl Banquet, the state’s largest Shrine Parade, Shriner's Hospitals for Children Free Screening Clinic, 2-Mile Run for Charity/Walk for Love, Junior All-Star Challenge (ages 5–14), High School Football Combine/Clinic and 4-Man Golf Scramble.
